Yakety-yak. Something like how “Blah-blah-blah” is used. Listen to the song in The Music Man called "Pick-a-Little, Talk-a-Little". They end up like chickens, clucking around. Very funny. - BG

The Coasters songs were written by Jerry Lieber & Mike Stoller. Two Jewish boys from Los Angeles who wrote the best Black rock n roll ever! The doo-wop groups of that era were usually 4 or 5 guys. The lead was the tenor and the singer with the deep voice was the bass singer. They honed their craft on the street corners of Detroit or Chicago.

"You Look Marvelous" - *Billy Crystal* (pay close attention to the celebrities in the video) "Rapping Rodney" - *Rodney Dangerfield* "Big Cockroach" - *Kip Adotta* "Wet Dream" - *Kip Adotta* (it's not a dirty song) "The Streak" - *Ray Stevens* "King Tut" - *Steve Martin* *Edited to add* (someone reminded me of Weird Al, though I sent a list of his songs a while back) - "Trapped In the Drive-thru" - *Weird Al* (it's pretty long, but also funny, at least to me)

My parents were '50s kids (my Dad a greaser), and they raised me on this stuff (and classic country which my dad was also into) as a young child. I very much appreciate that my introduction to rock and roll and its influences and derivatives went right back to the beginnings. It gave me a greater appreciation for what came after. How many AC/DC fans back in the day, for example, knew that Angus' playing (and stage moves) were hugely influenced by Chuck Berry? How many even knew who Chuck Berry was? Well, if your parents passed on their music to you, you knew. Sure, as a teen you tend to reject your parent's music, among other things, but we come back to it later with greater appreciation. I wish more parents would share their music with their kids. And yes, my Mom often sang that refrain to me when I gave her trouble. 🙂

I had a big smile on my face with Yakety Yak. I was eleven years old when this came out and I always enjoyed listening to and singing along with this song. From my pre-teen perspective... mom is giving all the instructions and the kid talks back by saying "Yakety Yak." Dad, sitting in his easy chair reading the paper hears the kid and corrects him by saying "Don't talk back." Dance of the time would have been swing. Dances like the Twist and Locomotion didn't come in until later. When I became a teenager, my hair style was a curl in the front and a duck-tail in the back, also know as a DA (Duck's Ass). Speaking about hair styles, Amber I love the way you've been wearing your hair.

There's a long history of black novelty records, going way back to the 20s. I've heard Chuck Berry say he really wanted to be a novelty record star, but got stuck inventing rock and roll instead. His "My Ding-A-Ling" record was one of his personal favorite songs he ever wrote. A lot of the old novelty records were pretty racy, with lots of double entendre. I've got an old collection of 40s novelties with songs like "The Honey Dripper" and "If It Don't Fit Don't Force It" and "Big Ten Inch Record". And a lot of those really old blues records are obviously about sex. The Coasters were a clean, radio-friendly version of those old black novelty singers. Kind of a cross between black novelty songs, doo-wop, and classic R&B. After the Coasters, comedy songs changed. I think the Coasters were maybe the last in a long tradition of those old-style black comic singers.

1974 my dad bought us kids our first Wildcat record player along with a few lp's to play. Ray Charles and the Coasters planted the seeds of my taste in music! We sang this to eachother all the time as kids. Love watching you get to know them. Down in Mexico and Poison Ivy are classics.

They did look good! Dressed well, groomed, professional, authentic, talented, no auto-tune. They preformed and entertained and were good at it. Those days were the Golden Age of Rock and Roll.

This song has a special place in my heart. When I was younger (probably like 5 or 6) we did a "jazz" routine to this song for our dance recital. And we wore a super chic red dress with feathers at the bottoms and then matching red feathers in our hair. And I have never felt like I ever killed in an outfit the same way I did in that one lol.

This was written by Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller, who wrote all The Coasters' hits as well as "Hound Dog" and others for Elvis. Amazing writers.

I was lucky to see the Coasters live in concert and they were a LOT of fun and entertaining. Not only did they have the talent and voices to cover a lot of groups of the time, they seemed to have a lot of fun with each other and included us in the jokes. That was a very long time ago.

On your next 80’s reaction think about Lisa Lisa and the cult jame she was the precursor to Jo Lo a beautiful Puerto Rican woman who in braced her curves with a unique voice. I wonder if I can take home, All cried out, Head to toe are few of their 80’s hits

The Coasters _were_ straight comedy *and* great singers as a group. You should check out "Poison Ivy," "Charlie Brown," "Searchin'," "Youngblood," "Along Came Jones," and my personal favorite, an actual comedy skit called "T'aint Nothin' to Me." And the great King Curtis on sax was practically a member of the group. You should check out his great track "Memphis Soul Stew." And King Curtis's performance on "Yakety Yak" inspired a kind-of parody track by sax player Boots Randolph called "Yackety Sax."

I feel like you’d get a kick out of They Might Be Giants. They’ve got a unique sound and a few weird/entertaining/educational/funny songs to choose from. Some of my favorites are: - Birdhouse in Your Soul - Don’t Let’s Start - Istanbul - They Might Be Giants - “Why Does the Sun Shine? (The Sun is a Mass of Incandescent Gas)” & “Why Does the Sun Really Shine?” - James K. Polk - I Palindrome I - My Evil Twin - Particle Man - Where Do They Make Balloons? - Au Contraire - Someone Keeps Moving My Chair - Your Racist Friend
