As a Dutch film student, I feel like Dutch cinema really thrives in it's visuals and in it's sound. Most technical aspects in bigger Dutch films are well or great, but when it comes to story and acting, We don't have too much to offer yet. Every once in a while a film comes out which does these aspects well but the vast majority, which only gets bigger as the budgets get bigger, really lack in these departments which is sad to see. There are people like the comedic duo Rundfunk, who've made one tv show and one film now, who really experiment in all aspects and a lot of it is done very well. They make these almost surreal stories with strange stories and intentional over the top acting that, while not always great, can be really refreshning to see. They even take a more experimental approach to the visuals in their film, where they've given it all a very warm feeling and they use these fisheye lenses for extra comedic effect in close ups which just works so well and while they certainly have their flaws, they're much more exciting than any other Dutch filmmaker to me because they try stuff out and they really have their own voice instead of a studio's voice.

I'm suprised i havent seen "Amsterdammed" in the comments yet. Its from the 80s so not the best special effects but a good thriller/horror. The plot revolves around a serial killer who uses the famed canals of the Dutch capital to murder random people, one of which involves a detective's girlfriend linked to the murders. Especially the opening scene is pretty well done.

I really like that you decided to dabble into Flemish culture and dialect. I always love to see videos with people's first impression on the differences between Dutch and Flemish. One film I heavily recommend is 'Bontekoe' which is about a boy joining a crew from the Dutch East India Company. If you want to see another Flemish film, I heavily recommend 'Daens' which is about the early days of Belgium's existence and how life was during the industrial revolution. Almost everyone knows the film and there are a couple scenes that are used as visual aid by history teachers.

There are a few dutch movies that I missed in your list. The Oscar winning ones for example. From the top of my head there were seven or eight? 'Glas' 'Karakter', 'Deze kleine wereld'. 'Anna en Bella', 'De Aanslag'. 'Antonia' and 'Father and Daughter'. But there is also 'The Red Turtle'. Technically a Japanese production but totally made by the dutch animator Michaël Dudok de Wit. And the latest hit in dutch cinema: 'De beentjes van sint-hildegard'. A bit challenging because it is in dialect so even many dutch speakers will need subtitles.

@@caseykilmore Officially the dialect is Twents, a Dutch Low Saxon dialect. But even more correctly it's Almeloos. The main character is played by Herman Finkers. He made Almelo famous with the rhyme: "Het ene stoplicht springt op rood, Het andere op groen, In Almelo is altijd wat te doen." I highly recommend you watch some his shows. Hilarious. As an introduction you may want to view his "oudejaarsconference". You'll love it... if you have not seen it yet. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iF6Uf6ZmnpJsqNE

@@caseykilmore "Een maand later" (1987). It's a movie about 2 women with completely different lives changing roles for a month. It was made ages before the 'Wife swap' series became famous and I have a strong suspicion this movie was the inspiration for the TV-series featuring in the early 2000's in almost every country.

As a Dutch guy I never appreciated Dutch cinema a lot until I fell by accident in the TV business and through that in film. Because of that I became extremely appreciative. An American production or even a commercial here have so much more money to spend per minute than Dutch cinema and its rather creative how they manage to do all that with such small crews and budgets.

What do you think about: Brimstone by Martin Koolhoven, Planet Beauty by Emma Westenberg, Prins from Sam de Jong, Vast from Rolf van Eijk, Basic Instinct and Total Recall also from Paul Verhoeven (English spoken ofc.) Alex van Warmerdam also made De Noordelingen / The Northerners There is also 'Amsterdamned', by Dick Maas (not extremely amazing). He also made De Lift in 1983. ( The English langue is seen as quite important in dutch schools. Probably also because of historical connections, but it's also useful (for business etc.) to know an highly used langue when your langue is not spoken/used that much. ) But you might already know all these titles. Anyways, have a wonderful day and a healthy and amazing 2021.

I really enjoyed this video!! I am a film buff myself so I love to watch these types of videos. I saw someone mention it in the comments already, but check out "The Vanishing". It is a Dutch movie from 1988. I didn't know about the film until I saw a list of Stanley Kubrick's favorite films and all of a sudden I saw the title "Spoorloos" which is the Dutch title of "The Vanishing". I was like what the heck! haha. Then I watched it and now it is one of my favorite Dutch films. It was actually send in for best foreign language film at The Oscars, but was turned downby the academy because the film contained too much French dialogue :( Stanley Kubrick apparently said he found it to be one of the scariest films he had seen. He liked it so much that he cast Dutch actress Johanna Ter Steege (he allegedly also considered Julia Roberts and Uma Thurman) who played one of the lead roles in Spoorloos to play in his film "Aryan Papers". Eventually the production of "Aryan Papers" was ceased because allegedly Kubrick thought it would suffer commercially after the success of Steven Spielberg's "Schindler's List". Sorry for this long story haha, I just really like films. It would be awesome if you made a video about your favorite movies :)

I'd recommend 'De Kuthoer', translated to 'The Columnist' for the international market. I guess translating it literally would be too offensive? I think it recently came out in Australia? Not the best Dutch film out there but a funny absurd social commentary on social media. And as others already mentioned... Spoorloos, based on Tim Krabbé's novel 'Het Gouden Ei'.

I am so grateful the Dutch system uses subtitles over the German dubbing. Not just because, as you point out, it's where I learned most of my English; but dubbing is so immersion breaking, its almost comical. When you next watch ET try saying 'E.T. telephoniere nach house' in the time it takes the puppet to say 'ET phone home' and you'll know what I mean. I'm not a generally a fan of the genre, but Amsterdamned Is a slasher masterclass. And if you wanna see the Dutch do Dickens, try Ciske de Rat

While not actually a Dutch movie per se, I feel 'A bridge too far' deserves a recommendation. Being mostly shot on actual location, it's about as accurate as a WW2 movie gets. And it depicts events that considered pivotal moments in recent Dutch history. and WW2 movies/docs/literature from a Dutch perspective in general, because so many of our idiosyncrasies can be traced back to those 5 years our country wasn't our own. Considering the timespan in our history, we spend an inordinate amount teaching it to our children. And we are almost religious in remembering. It's why everyone speaks English, because that certainly wasn't the case back then (Off course we also all speak German, but hey, no shame in hedging your bets). Hell, we chucked people out of planes for 60 years to honour a group of strangers that fell out of the sky one day bringing hope, only to die in route to aforementioned bridge. Understanding wat Bezet Nederland was, goes a long way to understanding the Dutch.
