Back in the 90s i spoke to a driver who was delivering to an rdc he had a new Scania and said he was on good money , but it turned out when he was tipped and on the way to reload his rate changed and he was not paid until reloaded and most were 30 to 40 miles a way. At the time my firm paid £6 an hour for 8 hours and £9 over with double time Sundays and between 9 pm and 6am £1-20 dark money i worked out i was £50 more a week better off driving a 5 year old ERF. It all changed in around 96 when a new company took us over and put us on a salary with no extra for Sundays or night work. You can get£ 11-40 to £12-85 an hour in Aldi filling shelves with some firms not paying for CPC training and only paying £12 -£15 an hour for 60 hours with all the pressure and responsibility you have to ask if it's worth it. I spent 38 years in transport now retired.

haha best way to incentivise drivers to prove that it can take 9 hours to drive that 30 mile distance between pick-up/drop off points... That is if they'll ever find someone who is willing to do this job for less than you can get in a supermarket or warehouse...

In a lot of cases tipping a load is harder and more dangerous than babysitting a steering wheel. I say that with respect as I'm a C +E myself. Try closing a curtain in howling gale force winds and torrential rain, hmmm❓ Or, pulling badly maintained curtains that have seized rollers in icy conditions. Standing next to a bulk powder tanker for an hour in the dark in the middle of winter blowing the product into a sylo and then with hands that refuse to work due to the cold packing the heavy hoses away. Or the ADR tanker drivers with the same problems but with those guys the actual delivery is the most dangerous part of their day. WHAT A CROCK OF 💩

Form a Union, start a Drivers organisation if you dont like the word Union! Until you do that, NOTHING will change! If your not willing to organise, stop whingeing and moaning!! Simples!

Should be one rate, then everybody knows what they are earning, at least this is simple though, some companies have so many bonus payments for fuel economy, non damage or just attendance its difficult to work out if they've paid you correctly and if you query it they'll fobb you off with some reason you're out of pocket. I work for different companies, one is a day rate and you get that whether its 15hours or 1 hour, swings and roundabouts, but I've rarely done a 15 hour shift, 10 is normal, but many times I've run in a couple of hours, job done go home.

Many firms have awful wage structures that are designed to short change drivers and confuse them too, I have the wage structure for one of the biggest haulage firms in the UK and can email it if you wish to do a video on it, they don't openly publish their shitty pay scheme in job adverts. I believe drivers should have a basic rate, an overtime rate, a weekend/bank holiday rate and night out and meal allowance all this other performance nonsense and the retention bonuses and variations need to go. Basic HGV driver should be on £20 an hour or very close to it and all overtime at least time and a quarter.

@gravemind65363 ай бұрын
Try to get on with one of the supermarkets, depending on your financial responsibility consider agency work, it's the right time of year golden quarter more drivers needed, you will find most of the haulage industry is like the job in this video with low pay and scummy pay schemes. Consider class 2 work if you can't get class 1 work it's a start. Alternatively you could consider doing something entirely different because the haulage industry is awful, I have class 1 and my bus license, I'm going back on the buses this haulage stuff is BS I'll out earn 95% of HGV drivers. Consider once you have experience getting a HIAB ticket as that work pays more and tramping is rare, you can also consider getting your ADR but the class 2 ADR work can be hard going (delivering heating oil and Gas canisters to rural farms, caravan sites and scenic and non HGV freindly rural villages). If you take my advice and do bus driving instead Arriva and Stagecoach both train you up free of charge. Ignore my negativity by the way you might actually like HGV driving or get lucky and find a brilliant employer. But if you don't like it consider buses instead or something entirely different.

Different rates of pay in the same shift - Definitely NOT! In fairness to Keedwells, at least they're up front on what they pay although, Keedwells have always been known as poor payers. Class 1 drivers should be on a basic £20.00 for days!

This disingenuous claim of 52 k per year, do you really want to work 60 hours plus per week and sleeping in a tin can to get this type of money, drivers have always been and will continue to be exploited by greedy firms that will never change, what you should look for as a driver is a job where you are home every or most nights and you average between 40 and 50 hours per week, there are jobs out there that pay around 50 k per year for less than 50 hours per week and you are home every night, my advice is to continually look for these jobs and if you are unfortunately working for one of the cowboy firms make it clear to them that you are looking elsewhere and are only willing to do the minimum so don't expect miracles
