The train over the water hits the same fear that most Thalassophobia scenarios do for me. Mostly because this is a night video so the water is dark and I can't SEE where it is so my mind thinks at any moment the track is going to disappear and we'll plunge into the dark depths. *shudders* I had to ride in a car over a huge reservoir in a similar fashion late at night a few years back. There was no storm, though, so I couldn't see where the land began and the water ended. I just had to spend like 20 minutes panicking until I saw a house. LOL I hate driving over reservoirs, but driving over them during the night or a bad storm is just the WORST.
@-tera-33453 ай бұрын
For me, that video hits the same primal fear in me that thinking about atolls does. All around you is nothing but water for as far as the eye can see, and the train tracks are only a foot or so above it. So if the water gets rough and some big waves start coming, there's nowhere to go. Though I suppose that since the tracks are running on an embankment, that water may not be that deep, but even so. You can't really tell that when all you can see is the surface.

What a nice way to spend my evening watching this scary thang. By the way as someone born in a city on the shore of the Caspian sea, turns out it really is a lake technically, so you're questioning the right thing Greg 😁. Although about 5.5 million years ago it was part of the Tethys Ocean and got landlocked as a result of tectonic uplift and sea-level fall. I guess it matters that it kept a lot of sea-like properties, like water salinity (even though it is around 3x less salty than the oceans) or the fact that it is part of the oceanic crust and not the continental crust and so on. So I guess in a way because of its history and just the sheer size of that thing, it somehow deserves to be called a sea. Aaaaand that's the end of my Ted talk. Thanks for the video Greg!

I think you'll really enjoy the Alaska cruise! Super rough weather like that is very uncommon, usually rough weather just amounts to some extra roll. Cruise ships are big enough that the rolling motion is slower than you would think and it's not like the ship is wildly tossing around. If you hear booming sounds it's just waves striking the hull, completely safe, just noisy. I always feel like I'm being rocked to sleep during rougher weather.

I went Great White cage diving off Isle of Guadalupe in 2019. On day two of diving I found myself alone in the cage for several hours (majority of others scrubbed their dives that day due to weather conditions). Whilst below, one particular shark took interest in me; circling many times, dissolving into the void only to reemerge in an unexpected location. I felt secure in the cage even though a 6m, 2000kg predator loomed just outside. At one point I had lost track of the shark for several minutes, only to have it come at me from below, jaws agape, veering away from me and the cage at last second. I doubt I will ever experience such terror again. I was left awestruck by the silence of such a massive creature.
