These Mushrooms Put Me in the ER

Avoid doing this when growing your own mushrooms at home!
I learned a very painful lesson, but in the end we were able to collect beautiful pink & blue oyster mushrooms along with our first taste of wine caps (aka garden giants). Watch to see how we turned some old bed frames and some straw into tasty ingredients for the table.

Beautiful mushrooms! I have to say that you handled the whole nail in the foot situation very calmly, and I loved how your forager’s eye quickly saw a handy solution for the bleeding. Sorry though you got injured and hope you’re healing up and enjoying your beautiful mushroom crop.

They are beautiful, aren’t they? Not an experience I’d recommend but my foot is healed now and yarrow does seem pretty effective at stopping bleeding.

Haha, yeah that was unexpected! All healed up now and enjoying the tasty rewards. I joke that my "blood, sweat & tears" made for a better harvest. ;)

Personally I always encourage puncture wounds to bleed: to help carry any debris or germs out with the blood. It is cool to know how to use yarrow when bleeding is excessive . I watched your oyster mushroom beds with interest. In SWWa I harvest the naturally occurring pale & darker tan oysters that only grow on dead Alder trees. I actually leave small dead Alders in my woods to grow these fungi. Sweet that there are oysters that will grow in beds. Good to know.

True, bleeding might have some benefits too. I’d like to find more wild oysters myself. Found my first tiny clump this summer. :)

So it wasn't directly mushrooms that sent you to the ER, but the nail puncture? It was confusing to me at first but wanted to clarify. I'm very afraid to try any mushrooms, even ones I could grow. With my luck the ones that sprouted wouldn't be the ones I planted or were safe to eat!

Yes, it was the nail puncture that I had to go to the ER for. The mushrooms were not a problem and grew well and quite easily. I would recommend the pink oysters because of their very bright color but the wine caps are also quite distinct. I understand your hesitancy but you'll do well I'm sure!
