Never been to Germany but the best holiday i ever had was at a German filled hotel in Spain. We were the only Brits. We learned a lot about how to get drunk and have fun while staying in control. There were so many group activities, events for the children, i felt like part of a big family. At night we'd sit on the balcony listening to happy Germans laughing and drinking sangria around a big table by the pool. There was freedom in organisation, it was the best holiday i ever had and i still think about it to this day.

If I remember correctly, when the Germany version of Monopoly was introduced, you could vote for your town / city and there was a massive campaign in Saarland to get it on the board. So much so, that Saarbrücken got the top spot.

You climb up a ladder and slide down a snake in Snakes and Ladders. In the US, it’s Chutes and Ladders. The British version of Monopoly uses London street names, but the original version was licensed by a company not based in London so there are some strange choices for the streets used. Instead of Ludo, the US has Parcheesi. All from the Indian Parchisi

We play board games starting kindergarten. By the times we're adult we read 40 page manuals for games that take 3 hours to play and at least an hour to explain 😂. Not to forget the arguing about the rules and scouring internet forums for answers by the author of the game. You two need to go to the Spiel board game fair in Essen next year. It's loads of fun.

Standard Monopoly: Buy a street, build a house... German Monopoly: Anschluss! No I am joking 😀but I couldn't resist. Because we have twoo beautiful games - the original Monopoly, called Business, maybe from 1920-1930. All the board with old Prague, names of streets and squares that will never come back. And second one, board game Riesengebirge, all in german, written in fractura and with tin "tourist" dolls. My grandma allways played with one, which she called "Hébrdlová" (no idea why 😋). That game was popular souvenir from Krkonoše (Riesengebirge) most populated by Germans.

About the number of languages spoken my guess was London too. There are several reasons to assume that it's London: it's not only the capital of the UK with many embassies but also the economic and financial center of the UK. Also it's the location of several British Commonwealth institutions. Its universities and academies. Immigration from former colonies of which the UK had far more than Germany.

I love Skat! The rules take a bit of explaining, but as soon as you know them it's really cool. It's a great balance between luck and strategy, so you can easily win games as beginner with good cards (which you will get eventually except if you are really unlucky, but normally you're bound to get some rounds. And even if you don't, you still get to play and strategise as the opponent, even if you don't get points, so it's still fun.), but there's also a lot of strategies and psychologically factors (learning your opponent's strategies, determining the cards of your opponent and your team player from way they play cards) you can master, which makes it way more interesting than games mostly or purely based on luck.

You guys should have played the games in the podcast, similar to Rocketbeans. Carcassonne would be amazing, something unique and decidedly German, unlike most other games that are well known everywhere or have similar editions. Or Schwarzer Peter, which would be fun from a language pov, because the animal names are kinda made up and ridiculous, ie Gans und Gänserich, Ente und Enterich(which should be Erpel...)

First time i watched this podcast, cause NOW you're in my wheelhouse! First off, on the topic of "playing it wrong" you raised for Mensch Ärgere Dich Nicht, you most probably play Monopoly wrong too. The most common mistakes people make are 1. There is NO money EVER going to free parking or into the middle and then collected by getting on free parking. This is rule is not in the rulebook, its a hearsay rule we all inherited from our parents for some reason and is the biggest contributor to extremely long playtimes. 2. When someone lands on a property and declines to buy it, the property is immediately auctioned off to the highest bidder, including the person landing there. You can get properties much cheaper that way. 3. Materials are capped on purpose. You need 4 houses on a place to buy a hotel. You can't skip this. Never buy hotels, buy only houses to starve your competition of materials. Kind of like getting a.... monopoly on houses ;) Games you might want to try that are pretty fun and easy to get into: Cardgames: Bohnanza (Simple trading with bean cards), Skull King (Trick taking game with pirate theme) and Hanabi (Cooperative game with limited information where you hold your hand of cards _away_ from you). Boardgames: Dixit (Guess cards on clues from other players and try to confuse with your own contributions), Concept (Guess what your team is trying to tell you through simple pictograms on a board), Unlock Series (Escape games with app support) and Pandemic (Try to save the world from deadly viruses as a team) There are thousands of new board games being released every year. The biggest board game convention in the world is held in germany yearly, the Essen SPIEL. If you ever come around Lüneburg on a Tuesday, we might be holding a free open boardgame night you could join. Websearch for boardgame palooza, see you there ;) (Could go on and on on this topic..., love boardgames so much.)

Anyway, it's hard to believe most of these are not even from this millenium .. especially coming from someone who comes from post (and yet somehow -still ) communist Slovakia :D Also, the mortal sin of not mentioning the game with absolutely perfect name for a couple like you - Ganz schon Clever - is strong with this video :) but had a good time listening to you anyway. So please, do your-self a favor and get these two - - 1. Ganz Schon Clever .... and Sea Salt and Paper :) they are small and cheap ... modern and fun , not taking too long to play.
