What pleasantly surprised me when I was in the Netherlands is that there's little hierarchy at work. I was walking in the hallway and some older colleague was smiling at me and saying hello. I also saw a cleaning lady who was cleaning our offices and she seemed very happy and smiling. You don't always see it here in my country. I think if people treat each other as human beings that makes them happy.

I find it fascinating that few people seem to give much conscious thought to the impact of their physical surroundings on their wellbeing and happiness. And by that, I mean the built environment... urban planning... walkable citites, excellent public transport, objective sustainability and safety... with lots of nature mixed in (as one woman said) and never more than a few minutes walk or bike ride to a park or wide open green countryside. The book "Curbing Traffic: the human case for fewer cars in our lives" by Melissa and Chris Bruntlett articulates this very clearly.

@@mradventurer8104 Yes, those things are all great - in addition to what I commented on. I'm talking about the kind of urban planning that enables a person to get to every place they need to go, with no more than a 15 minute walk or bike ride, and for the longer journeys, a dense network of public transport options with stations and stops, again, within easy walking or cycling distance. Failure to plan for, build and maintain this kind of infrastructure is a big reason why people in other countries are unhappy -- because the burden falls on those people to try and make up for the lack, which puts all the costs (time, money, energy) on ordinary people. Years of dealing with that grinds people down. It destroys confidence, optimism and hope. Many Dutch people seem to take what they have -- what much of the world does not have -- for granted. (And of course well-maintained buildings and access to parks is wonderful - but those do exist in other places so they do not explain the high happiness ratings.)

Heel mooi onderwerp.

I completely agree with You.. You can make thousands clips like this but reality is just different.. Living in Utrecht for 8months you can see people who are running like a rats in rat race and then partying to forget about this week life.. Everything seems to be a "pink glasses" version of reality, but when you will go deeply into the conversations with locals sometimes part of them are under SSRI drugs etc to cope with the struggles "discretely on their own". For me such a smiles to the public are just a mask while inside are many hard broken people. Instead of "pretending" always happy and smile maybe it would be better to be truth

I regret the fact that my great grandparents left the Netherlands to come to the U.S. In my opinion the Netherlands is superior in every way to the U.S., except for the weather. Life in America is very precarious, constant culture war, intolerant and ignorant population, poor social net, too much emphasis on making money and not enough emphasis on contributing to the common good, declining educational standards, nasty religion (evangelicals), ugly cities and suburbs, stupid culture. You have a prosperous country, but don't forget that all prosperity came to your contry since your country accepted the Protestant faith. Now, most of you take that for granted, not knowing what it takes to maintain your freedom; and for that reason some of your notorious politicians will bring the country back again into the Dark Ages, and they have already begun: Netherlands just shut down 3000 farms last year, at a time when food prices were raised up. Things are getting gloomy in the world, so, it would be wise to become intelligent in the science of salvation while there is prosperity and formal happiness. When freedom goes away, that practical knowledge is trickier to procure it.
