Thanks for sharing Daniel. Very important video. I am not much for buying gold not certified. I seen a comment below about the counterfeits looking brassy. That's a good point. Probably would have snagged me though. That California gold looks N I C E !

That was a very good catch. To date the only counterfeit coin I ever got hung with was a one dollar gold piece. I purchased it before grading services were around. These fakes are a real scourge for our hobby.

There's alot of money in fakes. I bought a few of the most amazing looking Morgan fakes. Semi rare dates AU. They'd go for $60. Luckily I only paid spot for them a number of years back.

Interesting items. Thanks for sharing, it would be great ( and also more informative) to compare side by side with the actual coins they were trying to copy , or at least with a high quality photograph of the obverse and reverse of the actual versions in order to see the detail differences.

I have the exact same year, the '54. I received from my mom. Shes 82. It was given to her as a child from her Grandfather back in the 40's. Apparently he had them for some time, so it's been in the family for easily 100+ years. I brought it in to have it looked at and just like these, its gold but fake. My Great Grandfather always thought they were real. As long as people are out there, there will be counterfeit's. Thanks for the great info!

I have an 1854 type 1 gold dollar and after comparing it to the one in the video, I wouldn't have bought it either. It doesn't look right. Its details and patina are off. As someone else already posted, it looks brassy. US coins are impeccably minted (errors excepted). And this coin appears to have been poorly struck.

If someone could clear up a point for me? Were the counterfeits made to scam modern collectors or were they circulating as counterfeits when the coins were in circulation?

I've had counterfeit British gold sovereign and half sovereign that look a little too perfect and a little bit reddish. The reeding is the dead give away. Too sharp. Good gold and tend to be slightly overweight. So, not hurt when buying for melt prices. There's a story that there were quantities clandestinely ordered by the UK from the middle eastern counterfeit producers because they needed them for inclusion in airman survival kits where the only universally accepted money was gold coins. I don't know if there's anything to the story, but it doesn't sound completely implausible.

Both counterfeit gold coins are great examples that just because they're made of real silver and gold that doesn't mean they're real. What's a few dollars worth of gold or silver when a good counterfeiter can make thousands out of a few dollars worth of gold back then and truth be told even now? Point made is just because it's made of real silver or gold doesn't mean that coin is actually real. I've seen this time and again at my friend's coin shop. People come in , they say hey! This coin is real silver or gold there for it must be real. Sadly this is more common than most would believe. Good educational video Daniel. Congratulations on the California gold coin that straight graded. Yes a coin must be PL on both the obverse and reverse to get that PL attribution. Thanks for sharing.

Must be tough when honest. For the most part, people come in with counterfeits. It's not like they're trying to get you, but didn't realize they had been gotten. Must be hard breaking the news.

It's kind of surprising that the grading companies wouldn't give a PL designation for just the obverse, like the California example, same if the reverse was the only side that looked proof like. It seems that having that designation, even with one side having it would still make the coin more desirable to collect than a coin that doesn't have that appearance. As for the counterfeits, at least they have the gold value in them, they would be good teaching examples considering that they still have some value, it shows the lengths that these fraudsters will go through in order to trick the unsuspecting buyer.
@TheWinstonDouble4 ай бұрын
It's really goofy. They do the same thing with cameo designations on 50s and 60s proof sets. You have to have the same cameo on both sides. I as the consumer don't give a hoot about that. I only care about cameo obverse. It would not be hard to put a dual designation for each side.

I consider my self a us coin expert (what i don't know i can find in books or online) i will always avoid gold. I won't certify or buy its just to tricky and hard to tell without sending it in like that. Fakes alot of time test out as real gold.
