Maybe your desire to draw is there, but motivation is low. Maybe, you want to practice and get better, but don’t seem to get around to it. Maybe you’re putting off your big project and just doodling around instead.
There’s a pretty simple idea to get these done, that will work if we put enough things in place for you to succeed.

I'm glad you mentioned tiny habits. I feel like the best way for me to start drawing was saying "draw for 5 minutes a day" it made the pressure of "be amazing" go away. Sometimes you need the lowest bar to jump over to feel like you can actually jump over a bar.

"I learned pretty late in life that what I was experiencing was ADHD" -> I 👏can 👏 relate 👏!! I wasn't diagnosed until I was 32. Getting this diagnosis was my catalyst for reframing my lack of motivation as a problem with stimulation, not "laziness".👏I think this is a lesson that everyone can benefit from, not just folks with executive function disorders. The more we look for ways to make habits like these easy to start and stimulating to do, the easier it is to show up consistently.

thank you so much, I have adhd and projects in particular are so difficult for me whereas screwing around is easy. The practice of planning out a project just isn't in my blood, so any time I abandon something or forget about it I feel really bad about myself. Also thank you for talking about personal/work mode and how to code those times for your brain. Putting on different clothes and working in a different location seriously helps shift my mindset and helps with distractions.

I go through the same thing! Had adhd my whole life but only managed to get diagnosed last year after pushing the subject a thousand times against my mother lol It's a struggle but I'm sure passion can get us through! I know how productivity (or the lack of) affects us, but as long as you're trying, you'll get there - it's better than doing nothing at all. It's been a journey teaching myself to be more accepting of my issues and how they affect my behavior, motivation and everything, and every day I learn something new. Hopefully your journey will be as enlightening as mine has been. It's difficult! But I believe in you and I know you'll make through it! I wish you well Sarah! Hope to see your work out there someday! ^^

The first time I wanted to get started on drawing, I had always failed to stay consistent (I have ADHD too btw), I would always say "nah, I'll leave it for tomorrow" but that tomorrow never came for 2 WHOLE YEARS, I literally had an old Wacom intuos tablet gathering dust on the shelf all that time waiting to be used, but about a year or so ago, I had finally cut the BS and said, alright, I've been delaying the inevitable for too much time now, and it was during that time that I learned that I needed to stay consistent and that motivation wasn't going to find me, that I needed to find it once I had already started drawing, not the other way, and since I learned this, I've improved my drawing skills exponentially, before starting, I could barely draw a stick figure, now, while I am still not that great, I have been making a ton of progress, and I am proud of it, in fact, just yesterday i bought my first iPad (the iPad Mini) and an apple pencil 2, so far, it has been an incredible experience, but back to the point, motivation will rarely ever spark spontaneously and come to you, it comes while working as you said, in fact, i'd say that i don't feel motivated about 85 percent of the time, yet, I stay consistent because you have to learn how to force yourself to do what you have to do even if you don't feel like it at the moment, people always tell me I seem so motivated to get better at it, but i'm not, what I have is determination and willpower, which I have been constructing over the last year.

I think it's interesting because, with me, I am both practicing illustration and game development, and I find that raw creative work like illustration is best for me to do in my early waking hours, while more technical problem solving is better later in the day. Not sure, why, but usually that's when my more technical ideas strike, while early on is when my more abstract ideas do.
@dallleekah4035
@dallleekah4035 2 жыл бұрын
Replace game development by editing animations and that describes me perfectly! In the morning, my brain is ready to tackle anything abstract-leaning, whether as the afternoon is focused on technical problem-solving. Something about the consistency of technological issues is a lot less draining for me than creating from (more or less) scratch! Keep it up, wonderful human!
@MrGooGone
@MrGooGone 2 жыл бұрын
@@dallleekah4035 You too! :) Cool to hear that I am not the only one who notices this! I find that more technical stuff often times stresses me early in the day because I don't always comprehend stuff fully, while later in the day I find the abstract boundless nature of art to be stressful because there's too many options, so timing it that other way works well for me.

This is definitely a system I'm interested in. Like you I was diagnosed late in life with ADHD and a whole lotta things about my life suddenly made sense. I was told that planning things would be helpful to me - but I always heard that and never heeded it because planning was - is hard for me and I didn't think it'd help. So hearing it again in the context of another artist is pretty encouraging. I'm going to have to start small, but I hope and pray this can start to fix my issue of not being motivated to do anything about this project that I've been telling myself since I was a kid I want to do.

I really appreciated this video. Like you, I too discovered that I have ADHD later in my life. I have always loved art and drawing, I even went to college for it. However because of the amount of stressed I created for myself for graduation i.e. deadlines, I burn myself out of art. I haven't picked up my sketch books since...until recently, in my mid 30s. I hope to get back into drawing and the creative process that I loved as a child. Thank you for creating this video.

OK an actually relevant comment: the jump (ha) cut to your reading chair was exquisite. I'm not quite to a habit of regular drawing yet, but I've been doing nightly journaling/daily writing. I've missed a bit of my Journaling, which is more life based/mental health check ins, my daily writing has been going pretty well! it's usually like your note dump, where ideas and stream of consciousness nonsense end up on the page. But I've also been able to track ideas, make outlines, and even complete 10 pages of story work that I turned in for a grad school application. What may not seem like much at the start, adds up to a whole lot over time. We love good habit building systems

I’ve been struggling to get work done for ages now (partially because my internet has been awful so my art streams have been giving me nothing but problems and it took TWO MONTHS for my ISP to admit they were at fault) but I remember as a teen I used to be able to follow a simple schedule in the summer-wake up, read until noon, write until 2, and do whatever you want after that. (I tried to incorporate “draw until 4” into that but it didn’t really work out.) I wound up getting a ton of reading and writing done as a result, and I’ve always wanted to get back to a schedule like that, so I think I’ll try this method here. Let’s hope this works…!

