I was in a big city in the south-west, used to pass a couple of homeless guys every morning. So one morni g I bought them a coffee and a cheeseburger. I spoke mainly to one of them, asking his story. He said he had worked for forty years in a factory, collecting metal pieces in a mobile skip, had lived in a boarding house mostly. The factory had closed, he moved out of the boarding house, finished up on the street. He looked over 60, so how was he ever going to get a job? There are many like him. Just had a little job, didn't ask much of life. Government globalist policies ruined his life. They make billions making stuff in low-wage and low taxation countries. We leave 80 billions in Afghanistan, send billions to Ukraine, while Ukranian elites cavort in Ferraris in Monaco. There is something wrong with our priorities!

In the very early 80’s, when NAFTA was enacted, it was the beginning of sending U.S. manufacturing & jobs overseas. It’s had a devastating effect on Americans ever since. No security deposit, no first and last, all utilities included, except your $3 a month landline corded telephone. Food dirt cheap. The cost of living was easily affordable. I sold my half of the business and moved to Oregon. My mistake was not saving or investing money intelligently. My fiance started having severe mental issues and became convinced by the voices in her head that I needed to leave the apartment I was paying for. She reported me for domestic abuse despite the fact I never laid a hand on her. By law I couldnt be in contact with her. I found myself freezing cold sleeping in my van thanking God I had a vehicle. Four years earlier I was in the highest tax bracket. I wasn't on drugs. I didnt have mental issues. This kind of thing can happen to anyone. I worked with the homeless many years with different organizations. People don't realize that a lot of homeless are not what you expect. There are a lot of homeless children, teens and families. There are also a lot of homeless veterans and adults with disabilities. It's a complex issue because every homeless person is different and has a different circumstance. A lot are trying to escape an abusive household or circumstance (runaways like kids and teens or battered wives and so on). The economic crisis is making things worse. Where I am in Arizona we have many of these encampments popping up. Local government just keeps stealing money but none goes to help the people. Typical stuff. I think it would make sense to subdivide the homeless into different groups. There are people who just fell into poverty and lost their home because of recession, there are the people who are homeless because of drug problems/mental health and there are people who are homeless because they either entered the country illegally or are wanted by law for any reason. These three rough categories are very different problems and therefore also require different approaches as solution.

I agree. A lot of veterans choose this because of the strict rules that come with low income or income based housing. They simply don't want to give up their freedoms.
@joeldavid738310 ай бұрын
1st, landlords are greed, just because they can raise up the rent up to 5 percent plus cpi each year, which will be 9 percent each year, they will do that every year which causes the cost of living to go up. 2nd, owning a home is becoming expensive. I think the government should dictate the prices based on affordability so that the realtors and builders can find a way to lower its cost. The government should lower its taxes too to compensate to lower the cost.
@napoleonfeanor10 ай бұрын
@@joeldavid7383 very generalising. Landlords need to do a lot of things,too, and their costs rise,too. Sure, there are greedy faceless corporations doing that. I think the law varies a lot within the USA but government price controls are no good idea. Lowering taxes for home owning and for building affordable housing are a better idea. But any such improvements will not address the big population of those with mental health and substance abuse problems.

To all you bleeding-heart naysayers out there, now go ahead and try to convince me that their homelessness is not a choice! Try to convince me that these people are just the victims of a few bad breaks that led to their homelessness. Try to convince me that this can happen to anyone. I am not denying that someone can indeed end up homeless for a short period of time. But normal people almost always have friends and family that will put them up for a short time until they recover and get back on their feet. And for those who don't, there is an expansive system of government programs to help them. All they have to do is conform with a few basic rules and participate in their rehabilitation. I've read about and seen films of homeless camps in the Great Depression(1930s)and it was completely different then.Rules of conduct,safety,and sanitation were enforced by the homeless themselves.The camps and dwellings were kept litter free and as clean as possible.People lived there with their kids and everyone was pretty safe.Sure there were some troublemakers but they were dealt with and either shaped up or left.The difference I see is even during a Depression the mentally ill were in hospital and people still regarded each h other as human beings.

I drove recently around an area of Los Angeles where you had an encampment under the freeway that looked apocalyptic. Even worse than on this video, and then 2 blocks away you had 5 million + homes, Apartments that rented for 3500+ a month for a 2 bedroom, and a private school (primary school) that costs 40 K+ a year in tuition. The wealth gap is insane in Los Angeles, and buying a house is out of reach for even people making 6 figures a year. Hi Scott, Salinas born and raised, but longtime gone (1980's). I remember those migrant camps - I had school friends who lived in them - the big difference, other than being forced to live there, is that you never saw a piece of trash on the grounds and even if they had dirt floors, they kept them swept. Migrant dads may've had a little tequila or cervesas from time to time, but these were proud, hard working families who were not strung out on dope, stealing, fighting or killing each other. And they were PROUD to be here and they wanted to assimilate - and they did. Why? Because these people felt grateful, not entitled. They weren't victims and they were here for the dream, not the free shit. But, that was back when California was the best place in the whole wide world - truly, paradise in the 1950's, 60's and 70's - before the jackals and politicians depleted her natural resources and devoured what was left of her as fast as they could -- they're now just borrowing or raising taxes to grift what they still can to fund their lavish lifestyles - like vultures picking the bones clean as California falls. It is shameful. It's like watching something beautiful be slowly murdered and I can't do anything but watch.

