This song came out in 1959 and it was a top 10 hit. With their hair, the high quiff-pompadour greased-up style or slicked-back style was a lot of pomade to get that look. This is my Dad's favorite music so we grew up with it in the house. I never really appreciated it at the time but I do now.

The Coasters had quite a few hits in the 50s and 60s; another one of their popular tunes was 'Yakety Yak.' Another group you might look into is the Orlons; two of their hits were 'Don't Hang Up' and 'Meet Me On South Street.'

These guys had a lot of hits during the 1950's that were so popular their songs appear in movies throughout the years. Besides their Hugh hit "Charlie Brown (1959). They also top the charts with these other hits you should react to. "Poison Ivy (1953), "Yakety Yak" (1958), "Life could be a Dream", "Along Came Jones", "Little Egypt", "Love Potion Number 9", "Smokey Joes Cafe", "Searchin", "Down in Mexico" (1956). Note: Mel, the hair style of the slick down hair by Black American Men during the 40's and 50's was called "A Marcel." Great reaction as always.

The Charlie Brown of the Coasters has nothing to do with the Charlie Brown comic by Charles Schultz. They just share a common name. The dance is called "The Charleston" and was most popular during the 1920s.

I saw the Coasters back in the early 60's. My favorites by them were "Searchin'", "Yakety Yak", and "Poison Ivy". The type of style you see here of straightening your hair used by black men from the 20's to the 60's was called "conk" or "conking" because people used a cream called "Congolene". The announcer you see here is Dick Clarke and it's from the old American Bandstand. Dick later went on to produce "New Years Rockin' Eve" which we still see every New Years Eve. Dick was also a good friend of the great Jackie Wilson, whose "To Be Loved", the live version from The Ed Sullivan show I've recommended a couple of times to you. When Jackie had a heart attack on stage and was in a coma for 8 years Dick helped defray some of hospital costs, as did Elvis Presley.

Coasters are a brilliant band. It was1959 slicked backed hair which was always styled as DA and quiff in the uk, but also termed as bouffant. Normally we'd use tough grease pomade like Black & white or Dax. Blue magic was another but not as tough, but more hold than brylcreem. Rock 'n' Roll forever!

Another Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller hit song. Two young Jewish men wrote many of the smash hits by the black artists during the 50s and early 60s. They also wrote many hits for Elvis, and other artists. So much so, that 50 years later they could do a complete Broadway play featuring nothing but their songs -- Smoky's Joe Cafe. Incredibly gifted song writers who were responsible for much of the soundtrack of the Boomer's radio listening.
