I went from a standalone waste bin (with lid) to a no-lid bin under my sink on a drawer that has the auto opener from ikea attached. It's PERFECT. The two things I worried about - no lid, and smaller bin - are actually total non issues and even a pro in some ways - having a smaller bin means the trash gets emptied more frequently, and the bag never gets overstuffed, like it did in the old bin. The lid is a non issue, as it's enclosed (would never have an open bin in the open kitchen, though.) I also have a small compost bin in the same unit. It's fantastic, I can stand at the sink with trash at my left and DW on me right and it's incredibly efficient, and the touch open is great when your hands are full, just hip check or use a knee to open the drawer.

I have a trash drawer (looks like a cabinet, but pulls out like a drawer) to the left of my sink. It holds 2 x 13 gal trash bins - 1 for trash, 1 for recycling. It was one of the ‘must haves’ for my kitchen renovation.

@@barbaraeaton9266 part of the cabinets. Brand is Waypoint. Most kitchen cabinet manufacturers make them.

I rented a house once which had a trash compactor. It didn’t compact, but it opened with the foot pedal just fine. I lined it and used it quite happily for years.

Me and 2 teens barely go thru 1 bag per week (13 gal) and I checked my kitchen bin... i trash tea bags, egg shells, paper towels, orange peals, apple cores, veggie scraps and plastic wrappers (cereal bags, candy, snacks, etc). Everything else is recycled 😅in a paper bag and goes to garage every few days. I cook meats, veggies and we eat fruit everyday so leftovers are awesome. I do want a trash compactor some day ❤

We also compost anything that can be. Trash is small.

The options you presented for garbage and recycling management were numerous and the space they take in a kitchen layout is priceless real estate. Our town's separation requirements led us to wanting four bins - household garbage, plastics, glass and finally cans mixed with paper. We found trade-offs had to be made.(in our desire to presort) We were losing valuable kitchen storage space.and did not have a mudroom option. We have designed next to the sink two bins - household and mixing cans and glass, as they need the most rinsing. The bin for plastics is located in the island across from the fridge. That leaves paper which still needs a home. Turned out to be an unexpected challenge. Good topic Mark!

Thanks for the input! Soon we'll need separate garbage sorting rooms in our homes to deal with all this stuff. You're absolutely right about "priceless real estate". It's difficult to balance.

I have had a trash compactor. Loved it. Didn’t care about the actual compacting but it sealed smells away. No vermin.

A lot of garbage disposals are designed to just plug in to an inside cabinet outlet. Easy to install and swap out when changing.

I remember seeing the trash compactor as far back as 'The Jetsons' 😀 and 'The Flintstones'

This is the biggest problem in my current kitchen- we moved last spring to avoid a remodel only to realize we still need a mini remodel to improve the accessibility and usability of our kitchen. l with this and am so glad I found this podcast!

Trash compactors are way older than Star Wars. I keep paper recycling in my foyer in a baby wardrobe (dish pans in drawers hold paper and cardboard/box board, paper shredder behind door of hanging space for anything with personal info that needs to be shredded). It sits just inside my front door and the mailbox is just outside my front door, so super convenient. Glass, plastic and metal recycling is in back room off the kitchen since that’s where most of it is generated.

I have a covered, foot pedal open, trash can in my kitchen. It is at the end of a counter, near the garage door. You cannot see it from most of the kitchen, but it is right near the work triangle. We do not separate trash and organic materials here where I live. Recyclables get rinsed well and put in a recycling toter in garage right outside the kitchen door in the cold weather, and a smaller bin in the garage to be taken out to the toter that is placed outside in the warm weather. Garbage toter is outside, near the garage door, year round.

Mark I don't know if you have control of this but there were at least 10-15 ads for this Saturday video. I'm thinking of building a drawer for a trash pull out.

I put cooked food or non-compstable food waste down the garbage disposal. Compostable food waste and coffee grounds, etc goes in a compost bin under the sink. Recyclable paper, plastic, glass, etc goes in a reusable large bag that sits on the back screen porch. Then there is a standalone foot petal trash bin that sits in the kitchen. I always felt that cabinet cans do not fit conventional sized kitchen bags. They also steal valuable cabinet space. I've never had enough cabinet space to justify dedicating space to a trash can.

I'm designing a kitchen for a new home and the trash is a big deal for me. Currently I have a pullout for trash and recycling and have a counter mounted (drop-in) bin with a rubber gasket for compost in a blind corner. (How about that use of a blind corner, Mark?!) I love it, but it isn't close to my prep space.

I don’t like a lid on the under cabinet trash pull out. It’s just easier to toss trash that way and it’s emptied often enough so there isn’t a smell issue. If it was out it the open then I’d probably have one with a swing top lid.

An interesting kitchen detail I just saw on a Canadian House and Home Episode - Inside a Tailored Condo Filled With Whimsical Art and Bold Pops of Color" - at minute 4:00 you get a glimpse of the base cabinet toe-kicks where they used the same stone as on the backsplash. If that were lit with under-cabinet LED strip lights it would look amazing.