Yesssss I realized a few weeks ago that the best way to fix my mood, motivation, etc. was just to be awake when the sun is out! I was going to sleep at like 7am and waking up at dinner time. I'm graduting in a month and man, I'm so excited to put all these tips into full use! It's a little difficult rn tho bc of school but I'm ready for when I'm done! Also a funny thing about trying to find the best habits that lead to motivation, I was obsessed with custom mechanical keyboards all of last year and when I finally built one, I was suddenly writing all the time??? Like two weeks ago before midterms I wrote 15k words in one day for a personal project (that'll become a work project in a month ^^) Awesome video as always, dude!! :D Such a good idea to work on a little of everything everyday too. Sounds like a great way to live in the moment instead of waiting until whenever to start your personal/fun project ^^

This seems like an incredibly accessible version of the same things I've heard for years - I'll certainly have to try it. I'll update this comment later based on my progress, but for now, my notes on the video: - Just like digestion of food converts into energy, repeated routine and habits converts to consistent creative inspiration. - Create a sustainable, enjoyable habit. - Allow yourself time to rest, don't burn yourself out while trying to improve. - Prepare before you start implementing this habit, not after.

The improvement your videos' quality has been subjected to recently is nothing short of a proof for this method! (Watching you is even more of a blast now!) Drawing hasn't been coming easy to me recently, despite having a very strict routine, but it more so comes from my own perfectionism getting in the way. However, I would not be as fired up to work on my art and improve if it was not for you and your videos. I've realised that I was peculiarly lacking in my construction fundamentals and studying the way you make your art look 3D and tangible helped SO MUCH in building up that skill I had been putting on the back burner for so long. Thank you so much for sharing your experience and suggestions. It was literally yesterday when those feelings of inadequacy and hopelessness last struck (I recently found out I have ADHD as well, which has explained so much about how I do and feel about most things), and besides the perfect timing of your video, this kind of constructive encouragement goes a long way. I also appreciate how you touched on motivation, creativity, *and* improvement, as much of the advice I've seen tends to focus on the former, to the point where I've been unsure whether the other two aspects are even linked to it. I suppose the answer isn't a simple "yes", but being reassured that it isn't a "no" does make me doubt myself a little less, if that makes sense. All things to keep in mind, and I'm grateful for you taking the time to talk about them. Best of luck with your art goals!

It's interesting that you mention that some of your challenges hark back to a late diagnosis of ADHD (0:38). I have a textbook case of adult ADHD, but there are no local doctors available to diagnose and treat it. So I have a lot of masking and coping mechanisms in place that allow me to hold down a "regular" job and consistently get good reviews, but by the time I get home and have time to do anything creative, all my willpower reserves have been utterly depleted by pretending to be neurotypical for 4-8 hours. It's to the point now where even trying to finish a doodle feels like trying to climb a cliff with lead weights around my wrists and ankles (whereas before I got this job, I was drawing and writing ALL. THE. TIME. and I loved it). I haven't lost the skills, but the enjoyment factor is significantly lower, due to how much of a struggle it is. How did you get to a place where you could do creative things for a living? Is that something you were able to aim for from the beginning, or did you have to push past challenges like mine to get to where you are? Either way, if you're comfortable sharing, I would like to hear more on this subject.

To be honest, I wish I had the focus to make a schedule like you, or keep to one, or even an idea of what the schedule even is.

I've been toying with the idea of trying to organise my days a bit more, particularly having to balance creativity with uni work, so this video is really well-timed. I'm curious how you handle those times when inspiration *does* strike without warning, outside of your scheduled drawing time? Do you make a note for yourself, but save it for when you've set aside time to draw, or do you try to do something with it even if it disrupts the schedule a bit?

This is a good idea. I just have to figure how out to plan a schedule when I am going to interrupted randomly anyway.

This is great ideas for managing time and art skills! But I just want to ask something if it is okay, do you have any tips on how to avoid thinking of your goals all at once? As someone with adhd I have a hard time setting short term goals and stress out

Drawing everyday has definitely worked for me. The Main thing if you will try that is to do it in a way that AVOIDS burn out. If you can’t do it in such a way that avoids burn out, do try less frequency but yeah, you need some discipline whichever it is. The reason for my daily drawings? Yeah so that I can have it as a routine. That’s the actual main reason.

I have to disagree on the idea that we have the most motivation in the morning. Maybe that's how it is for the average person, but personally speaking I have zero energy and zero motivation to do anything for the first few hours in the day. It is far easier for me to get myself to start drawing in the second half of the day, after I've come home from my workout and gotten a bit of food in me.

In my opinion one of the most important things about your mindset that you can change is to stop thinking about drawing as a chore and instead develop a habit of drawing. Treat it like part of your routine.

To hit your (art or not) goals you must surround yourself with people who want you to succeed, otherwise they will subconsciously tear your motivation down with indifference. If you're in a group of 5 people, 4 of which are losers and underachievers, you will soon find yourself the fifth one.
These mistakes will HOLD YOU BACK from growing your art on social media
