I believe most Europeans have the same/similar opinion about America and Americans, but it’s not that we don’t like you, it’s the common arrogance, ignorance, and unfounded need for superiority most people experience (myself included) that set us off, which is unfortunate. With that being said it is EXTREMELY refreshing to finally see someone open-minded and down to earth, and I do not doubt that people will be gravitating toward you since most Europeans are curious to know more about your culture. To outside observers, US daily news appears entirely dominated by politics. In Europe, from the UK to Greece, criminal trials cannot be covered in media between the day someone is committed (arraigned) and the end of the trial. Elected politicians cannot get involved in the judicial process, or they'd lose their jobs. It seems there is no independence in the US judiciary, but everything is politics.

Sub judice rules are very strict in both British judicial systems, in order to protect the integrity of the courts' proceedings. Never once in my 70+ yrs have I seen a government minister or an officer of Parliament discuss the merits of a criminal case before trial, except when they were a witness, the victim, or the accused, or a member of their families.

Hello Joel. I toured US for three months and loved it. I went to Netherlands for work and found them very direct, but as a blunt Yorkshireman myself I cannot really say that was anything new. If anything, having gone to Netherlands for work, I would have said they are equally as open to the charge of over confidence in their own ways being best.

The thing with cheerleading, is that looking hot is part of the sport. It's a beauty pageant with acrobatics, and don't get me wrong those are difficult tandem acrobatics, but it is so painfully obvious that one of it's primary goals is to be eye candy. To be frank though, I find the whole concept of pep rallies and cheerleading utterly weird, but that's just my opinion. It's just kinda wild thst you invented a whole sport because of the frequent breaks in almost all American sports, especially American Football.

I agree that other countries know more about our country and how it is works than we do. When I travel overseas for my job, I hear how we judge others, we aren't tolerant of anyone who is different, and we think we are better than other countries. They also say, we come to their country and complain how their country doesn't measure up to the US, we are arrogant, we try to make them speak English in their country, and we feel we should not have to respect their country laws and rules, just because we are Americans. This is sad how unaware we are how the rest of the world sees us or if we are aware, we don't care.

In soccer competitions things indeed can get rough, that's why they seperate the fans of the teams. This doesn't happen in the other sports though. And hooliganism has nothing to do with sports. These are kind of fight clubs who affiliate with a soccer club but are just into fighting. They often don't even watch the game but provoke the other fight club (or the police ;-)). When we talk about America, a lot comes down to the political aspects in supreme court. How Roe vs Wade became undone and creates so much misery! The USA are becoming a very harsh environment for women. We truly do not understand why the justice system is influenced by politics on such a large scale. And why the "land of the free" chooses to subject itself to religion so much.

I think this platform has contributed hugely to that development, as it's a lot easier now to share experiences and opinions. I think the next challenge will be to separate the BS from the useful. My advice would be if your in the Netherlands, dont just go to Amsterdam, go outside the tourist places. Go to Breda, Nijmegen, Arnhem, zwolle and so. There are so many more beautiful places and not so expensive as the tourist places everyone goes to. Enjoy your stay.

the people interviewed here live in a mostly heterogeneous society compared to the states, if they had the large diversity as america does especially in the cities, then they would be just as divided if not moreso, the problem I suppose with america is that its at the forefront of alot of things, specifically because of the wide mix of ethnicities and thoughts, it is dealing with these types of clashes and challenges within the population first before other countries around the world would inevitably have to deal with them, once their population becomes less heterogenous through mass immigration - everyone praises japan, and south korea and even the dutch as seen here, imagine if they had the differences in population makeup and background we had, they for sure would not be having it as easy as they are now where everyone in their society just goes along with the mass opinion on everything

