Medicine has limited options for restoring lost hearing, but recently, inventors in Japan and the U.S. have been trying a new approach: vibrating devices that allow users to "hear" through their skin.

How does it make any sense the dark skinned guy likes music if he cant hear or hear almost nothing?.
@kutlwanolekaowa6110
@kutlwanolekaowa6110 2 жыл бұрын
I think the guy you're talking about gets vibrotactile feedback when he has the wristband on. So, instead of hearing the sound he can actually feel it. Rewatch the video from 4:40 where the CEO of Neosensory explains how the wristband is tonotopically arranged from low to high frequencies similar to how the cochlear works. Assuming that the guy (Phillip) has a severe-to-profound hearing loss then my best bet is that he can literally feel the sound/vibrations on his wrist when he's playing music and that is how he gets to enjoy music. I think in the beginning he had to learn to associate certain "vibrations" with certain sounds e.g. sound vibrations of a baby crying are different from when someone is speaking, hence he could sign "baby" when they played the sound of a baby crying. They also mentioned sensory substitution for the Deaf in the video

@@johndor7793 It's definitely different than the way we hearing people perceive music. However, sound is frequency interpreted through our ears. Through the skin, they are perceiving those frequencies too, just on a a different medium so to speak. It's still possible to love the rhythm and be inspired by it.

it wud be interesting to add another device and test for directional sound processing. I can see an application for military and civilian security using the map of vibrations to monitor motion detection around a building and instantly know where it is coming from and other factors. also for use in home security to monitor a home for trespass while sleeping and where the trespass was detected. I can see this as an alternate way of receiving audio data for hearing people. to be able to have multiple streams of audio data and tune in to what you want to listen to, merely by focusing your brain on the selected vibration. I can see stock traders using this to monitor a particular 1 or more stocks that they are following for prices. I would like to see the test results of it being used by stock traders. And could it effectively be used in place of a speaker on a phone to conduct a conversation? And what is currently the maximum number of words it has been able to decipher and what is the maximum speed of words coming in can it decipher so far?

Decades ago i read about a belt that kept you aware of the direction of north, to make navigation and self-location easier. Something like these products might make it possible for blind people to navigate in open environments more easily. Yay for all of this!

When he said "Adding new senses to what we perceive reality is", I wonder if that's the same feeling as to people who has synesthesia says that they can taste color or see music or even smell textures. I personally would want to experience the feeling of feeling the vibrations from the colors of the rainbow for example. How depressive purple can be, how angry red is, how relaxed yellow feels like, how scared black feels etc.

My first thought is what people with synasthesisea would make of it. This obviously comes in different forms and there would be ne single answer. But I'm confident it would register in tastes and smells aplenty. As for me, I'm harking back to the Bionic Man and scenes from Daredevil where a visual representation formd from ...acoustic stimuli. Moreover, music would never be quite the same again too, for I'd be experiencing on would allude to a physical, almost visceral basis.
