When humans first travelled to the remote islands of the South Pacific, the mourning gecko managed to stowaway with them, and thanks to an amazing adaptation that single lizard could populate a whole new island.

Taken from South Pacific (2009).
Unimaginably vast, the Pacific Ocean is 99% water and only 1% land - you could fit the whole of the world's landmasses into it and still have enough room for another Africa! This landmark documentary series explores the sheer scale and majesty of the largest ocean on Earth, the isolation of its islands, the extraordinary journeys wildlife and humans have gone through to reach these specks of land, and what happened to both after their arrival.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

The title is actually a little inaccurate - as these geckos are a mutation of a species that does require a mate, they won't lay eggs until they think they have mated. So the females will "mate" with each other, stimulating the need to produce eggs! People nickname them the lesbian lizards because of this.

Some bee species are also all female, as well as some others. Also intruiging how no “male only” species have been found (at least yet) this could mean females are the deafult in a sense, exculding hermaphrodites and such.

I did know that geckoes can walk on walls with their sticky hands and that they eat their own skin after they shed it but I had no idea that they actually lay their eggs that hatch into geckos without sperm cells from males. I am learning something new every day.

these geckos are also male and female but females have developed parthogenesis like other rare species, which is this ability to reproduce without a male... they create genetically identical offspring. it happens when no males are around/when the species is under pressure/danger, etc. to ensure the continuity of the species. it's bloody miraculous. still male/female and that is all there is.

😅😅😅😅😅😅 chickens lay eggs without mating, tortoises lay eggs without mating, snake do it. Yet none of them are fertilized. You need to have a species thar can carry and store sperm for the length of their life. Example, Female Bees with mate woth a male once and only once yet will have the ability to store sperm and lay fertilized eggs days, months and years later. So they might lay eggs but they arent viable. Unless these lizards can Go through metamorphosis and change its sex like some trigger fish can do or frogs do when there is to many of one sex around. 😅