I met Americans who were down to earth, awesome and very nice people. Americans have always been divided, when I the media say, oh they are so divided, it reminds me either they haven't got a clue or they are pushing a narrative. The Dutch have some divisions. The farmers just waged a major protest against snobbish politicians who want to hamper how farmers provide food. France just had major protests against the government, or have we already forgotten. Spanish society is so divided they have at several separatist movements beyond the Catalans. In the 1930s French society was so divided that there was a phrase "Better Hitler than Blum." Leon Blum was a very nice, solid, incorruptible socialist politician who was Prime Minister for a while. (Those people ate their words.) And I love these European countries who only 80 years ago couldn't wait to see Americans and British + Canadians. And until 1991 they were afraid that Americans would close the bases and go home. Before you judge people, you had better see for yourselves. Some of them talked about racism! Until the recent increase of migrants the only European countries that were remotely diverse (meaning non European countries) were the United Kingdom and to a lesser extent France. America has always been diverse and because human beings tend to like to be with like, it has caused problems. But these countries are no where near as diverse as the USA. I just looked up some stats. The Netherlands have a population of around 17.7 million people. In the United States our Asian-American population is just over 24 million people. There are more people of Scottish descent in the USA than in Scotland. I know the United States has some major problems, but these folks are judging us based upon news reports and incomplete data. Most countries used to have the ability to purchase guns, until more ivory tower politicians decided ordinary folks shouldn't be allowed to have personal protection while politicians are allowed. And I guarantee you that everything these folks have heard about Trump is based upon half truths and half sentences. I know he is not a politician, but that is part of his strange appeal to people who are sick to the back teeth of politicians. He has several times in his career been honored for his help to minority communities, including by Corretta Scott King, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton (but that was when he was a democrat). He was close friends with Oprah Winfrey for decades. Hilary Clinton said he should run for president, I've seen the interview. But then he became a republican candidate -gasp European leaders don't like him because he called them all out on their lack of commitment to the NATO Alliance, which in the past few years has suddenly become so popular among the EU nations that thought they could have an EU army and send the Yanks home. Only the UK, the other most hated nation in Europe, meets its obligations...barely.

The main reason why many Europeans have such a strong opinion on the USA, is that the American culture is not alien to us, we all watch US movies and series and even news stations because many here speak English as a second language and because US politics matter to us as well since they are currently the only remaining superpower. While on the flip side, many Americans are totally oblivious about the rest of the world, not just because they are ignorant or don't care, but just because their country is huge compared to European countries and the concept of speaking another language is not as common as it is here. There's enough Americans who never left their own state, let alone the country. Over here in Europe going to another country with a different language, different culture and different politics, is seldom more than just a few hours drive, or even hop on a train. As for the political situation in the US with the conservative and liberals hating each other: that's what you get for having a 2-party system that's so cemented, that new parties with fresh new ideas don't stand a chance. To be honest, you can't even really call that democracy when all you get to choose from is your personal lesser of two evils. Just my 2 cents, from a Dutch living in Germany

As a dutchman i really do not understand America anymore. I've been there a couple of times albeit some decades ago. But the devision is played out by everything, Media, multi media, schools and churches. Of 400 milion Americas are Trump and Biden really the only options? You can either choose bad or worse, and nuances are off the table. Either you are a liberal woke communist or you are racist christian extremist. Holland is definitely not perfect, but having multiple parties to choose from, ending in coalitian forming is a better form of democracy.

Thanks, this was very interesting! I've been to the US on holidays four times, and twice on business. And I've been all over western Europe, as well as Australia and several countries in Asia. I've lived in northern Europe for over 50 years. In Europe we see the US as "bigger is better", "mine's better than yours" etc, we have the image which Americans have given us. I'm a Formula One fan, have been all my life, and the US is going to turn it into entertainment, instead of a sport. There are so many YT uploads about "What Americans think about ......". Who cares? So much so that I feel like for too many people and politicians consistently put party before country. Hypocrites. Many people may have strong opinions about the US, while at the same time american fashion, music, movies and TV series are more popular than anything else. A lot of trends that we follow originated in the US, like christmass, Halloween, Black Friday, 420. People sometimes forget how heavily our way of life is influenced by all kinds of things from the US. Despite some cultural differences we're still a western society with western vallues. And when it comes to politics, our society is also heavily devided at the moment. Where you have Trump... we got Wilders (Netherlands). Which is kinda like the same in some sense. So people here may have strong opinions about the US, but we do not do much better ourselves at the moment. ;)
