Their fighting skills are something to marvel at. That slow-motion worthy flip at 2:43 seemed to be a way for the fly to avoid falling down, and at 2:46 you can see one of the flies using its wings to flip over, while the other one attempts to counteract. It's really interesting!

As a hypothesis, maybe the fight vs flirt is based on perceiving the other fly as a potential mate or a potential competitor? Which makes me wonder too much about fly sex characteristics, or even fly sexuality. I'm also wondering what flirting/dating would be like in a world where everyone is bisexual. Because then every 'friend' is a potential mate, I'd imagine a lot more jealousy-inspired fights would break out.
