The "Söhne Mannheims" song sounds like Xavier Naidoo because it is him. He joined that band for a while. He also later formed a duo with Cool Savas called "Xavas" (Xavier + Savas). And in both cases he was the lead singer because he got an amazing voice.

"German music" is rather unprecise here. When I was young songs sung in another language than German wouldn't have been called "German". But that changed obviously. Also producers hired singers from everywhere in the world and produced music with them. They could have done the same in another country. Is it "German" because it was produced by a German producer? What if he acquird the US citizenship and gave up his German citizenship? Does it matter if this German producer produced the song in Germany or outside? Or whether his company registered in Germany or outside? Does it matter if the singers were foreigners or acquired the German citizenship? Or were native Germans? And so on! Music business in most western countries is strongly internationalized.

5:57 Herbert Grönemeyer was probably the biggest german musician back then. He could sale out stadiums with over 70.000 people. He also was the first non-english-singing-musician who got offered an unplugged-concert by MTV. The song in the link i posted is for his passed wife and has arguably the most beautiful lyrics in the history of german music. Xavier Naidoo, you asked for it, you'll get it: I don't care what terrible person he is, to me he always had a terrible voice. There was a summer you couldn't avoid him on the radio, and he did me a favor to get himself banned. 2004, "Die perfekte Welle" ("the perfect wave") was a great hit and I liked it. But on Dec26 that year, a tsunami hit Sri Lanka (and many other countries) with devastating effects, and as Sri Lanka is a tourist destination for Germans especially in Christmas season, the song was immediately banned and never heard of again. 2005, Schnappi the little crocodile. Originally sung by a child and meant as a children's song, it stormed the charts, and I think I remember even a hard rock version of it. "schnappen" means to bite or to grab, so that ambiguous meaning was an invitation to some dirty jokes. 2006, Texas Lightning was a German band with an American singer. It originated from a German comedy show, and the producer (Stefan Raab) said, well, why not, let's make a record. They sold over 100,000 copies. To sum it all up, these were wild years, and this was a wild ride through all music genres. I'm German and I could remember some songs when I heard them, and I also remembered some band names (like Rosenstolz) whose songs I didn't like very much, but there were many songs I never heard or saw the video. Nope, these are not the music charts from Germany. In that Video the creator collected the best songs from German, Austrian and Swiss artists from 2000 to 2009. I remember for example that Polarkreis 18 with their song "Allein, Allein" wasn't even in the top 10 of the year 2008, but in this video they are on 5.
