This is a fun video and something I can definitely relate to as someone who loves to dabble in stocks and options. The only thing I would like to see you look at more with this example is to take into account the taxes paid on the sell of those stocks. Short term capital gains can be ugly and even long term gains can add up on larger investments. Great to see you putting out videos again. Love and respect to you 🤘

You have take off 15% in marketplace fees to sell the comics. You can sell the Starbucks stock with no fees. You should take 15% off your comic book numbers. And your time to list and ship each comic. The stock you can sell with one click. But the comics are way more fun. Awesome video

You’re assuming I’m selling the comics on eBay or only using PayPal. There are many ways to get around fees these days. But, yes, there is a chance that you will be hit with fees. But when you sell stock, you also have to pay taxes, which are usually higher than 15%, so it basically evens out if you look at it like that.

@@JernosComicsPopCulture wait you can sell comics for no fees and still get the full Fair Market Value for them. Tell me how. You have to pay taxes on the comic sales also

@@lag9 You do not need to report comic sales as taxable income unless it's a large amount. Even I, who files taxes under my own business (Jerno's Comics), don't report all of my comic sales unless it equals a certain amount on each marketplace, app, etc. or you are issued a 1099 from that marketplace/venue. Also, if you do report comic sales, you can practically write everything off that you buy, which cancels out anything they would take for taxes. You can write off your phone, your internet, your computer, even your clothes because they are essentially "work clothes" if you are selling something in them. As far as no fees: Selling comics in person, Facebook marketplace, Craigslist, Instagram, and KZbin. Through these platforms, I can accept cash, or payment throgh Zelle or Venmo, with zero fees. Also, if I am selling on a marketplace or using a payment method (like PayPal) that does charge fees, I will include the fee amount in the shipping, as long as it's not a super high dollar book.

@@JernosComicsPopCulture that is absolutely false! You have to pay taxes on any gains! Did you also make money when you sold your starbucks stock? If so you owe capital gains tax. I hope you are not audited.

As long as you are smart about it and make educated decisions. Like I said, not all comics are "investments," but if you do it right, you can make it work.

@@JernosComicsPopCulture exactly.. 💯.. I bought asm 252 and secret wars 8. I paid 150 and 100 for the 252 newsie. Super crispy. A press would make them both 9.6 9.8 candidates. Ps pressing u helped me to learn. My biggest keys to date aside from uf4. I always hear your voice saying props or flop before I buy now lol

One thing I see that was not discussed was the amount of tax $ spent when you sold your sticks I'm guessing 25% then you have the sales tax and shipping if there was any on the purchase of the books unless that's included? And of course when you go to sell them you have any sellers fees associated with that as well. But I do wanna say I love your videos and advice I have been watching you for a good amount of years now and I'm always impressed with your thorough detailed videos where you show all sides of all aspects as well as give your opinions and also play devil's advocate along the way. Thanx 🙏

I disagree. It's easy to look at the numbers. Unfortunately, some comics sit unsold. Plus, you have the time (time is money). Plus materials and fees. Have to find a buyer. I would rather press a button and get my money right away.

This is a good point regarding perspective and what’s worth it for you, but it doesn’t take away from the monetary value. We are dealing also with keys that move decently well and are very liquid, but yeah, it doesn’t mean you’ll sell in one day. And again, this is a small comparison. If we’re talking macro level, investing in stocks is much more viable than comics, period.

@@JernosComicsPopCulture It's only on paper, though. Maybe you'll sell it for less to sell it. Maybe it sits for 6 months. Time is money. If you make $25 an hour, let's say at your job, and you're spending over 2 hours to make $50 on a book. It's better to just go to work and press a button to sell the Starbucks stock. I would rather get that guaranteed quick money. Work smarter, not harder. I can possibly even take the profits quicker and make more money. There's a lot of unsold keys on Ebay.

These are assumed ROI percentages, right? Because you haven't actually sold the books? **EDIT** It helps to watch the whole video before making comments. ;)

I invested in faang stocks, but when the pandemic came around and everyone was bullish I pulled out. Those weren't signs of a healthy market. Just like what happened to the comic market. The trick is knowing what your doing, because not all the comic market was irregular. In my opinion golden age books weren't effected like the rest of the market so I put my investment money in to that, and I have not regretted it since. Plus I can hold and admire my investment now which is a plus

@@JernosComicsPopCulture yes there is also a lot of solid silver age investments specially Spider-Man, that man could hold the whole silver age market on his shoulders with the proportionate strength of a spider
