Drawn together wasn't that bad, but it was hanging on its own premise for most of the show. It didn't develop very much after the pilot. Still, as someone with Asian friends, the one line threatening Not-Pikachu to "walk around his house without taking his shoes off" still sticks with me to this day. I still remember my Asian friend's reaction when he saw that episode. Silence as he thinks about it, and then roaring laughter as he realizes its ALL true with his relatives.

@@GGysaryeah I don’t. Shoes come off when the day is done. But I’m also always “inside”. Inside my garage to inside my truck to the front of my work where I walk 15 feet to be inside my work building and then reverse back home. It’s also a very dry climate so mud is foreign to my shoes. You are, however, expected to keep your shoes outside if they get wet, muddy, or what have you.

@@GGysar I'm not Asian, but I'm an American that does take his shoes off inside. Honestly, I just do it because it is more comfortable and seems to make more sense to me. I can always slip them right back on if I need to leave so it isn't like there is a reason to keep them on.

The difference is that Matt & Trey are careful to follow the rules of good storytelling. Each episode of South Park sets out to tell a coherently structured story that is interesting. The comedy emerges from within the narrative and is caused by the story itself. So, for example, Cartman doesn't just suddenly out of the blue say, "I think I'll dress like Hitler," because that's shocking. No, he instead first watches a movie. The movie makes him feel a certain way that then causes him to say things that adults find uncomfortable. So an adult shows him a video of Hitler in an attempt to explain why he shouldn't be saying these things. The video has the opposite affect though. Cartman now has a historical figure that he can match to the way he feels, and so he decides to dress and speak like his newly discovered hero. It's shocking, but it's shock that has a structured cause behind it. If Cartman were a character in Family Guy though, or in one of these miriad number of bad SP clones, then the story would just be that he woke up one day wanting to dress and talk like Hitler. No reason. Just because. Just because that would shocking. Hardy-har.

Counter argument: some shows didn't fail because they were South Park "clones" but because people wanted them to be South Park. I actually really enjoyed Drawn Together they did their own thing. Them bringing up South Park wasn't admitting they were a South Park clone but just commenting that South Park was the king of adult humor and everything else flops because they aren't South Park. It's like the always being compared to someone much better [insert joke about Asian parents always comparing their child to their unrealistically successful cousin].

Hey Nux, if you wanna see a show that's fuckin bonkers, consider Batwoman. A villain of the week decides her signature weapon is painting little clay birds with explosive ink and Yeeting them at people. The episode involves Batwoman precision bataranging a rigged-to-explode pearl from a little girl's hand. I would also suggest Once Upon A Time, a show by the creators of Lost that takes fairytales like Rumplestiltskin and spins them into wild new directions. The writing for that one's legitimately good, most of the time, and even made a sequel plotline for Frozen that's better than the actual Frozen 2???

It's probably still prohibitively expensive to do vtubers for the cast for a new show specifically. Average model costing between 1k-15k is a big investment for new ip. Southparks budget for one episode could easily do it for a full casts worth of models, though.

I would say Drawn Together started as a parody of survival shows. Like Total Drama Island but capital X EXPLICIT. I think Nux would get a big kick out of watching Drawn Together. Also, the premise was pretty solid: The characters are archetypes of different media, such as old timey toon, Hanna Barbera knockoff, 90's superhero show, anime, video game character, Disney character and Newgrounds toon. Kinda makes you wonder what characters would there be if it was rebooted today. Probably would have Vtubers and ugly western cartoon characters...

I remember listening to a podcast made by some lesser known TV show makers, and they were trying to get a production going which was pitched just as "4 Dads trying to save their sons in a world beyond earth" and the people that were being pitched to literally asked if they can't have that goal until season 2 and that the dads sons don't get any mention in season 1. They literally just wanted to make the first season of a show with a daring concept into family guy mixed with king of the hill because then it would just be 4 dad's hanging out.

"While the world of animated shows has always had its share of imitators, I find it fascinating how these so-called 'South Park clones' signal a larger trend in animation that can sometimes feel unhinged. What I appreciate about South Park is its fearless approach to taboo subjects, blending humor and satire to provoke thought and discussion. However, many clones seem to miss the mark completely, opting instead for shock value over substance. Take, for instance, their art and character design-often lacking the distinctive flair that Trey Parker and Matt Stone brought to life. Instead of building on the foundation laid by South Park, these shows reduce the experience to crude jokes and repetitive shock tactics. It's a missed opportunity to engage audiences with clever writing and genuine social commentary. Additionally, the essence of South Park's humor lies in its intelligent critique of contemporary issues, pushing boundaries while maintaining a sense of humanity beneath its outrageous exterior. Clones, unfortunately, often strip away that layer, leaving us with hollow laughter and a bitter aftertaste. In conclusion, while imitation can indeed be a form of flattery, we must be cautious of the 'unhinged' takes that prioritize mere provocation over meaningful dialogue. As fans of animated satire, we should advocate for art that inspires us to think critically rather than simply laugh at the chaos. Here’s hoping for more originality and substance in future animated series that offer the same bold social commentary without losing sight of the heart of the narrative!"
