Great job as usual gentlemen! To weigh in, I don’t see another current player who has the power/speed dynamic, as does Sho. Acuna isn’t getting faster, and I don’t see 50 hr’s from him. Ohtani looks to be this decades Trout. I hold and am now selling a lot of Ohtani personally. The thing I find so awesome is who Ohtani is…he’s a great guy and a global ambassador. Who else do we have that can carry that flame? Thx again!!

I have a small Ohtani collection with my "headliner" being a Topps Chrome RC auto purple refractor. I love the card and I love Ohtani, but part of me is thinking "maybe I should sell this now and try to buy later." Then the other part of me is saying "if you sell that card, you will NEVER be able to afford a great Ohtani RC auto again." A real battle of conscious.

Another fun pod fellas! I only had a few low-mid end Ohtani's, I sold them all earlier in the season. Made an ok return, probably up 10-15% after fees, but would have done way better if I sold today, but I'm still happy! As a collector, I take rarity into more consideration than value, I don't overextend myself so if it's something that I'd like at a fair market price, I'm good. That being said, if you want a low/mid-end Ohtani, do not buy now.. Almost every card in every sport in the history of sports cards has less eyes on it during the offseason, that's the time to buy. The hype is so high right now, I can guarantee that less people will be talking about Ohtani in December/January, hence a much better likelihood of cheaper prices. Regarding high-end, I have no idea, I just spent $150 on a Greinke and that's a lot for me to spend on a card!

I did well with the low end Ohtani rookies. Less risk and a ton of upside. I bought a lot of his base rookies raw in the $5-10 dollar range during the off season, easily selling for $30-50 now. Thats >500% return. I also sent a few for grading, a dozen came back as PSA 10s (keeping for now). I do not own any of his rookie autos though, so I don't know if you can also get 500% return on those? I do feel (by experience) that it is much easier to sell $30-50 cards versus $2-3K cards.

I think over the next few years it's really tough to judge the Ohtani Market. I thought the market was crazy back during covid and it wouldn't last but here we are. The market is getting even crazier so I really don't know what'll happen short term. I personally think in the long run there's more of a chance of the cards declining in value then continuing to rise more than what it's already at. When he hits his 3rd MVP this year I expect another uptick and if he manages a World Series win I can see an uptick but outside of those two scenarios. How much better can he be than what he's already it. Also to top it off the more the cards continue to go up the more they eliminate potential buyers. They're getting to a point that they aren't affordable for most people. Even the low end. Who wants to spend $100-$200 on a base card that has tens of thousands out there in circulation. Then again that's just my perspective.
@SpitballinCards
@SpitballinCards Ай бұрын
chris here - you are exactly right that as the prices continue to rise, the potential buyer pool shrinks and shrinks. And I also agree on your take with the base cards. That's one reason I think a Finest refractor is a more interesting buy than a topps base card.

Ohtani has the international spotlight and folks in other countries will spend big dollars on him and even the low end RC cards will go up. Everything with him will have the potential for crazy prices. The what if he does great in the post season, pitches and helps them win, even a loss in the WS still could have huge potential for his cards. Another MVP or two or three even means you missed the boat. Again, his market no matter how many cards he has there is just too much demand. Even just the flippers win on him. I got into card collecting a few years ago because of Shohei, so I didn’t realize how much card values could fluctuate. From my perspective, his success has attracted many new collectors. these newcomers including myself, unlike longtime collectors, often aren’t familiar with the true value of cards, which leads to some of his cards selling for prices that many collectors find surprising or unacceptable. Is there a ceiling (outside of a generalized expanded collector base) to a modern player before it approaches Babe Ruth “store of value” status? Long term, I would want to try to envision where Ohtani stands against the greats, and also how his huge supply of cards in great condition would work against him. Looking at the 90s, the highest value cards come from sets: PMG, credentials, 1st GU jersey set, etc. Not necessarily rookie cards.

Jeff here: probably a lot. but he was reallllly inefficient. He made 42 outs on the basepaths in one season! FORTY-TWO! The better question might be, "How many steals would Rickey get if he were as efficient as Ohtani?" Prob 150+
@slimthumbtak
@slimthumbtak Ай бұрын
@@Blabbin_Bout_Slabbin Penalizing him for inefficiency is essentially penalizing him for the era in which he played. Not to mention he grew up a multi-sport athlete who was actually better at football but went into baseball per his mother's advice because baseball players have longer careers. Whereas, Ohtani has been dead focused on baseball since he was a little kid. He also has an entire analytics team at his disposal, ipads in the dugout, etc. He probably doesn't even sneeze if the analytics say it's not an efficient decision. Of course he'll be more efficient. He lives and plays in a more efficient era. Rickey played on overwhelming natural ability and instincts. He got on base with no one in front of him, he was running. Period. There was no squad of number crunchers to tell him it wasn't efficient. When Rickey played, WAR was a bad thing. I mean, it still is. But you get what I mean. Penalizing him for not being efficient just seems unfair. He was just a human being playing a game. Not an automaton making calculated moves based on the data provided by his team of analysts. End of day. Both players are incredible. I just don't think it's fair to compare them based on efficiency when Rickey didn't have 1/100,000,000th of the analytical information at his disposal that Ohtani has.

There are a lot of Ohtani cards that have been printed, but if the American and Asian markets believes he is a generational talent, do you think people are just buying one of his unique/popular cards? Even with the 300 print run card Scottie mentioned, 300 of the cards could be owned all by one person. They could also be held onto for decades on purpose or forgotten in a box of cards in your grandma's basement.

I've been thinking the exact opposite. I don't understand why people are deciding to buy his cards right now. I guess I can understand the people buying his cards that are fans, but I find it strange that collectors are buying his cards right now. I'm wondering why they didn't buy his cards earlier; he's 2017 ROY, 4X all-star, and 2X MVP with talent people neve seen before. it finally takes a guy to go 50-50 for people to buy his cards when they're at their highs? I'm wondering why collectors think buying the day or day after he gets 50-50 is a good time buy. They didn't want it sooner?

He hasn't even pitched yet, so I don't understand why the 2020 fear would be over. Ohtani has been the MVP favorite for a while, but there wasn't much movement. When Ohtani moved from a trash franchise to a huge collectors market, there was just a little movement. Buying his card when signed with the Dodgers or during the year buying it for his 40-40 makes sense, I just find it strange why you would wait until the day or day after 50-50. Even if the Dodgers got swept this year, I think most people thought that this was going to be his worst overall Dodger season, considering him not pitching and not counting those backend of the 10 year contract years. Seems predictable that they will be higher going into next year as people will say "hey did you know the guy who did 50/50 also pitches?". Now, he could do poorly on either (or both) sides of the ball next year and then the prices may go down, or he could continue to do what he was doing from 2021-2023 and then some (playoffs, WS, etc.). But even if he were to get injured and never pitch again, now people are excited at him trying to go for 60/60 lol.
