The biggest expense is getting it engineered to act as the full scale counterpart. Not the hull, propulsion or "bullshit" instruments. If you don't need extreme realism you can probably put one together in your garage for a few thousand.

I know this looks like playing around, but I think this is cool. I was just on a Viking river cruise from Nuremberg to Budapest and had no idea how many really narrow locks they go through and traffic they encounter. Starting basic training with this is a good thing, even if weight factors are not in play.

I do rememeber, when we were at simulator and teacher simulated Bosphorus. An then he left us annatended. And ten ships ran full ahead in order to competite each other crossing the bridge. That was fun!

The money involved in international shipping allows this sort of funtime for adults. In the old days you learned on the job over years. I bet no one below ships captain gets to play there . though.. Good on em for having the ability to do this. If all this is supposed to be to scale that rolling ship would kill its crew in minutes.

Would it help teach these guys better if they were looking through special lenses that made it look like they were looking at a longer ship & not just sitting in a tiny toy boat? & put a box around their head so they couldn't just swing their head around for a 360-degree view. Give them little convex mirrors if they want to see behind them.

In science there is an area called dimensional analysis dealing with units and could be very useful in this field. The inertia of ships and planes changes and if floated or flying one needs to be very careful as their behaviour could not be so related. Take for example a fly, a humming bird, an eagle and an Jumbo A380 or a Boeing 747. As they use the same medium for operation one would not expect that they would use an equivalent flying manner. As the size changes while the medium remains the same, they the flight dynamics could change too and hence this is the reason for the different shape and the rate of change of movements in their wings. A house fly would never fly with fixed wings and we would be able to see it!! Nor a humming bird hovers as it does with fixed wings, Nature in its wisdom saw to the right solution. Incidentally , some say that a magnetic motor cannot be made smaller that a certain size as it would not behave as a large one as magnetism come in DOMAINS of a certain size. The same with this ships of this size floating in the same density water as the larger counterpart, It the small ship had to have the same time response and speed response, then the water had to be changed into a medium of higher density. I used to work such problems about 70 years ago when I worked on ships and attended the Royal Naval Dockyard School. When I attended the University of Newcastle upon Tyne many years ago, I often went to Exhibition Park (Town Moor) to "play about" on the Turbina the world's first turbine ship and also I played with the same rubber band powered boats as used by Parsons and other to study propellers and stepped hulls. NIce memories of my younger days.

@Current Batches Water density, and viscosity. In order for the ships, as models to behave in scale, the water needs to be denser/thicker. I'm sure he's speaking from a modeling POV, in relation to studying scale ship reactions in scaled medium.

I'm a very strange captain then. 😉. I'm captain on a chemical tanker and don't need a pilot for manouevring. But you're correct many captains have no idea in how to handle their own vessel. According the many pilots a speak in a week on average 3 ports a week.
