Upon first glance, solid couplers may seem like a great idea, but they are the work of the devil, created for the sole purpose of destroying your pedals!
This video explains why you should never, ever use these.

Totally valuable! An additional point against such couplers: When your pedals are firmly attached to your pedalboard using Velcro, whenever you want to remove a pedal, your need to apply leverage of some kind to its base, and that means you are torquing the jacks on it as well as on any neighboring pedals.

Why? That's not their only use. They were around for years before being used between pedals. They're M-to-M 1/4" telephone line adapters. I use 3 of them daily with 3 cables I have that, have female ends on them to convert them to male ends. Then I can use those cables like a normal instrument cable.

100% correct. I've seen more damaged pedals in my shop caused by rigid couplers than by any other source of abuse. I can spot where a rigid coupler was used by whether the 1/4" phone jack is normal dirty-noisy or VERY noisy.

Glad someone addressed this!!! I’m so sick of seeing these things used...worst case is when it’s on a pedalboard thst has Velcro holding the pedals down and it sinks down a couple millimeters...I can hear the jacks screaming in agony...
@cinnamonnoir2487

The logical endpoint of this line of thinking would be to remove the housings from all your pedals, stack the circuit boards on top of each other, solder them together, and then put the whole towering monstrosity inside a new, custom-built housing the size of a laundry hamper. And _then_ you attach one giant button to the top that just says "Gain".

Thanks a lot Colin. Your video is so accurate. I just built my first ever pedalboard and when it came to the couplers, I saw those evil pieces of garbage in the guitar shop and I thought "wow genius idea !" so I bought them without the shadow of doubt. What a fool I was. Once at the rehearsal I instantly noticed the wrong alignment between my pedals and the day after I found this video in my KZbin suggestions. I am now on my way to buy flexible couplers. I will share these words of wisdom with the friends !

Agreed on all points. One additional point you didn't mention: When you've got your pedals attached to your pedalboard via velcro, you've got to peel up a whole strip of them together to replace one, and it puts tremendous stress on the adjacent pedals as you're doing so.

Thanks for the advice. I stumbled across this video while looking for patch cables. ALL of my pedals were connected with these couplers, using the Z-shaped ones where the sockets didn't align. You make a watertight argument for not using them, so I've now got decent patch cables and replaced all the couplers. It actually made very little difference to the footprint of my pedals on the board.
@denniswalsh8476
@denniswalsh8476 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, and 85-90 percent of pedals I've had to work on have (dirty or) sprung (wired) input/output jacks. Some PCB mounted jacks even develope cracked solder joints. The "rest" may actually have other problems. Use patch cables and occasionally check to be sure the pedal's jack's nuts are tight.

Why is the Scottish accent so well suited to these "HELLFIRE AND DAMNATION UNTO ALL YE SINNERS!!" kind of things? If I said it I'd sound ridiculous! My Glaswegian Great-Grandmother is laughing at me from beyond the grave....

That's controlled evil that makes you money. Not the kind that breaks the stuff you make money with. Basically giving in to wrath will be worse than giving in to greed. On that note don't give in to pride the world doesn't need another Fred durst

Just imagine having a pedal on the board with velcro and one or two of these plugs on one or both sides, trying to pull it off will just wreck the jacks completely...

I experienced that while filming for this video. I'm using strong Velcro and had to remove 3 pedals at the same time, being sure to apply equal force to each so that I wasn't breaking them. It was very stressful. Would not recommend.

NEVER even thought of any of this, other than obviously the jacks being in different places. AND i already knew hammond style box sides were not exactly perpendicular from building vape mods. i didn't really want to use them, at the moment i don't even have a board, or even a bunch of pedals. just 2 vox stomplabs, bass and guitar. i do sometimes hook them together, and really need minimum 1 foot patch cable and all i have are 6", so have to cock them sideways a bit to be close enough. i've had a 1 foot in my cart for a while, just haven't gotten around to it. so, at the moment i wouldn't even be able to use them at all. but one day i might've been tempted, and now i see the light my brother, halelujah! seriously though, this channel is definitely one of my favs. absolute favorite guitar tech channel, by far... just keep finding old videos to make me less ignorant with guitars, love it.
