I think we continue to underestimate the PSA Set Registry builders and collectors. They have deep pockets and are quietly pushing a lot of this high end market as well.

I just sold this card (2018 Panini Cyber Monday Pyramids Shohei Ohtani ROOKIE PATCH 1/1 #37 BGS 7.5) on Fanatics Collect for $1000 via fixed price listing. I bought it for $480 on Fanatics Collect in May. I think sometimes past comp is not that relevant with the right card.

There is definitely something going on with fanatics collect. I think you hit the nail on the head with fanatics bringing in a lot of higher end buyers and eyeball. There's been record sales, over the last month, of 90s Jordan inserts on fanatics collect also.

Goldin stuff also went for a lot lately. My 'out there' theory...the whales have extra cash to deploy...coming up on the election, a lot of people get antsy about putting money in the stock market...maybe they're looking to use that money elsewhere in more (cough) 'comforting' investments.

Fanatics collect has consistently had "sales" way over comps. Regarding the population 1 of 0, they currently have a Mookie RC auto listed as PSA 10/10/DNA...that is PSA authenticated. Something really fishy is going on since the fanatics takeover...

Good stuff! It's been talked to death on many sites, but sounds like guys were hitting on the whole 'best card of best player in best grade' talk. I just wait and save and avoid all those second tier cards. Those did well during covid, but no boom? Like you said...more downside risk. Anyway... I was also bidding on that JoRam and Freddie, but yes...way too high. Who picked up the red Freddie refractor last year? What a genius! Lastly, TeaPot came off the top rope with the Two Girls One Cup allusion!!!

I do think playoff stats from the past 15 to 20 years should be weighted more in HOF consideration because of the amount of games. Back in the day there were 2 playoff teams and mabye 7 games and that small sample should not be held against the all time greats

I spoke to a guy who just selling a Red Topps Chrome Update Bobby Witt Red Rookie Auto /5 RAW… He sold it RAW.. I believe it was previously a redemption, could be wrong, but I spoke to him asking him what was wrong with it, & he said he didn’t want to grade it because he doesn’t have a memebership & it would take too long blah blah blah, he sent me extra pics & the card looked absolutely perfect.. sold for $3200.. sticker auto, but $3200 seems an absolute steal

Chris here - I don't know. The update Red auto is like you said - a sticker. And Witt has an on card topps chrome auto as well. In fact he's got a TON of rookie autos. A chrome update sticker auto - even a red - doesn't get me too excited. Another raw recently sold on ebay for $4k so $3200 off ebay isnt bad at all!

Is there a disconnect between the ultra high-end market and the rest of the card market? These sales all seem surprisingly high while the rest of the market seems to be haivng the normal peaks and valleys. Do we think high-end collectors aggregating funds to buy these very rare pieces (causing the prices to be multiple whats expected) or was this auction just a blip on the radar?

This week when the Federal Reserve starts to cut interest rates; the Macro economy will improve over the next two years. The stock market is at an all time high - so if you are wealthy and future economic outlook looks good then you can buy the nice things you want. Alternative investments like Sportscards do really well when the fiat currency turns to crap - this should happen again around 2035 with Social Security going bankrupt. Maybe the buyers of these cards even have an exit strategy in and around that period. Haha!!! All nice cards…no matter what the price. 😂⚾️

Im curious why theres so many bids on these auctions. These are high-end cards. Do you nornally see this volume of bids on a 10k+ card. I dont want to make any false assumptions, but these lots remind me of when PWCC was on eBay. 40 to 60+ bids seem high.

In ten years very, very few of these cards are going to come close to the current sales prices. Way too many variations and at some point the insanity of needed a PSA 10 instead of a PSA 9 or even an SGC 10 will go away. If you need a microscope to tell the difference between your cards, you are taking this way too seriously. Its crazy a PSA 9 sells for less than the same card ungraded. All this will go away and cards will bust.

Mookie had a 10.7 bWAR in 2018, Witt has a 9.1 bWAR currently this season. Not too sure what you are talking about.

Scott here-What Witt is doing is definitely special, but Mookie's age 25 season 2018 was even more impressive. He had a 30/30 season, hit .346, 10.7 war, won the gold glove, won the silver slugger, won a batting title, and won the world series. He also only played in 136 games and had more sb and hr than Witt has so far into the season with 149 games. Witt should pass him in both of those, but Mookie definitely has hit this level before. With that all being said, Chris may in fact still have a crush on Mookie 😳.
