Upon first glance, solid couplers may seem like a great idea, but they are the work of the devil, created for the sole purpose of destroying your pedals!
This video explains why you should never, ever use these.

@scottbecker3485
@scottbecker3485 3 жыл бұрын
Totally valuable! An additional point against such couplers: When your pedals are firmly attached to your pedalboard using Velcro, whenever you want to remove a pedal, your need to apply leverage of some kind to its base, and that means you are torquing the jacks on it as well as on any neighboring pedals.

Why? That's not their only use. They were around for years before being used between pedals. They're M-to-M 1/4" telephone line adapters. I use 3 of them daily with 3 cables I have that, have female ends on them to convert them to male ends. Then I can use those cables like a normal instrument cable.

100% correct. I've seen more damaged pedals in my shop caused by rigid couplers than by any other source of abuse. I can spot where a rigid coupler was used by whether the 1/4" phone jack is normal dirty-noisy or VERY noisy.

The logical endpoint of this line of thinking would be to remove the housings from all your pedals, stack the circuit boards on top of each other, solder them together, and then put the whole towering monstrosity inside a new, custom-built housing the size of a laundry hamper. And _then_ you attach one giant button to the top that just says "Gain".

I just built my first ever pedalboard and when it came to the couplers, I saw those evil pieces of garbage in the guitar shop and I thought "wow genius idea !" so I bought them without the shadow of doubt. Absolutely, and 85-90 percent of pedals I've had to work on have (dirty or) sprung (wired) input/output jacks. Some PCB mounted jacks even develope cracked solder joints. The "rest" may actually have other problems. Use patch cables and occasionally check to be sure the pedal's jack's nuts are tight.

Holy Shit Colin. I've been watching your videos since before you were huge on KZbin (about 6 or 7 years, however long) and I've always continued to get more impressed. Keep up the good work, I'd like to chat sometime!

Another tip...if you put your pedals too close together and something goes wrong with a pedal or cable, it’s a PITA to diagnose the problem and find the offending pedal/cable. Keep them separated enough that you can easily remove a cable and bypass a pedal/cable easily if needed. I found this out the hard way while setting up for a 1 hour festival slot. After finding the bad cable, we only had 20 mins left to actually play.

Why is the Scottish accent so well suited to these "HELLFIRE AND DAMNATION UNTO ALL YE SINNERS!!" kind of things? If I said it I'd sound ridiculous! My Glaswegian Great-Grandmother is laughing at me from beyond the grave....

I regret ever buying and using these. I tried to disconnect a pedal once, but they were all glued down to the pedal board with velcro. Tore the whole goddamn setup to pieces 😦

Thank you so much! I bought a few of these and was using one between a NUX high gain and an Electro-harmonix Hot Tubes Overdrive, since their input jacks are almost alined. I put an end to that! Thanks Mate from San Antonio Texas!
