@MasterIceyy11 ай бұрын
The thing is the 40k setting is so large and expansive that it can literally serve as the backdrop for anything, you could even make slapstick comedy or a romance novel in the 40k setting. I don't really think everything needs to be grim dark and edgy for it to have a place in the 40k universe. You need light in order to have darkness.
@theshamurai3211 ай бұрын
I think it's honestly hard to define 40k at large as one genre because it contains such a variety of them in different media interpretation. Like the Watcher novel was straight up, actual existential horror, then Ciaphus Caine's novels are more like a military farce parody, then you have Gaunt's Ghosts that takes it to more of a gritty, espionage/guerilla action environment, Horus Heresy reads like borderline biblical epics, and then Eisenhorn (from what I understand, haven't cracked that open yet) is a political intrigue detective series. All of those books are still about just the Imperium with a variety of tones. This isn't to say that variety is bad, I think it's one of 40k's strengths that there's something for almost anyone in this universe. It does make it hard to pin down what 40k as a whole falls into, though. Not to be contrarian, but personally, closest genre I'd describe it as in a phrase is "Gothic Scifi."

6:35 in the book "Dante" it's explained that the Blood Angels' practice of artistry and beauty is to help hone their focus and concentration, so they can more strongly resist the Red Thirst and Black Rage- new recruits spend a year practising arts and crafts before they even start combat training. I hope Mortifactors get a mention, they're my favorite of all the creepy chapters, while also being just wholesome in their own quirky ritualistic way. Loved reading about them in Warriors of Ultramar. Their audiodrama "Taker of Heads" is fantastic too. They also had a chapter in the "Successors" anthology. They're what I'd describe as Kroot but Space Marines.
@foolfooly355311 ай бұрын
Oddly enough, Mortifactors are also probably one of the more 'progressive' Astartes chapters in terms of adhering to the Imperial faith. The Angels Resplendent are also part of The Dark Coil series of books by Peter Fehervari (my personal favourite Black Library author). His novel The Reverie has them as main characters, and is primarily set on their home planet of Malpertius, pre them turning into the Angels Repentant. The colour scheme however is different, being a darker shade of blue in those books. with the left pauldron fully artistically personalized by each Marine. Highly recommend picking up this book!
@LurkMoar10111 ай бұрын
I loved this Sudgie. While people like Bricky and Luetin (both personal favourites) delve deeply into the 'main' lore, it is you that has brought my attention to the lesser, even more unknown, details that I have somehow missed since starting in '87. And to add to that fact, I still have my original Rogue Trader rulebook and look back fondly at that drawing of a Rainbow Warrior getting shot by a Sister, and it's only just this moment it dawned on me that it was an early Sister Of Battle. Unbelievable. Thank you.
@cullenkerr655611 ай бұрын
If you want to learn more about the Angels Resplendent, the Undying Martyr and how they all fit together I can’t recommend Peter Fehervari’s work enough. The books Fire Caste and the Reverie and the short story The Crown of Thorns all have subtexts that weave together and let you piece the mystery together. It’s probably some of the most engaging fiction Black Library has right now
@PavelThorsonos11 ай бұрын
While I wholeheartedly recommend checking out all of Fehervaris work (he is by far my favourite 40k author), I do feel the Reverie is by itself enough to piece it together ;)
@cullenkerr655611 ай бұрын
@@PavelThorsonos Eh. The Reverie sets up why the Resplendent would be willing to listen to the undying martyr. Fire Caste and the Crown of Thorns let you figure out who the martyr actually is and how he got to Canvolis. But you’re right this is an undisguised attempt to get the Arkan more exposure. My favorite subplot in the dark coil is the Arkan inadvertently getting payback on the Resplendent. The fact that the boys in gray had no idea that yeeting the creepy preacher into a swamp brought about the total ruination of everything the chapter that helped conquer their homeworld stood for is hilarious

Just because those books exist doesn’t mean we don’t still get the disturbing, shockingly horrifying “adult” content that we have always known and loved! Exceptionally dark loyalist chapters are my bread and butter for favorite 40K lore. I wrote a short story about the Carcharodons attacking a remote Imperium outpost gone rogue, and I did my best to make it feel like Jason Vorhees hunting these mortal planetary defenders, because I imagine that’s what it would feel like!

Exorcists were the whole reason I started collecting and painting. I think at that point the rumor was that they were the only Grey Knight successor chapter, so I decked a lot of my guys out with halberds and the grey knight pauldrons. Imperial fists are cool lineage too, but I'll always love my semi Grey bois. Also love the horror vibes. 40k horror sneaks up on a person so good.

I really enjoyed this! Delving into the obscure nooks of the 40K universe is a lot of fun. I was going to argue that the video doesn't really support the thesis, because I took your thesis to be "GW isn't actually trying to make the major Space Marine chapters feel more like "good guys" that a mass market audience can support." But after looking at your opening more closely, I realise now that your thesis is actually "being a Loyalist doesn't mean you're a good person." And the video certainly supports that. The early reference to folks talking about how 40K is trying to change the Ultramarines and Salamanders into actual good guys is slightly distracting, then, but taken as a whole, the underlying argument of this video is sound. And I feel that from an A/V technical perspective, this shows a steady improvement in your skills as a KZbinr. So, allow me to conclude be saying that this video shows you're doing pretty good at your job! (I hope that comes accross as the compliment it's meant to be.)

Ok, holup, you just taught me about the Dark Krakens and they and their planet sound A W E S O M E. I'm definitely into the idea of a full video! Also this channel is fun as hell, Subscribed 🙏

This was awesome. I'm saving a set of Deathwatch models just to be able to paint all sorts of interesting chapters. I was already planning to do a Lamenter and a Rainbow Warrior, but the Dark Krakens I didn't know about!

You should definitely make lore videos about each of the factions! :)

After seeing videos presenting the Dark Krakens as the least suspicious of the Salamander successors I was surprised to see them here. Not complaining though, I think they're awesome and love to see content about them. Great Video!

YES to a Dark Krakens video, please! This is the reason the lore of 40k is so appealing (at least to me) - the dark side! As always, great video!