What about these people on the net in their outfitted expensive vans choosing to be posh homeless to make money on the net? Do you think these willing homeless are " high"? Of course not because they aren't POOR! What about the spoiled brats of the upper class shooting up , drinking snorting and popping pills just to have fun at parties? Even though they ARE high do you judge or sympathize? You sympathize because they aren't POOR! What about all the famous people who overdose: Elvis, Heath Ledger, Phillip Hoffman, to name a few of the SCORES, who despite their extraordinary talent, love & support and wealth to fix any problem still choose drugs? Do you feel judgement or compassion? Compassion of course because famous drug users ARENT POOR! Your issue is not with homeless, since yuppie vanlifers are homeless. Your issue isn't with drug users because lots of famous and rich people do drugs. Your issue is with people being poor and where ever there is wealth there will disproportionately be poverty. You beat me to the punch by 3 weeks. Nick is going into dangerous territory with junkies with nothing to lose. Getting arrested for assault gets the junky off the street, 3 meals, an orange jumpsuit to wear, and a bed to sleep on.

It’s all so depressing. They want to live like this. Drugs, mental illness, I don’t see how it can change now. Mental hospitals should have never been shut down in the 80’s.

Some could be working, car wash, fast food restaurants, dish washers, just some of the low paying jobs! Can’t afford $2000 a month apartments! If they have a car how much car insurance? It’s sad, but mental health issues are another reason! Please don’t say everyone is a druggie, minimum wage, minimum education, mental health issues all contribute to homelessness!

I think one of the biggest factor CA has highest homelessness is due to weather. Imagine having a no home, having a nice weather is a huge advantage.

Thank you for getting out and actually talking to these homeless people. It gives all of us viewers a grounds eye view of the homeless situation. One of the reasons you see so many homeless in California is not only due to the high cost of housing, but because of the weather. It's easier to live outside in a place with pretty nice year round weather. They have a huge homeless issue in Hawaii too. One idea is just to have cities in California allot certain areas for the homeless to camp and park legally, yet allow city utilities and garbage service, kind of like a campground. They could even employ people from the homeless designated space to monitor it and thus insure the cleanliness, security and order of each camp.

I've seen a few exposés on the homeless here in the U.S., but not to this extent. It's eerie to not see one person. I'm glad I clicked to watch. It's a wake up call to examine how I live, what I do with my money and what I can do for the poor, the needy and the homeless in my area. For whatever reason, this made me think of Michael Jackson's Earth Song, with some of the lyrics applicable to this crisis: I used to dream I used to glance beyond the stars Now I don't know where we are Although I know we've drifted far Sad indeed. Thank you, Nick.

Sometimes it is forgetting about a lot more than that!! Some people have a hard time forgetting that their parents treated them like crap, and being molested, abused mentally and everytime they tried to trust someone they took advantage of them also! They are trying to forget about being raped, hit, called names, and they had no support or anyone they could trust! It's not as simple as, they want to forget about being poor or not having a job! It definitely goes a lot deeper than that!! I pray for them!! 🙏🙏🙏

That's still no excuse. There are people who survived the holocaust & did something with their life. Life can be hard for many but that doesn't mean you give up. You attain employment & you work hard & save your $$ & stay away from drugs. Many people have pulled themselves out of homelessness.

@@christinarobleto1786 You can't just assume anyone can do that, some ppl can take more than others and some ppl have support , you don't know every circumstance! I was molested by both my brothers my step father, picked on by my sister and mother, 2 girl cousins molested me when my aunt was babysitting me and another boy cousin by another Aunt, I had no support what so ever when I became 18 and spoke the truth, my sister took my brother's side, my mom told me to get over it. I was gang raped by 7 guys when I was 25 got pregnant and had to get an abortion, was raped again by a guy that after he raped me he took my car! I have other things that have happened to me also! Am I supposed to just get over it? It's not that easy! I have ADHD, depression and PTSD. Excuse me if I do not conform to the way YOU think I should act or be as a person! @@christinarobleto1786 Don't be too self righteous. If you have no family, no support structure, you can run low on your luck. The problem is not, that sometimes you simply need help. The problem is, that in this broken world abuse is wide spread. Combine this with greed and the "me first" attitude and you have hell on earth.

I was a nurse and became disabled. My temporary disability ran out before I got through the process for permanent disability. I ended up homeless. Most homeless people that I met are not drug addicts or mentally ill unless you count the depression from becoming homeless. I don't know what benefits this person is talking about that homeless people get. I couldn't find help anywhere. No there are not shelters or any other help.
