@20:50 soy brasileno, y en portugués, ropa se dice roupa y tiene el mismo significado del espanol. De verdad, nunca ví "Ropa" con el significado dicho en el vídeo, aquí que dice "corda"

English borrowed a great percentage of its vocabulary from French as prestige borrowings, thus, although it is a Germanic language it has a large percentage of Latin based vocabulary through French borrowings. This is why we have duplicates such as graveyard and cemetery.

Prestige borrowings is a rather delicate way of saying that the French conquered England in 1066 and that the language the rulers spoke was French. The language that those who control the society is always the "prestige" language. Another major source of Latinate words in the English language is that new words needed to be coined in English during the Enlightenment because of the expansion of knowledge, and educated people (who were the ones needing to coin the new words) knew Latin and turned to Latin to create the new words.

@@MC-vb7kh Sensible has changed its meaning in english. Now it means having good sense. It used to mean sensitive, as in Jane Austen's book title Sense and Sensibility

Yaaaaay!! I'm so happy you mentioned Romanian! Si le pides a alguien que te diga cuales son los idiomas latinos, nadie piensa en rumano pero siiiii, es un idioma romance y es bastante cercano al espanol! Es mas, es cierto lo que dicen sobre la ventaja de empezar a aprender un idioma romance desde otro idioma romance, que puede ser un arma de dos filos - a veces las palabritas son TAN cercanas que me confundo y, cuando me pongo a hablarle a alguien en rumano, me salen palabras en espanol y al revés. Y como canadiense que soy (ahi naci y me crie) es obligatorio tomar clases de frances desde los grados 6 a 9, así que a veces mezclo los tres idiomas y no me sale ninguno bien haha - similar a lo que dijo David sobre su experiencia despues de tomar clases de frances y aleman! Por ejemplo - Rumano - iarba verde; pantaloni negri; vad biblioteca; economia era total diferită Espanol - yerba verde; pantalones negros; veo la biblioteca; la economía era completamente diferente ... la similitud es divertida, aunque a veces sea dificil de separar :) gracias por otro episodio fantástico!

Muy interesante. Mi esposa y yo aprendemos espanol desde unos anos y con frecuencia cuando no conocemos una palabra espanol, tratamos la palabra frances con una prononciacion espanol o cambiamos la terminacion por un O o un A y es bueno. 🙂 A proposito de "sensible", en frances, "sensible" puede tener el mismo significado que en espanol. Una persona sensible (en frances) puede significar una persona que siente emociones facilmente tambien. Por ejemplo, une persona sensible podria llorar facilmente si alguien gritale.

Una palabra con que me equivocé mucho cuando empecé a aprender español fue “sopa” porque suena como “soap” en inglés. Todavía tengo que pensar antes de decir o preguntar algo sobre jabón 😅

Aprendí de ustedes que “similaridad”, no exist. Es “similitud”. Me he enterado que la palabra, “elaborar” es diferente en inglés. En inglés ‘elaborate’ es expandir ideas y explorarlas profundamente. En español es hacer cerveza. ¿Verdad?

Spanish and Portuguese are much more similar in every way to each other (despite the multitide of differences) than Mandarin Chinese is to Cantonese, yet they're both Chinese. Let that sink in. Hell, they're probably more similar than Mandarin and Shanhainese.
