I love pastel pencils a lot more than I thought I would too! I didn't think I would like them because I don't care for the mess that comes with using just regular pastel sticks. But these pencils are great! This brand is a bit soft, so I bought a few faber castell pitt pastel pencils to help with detail (they're slightly harder pastels than these)

When i was into pastels i saw lots of artists who drew animals with fur in realistic manner in this medium. Pastel pencils are as soft as pastels and precise as colored pencils. No wonder this might be the perfect medium for you. Would love to see your works with this technique.

Use a knife to remove the wood and then sandpaper to make the point. :) If you want to use the sharpener, buy a cheap graphite pencil and sharpen that between the pastels. That cleans the blade for pastel dust.

Xargot Hunter. I agree, I started using this method for all pencil's (pastel, colored, watercolor) and found it's the best way. Plus you maintain the strength and use more of the pencil material.

I have been working in pastel for many years and it is probably my favorite medium. The Derwent Super Point Manual Helical sharpener gives a wonderful long point on their Carb-Othello pencils with no breakage. It's a crank-style sharpener. Run a graphite pencil through it occasionally and you will love the results.
@drivers77265 жыл бұрын
Kirsty , have you tried using the Carb Othello with a water brush yet? My set is old, but the inside lid of the tin says Aquarelle. So I tried using a damp, barely wet paintbrush. Not quite the same as watercolor pencils, but it did create a nice wash. Oh, and adding just a small amount of water, "fixes" the area - no smudging. Try it, see if it works with newer product? I never thought charcoal or pastels might be water soluable.
@bostonblackie95035 жыл бұрын
You didn't mention they are partial "AQUARELLABLE," that is watercolour. Very important that people know all the advantages of the tool they are using! Also there are less expensive brands of pastel paper, for beginners, an option. I would love to see you do a video using these pencils as watercolour and see how they come out!

I used pastels when I was younger and into high school, I remember doing layers of colors then using a pointy stick to scratch out designs over the layers which brought through the bottom colors- that was 46 yrs ago- lol!! I've done so many other mediums since then (accept acrylics- to me it's like painting with mayonnaise- yuk!!) But I've been tempted to do pastels again- thank you for your video, you do amazing work! :)
@ernesto19566 жыл бұрын
For sharpening, I recommend the Carl Angel-5 hand crank sharpener. But I also have become adept at using a heavy-duty Stanley utility knife to whittle away the wood portion, and then sandpaper to work the core to a fine point.

As for the sharpening, sometimes its best to use an X-Acto knife to carve away at the wood and tip so you have more control. Thats what I was taught to do, especially for soft mediums like charcoal pencils and pastel pencils.

I know this is old, but my best suggestion for sharpening these or any pastel pencils is either the Mobius and Rupert double-hold breast handheld sharpener, or use a craft knife and cut away the wood and then scrape the pigment on a sandpaper block to create the point you want. You can hold a dish underneath the pencil and use the knife to create the point, thus saving the pigment to be used as powdered pastel, which is what I do. Also when you're using the M&r sharpener, use the big hole first to cut away the wood and then the smaller hole to create your point.

I realize Im late to the coloring trend as Im watching this in October 2020 ( 2 years after this post). I was totally unaware that you could use pastel pencils to color /draw a full picture. I was under the impression they were for detail and/or backgrounds. Ive been only coloring as an adult now for only a short period of time. I never realized just how much the process & tools used & needed have evolved & advanced since coloring as a child. Just figuring out what kind of colored pencils to buy & learning the many techniques at times has been overwhelming to say the least.😀 YT tutorials have been both a Godsend & a huge point of contention for me..😃 Although, without them I probably would have given up a week after starting!! LOL!! However, I have also felt intimidated & very frusterated at my own lack of ability & length of time it has taken to learn certain things. All things considered, Im so grateful for ALL these emotions as it has opened me up to abilities I never knew I had & Ive been able to create my own masterpieces that Im actually proud of. I cannot thank you enough for sharing your time, talent & creativity with me. It has not only made a difference in how I color now, but has given me the necessary confidence to pursue other mediums as well. The possibilities are truly endless!! Just wanted you to know that your time & effort spent producing videos for your channel has made a huge difference in someone else's artistic journey. Again, many thanks!!💜💜💜

Excellent review on the pastel pencils! The effect looks gorgeous! I have tried pastel pencils in the past. Loved how they blended. Also working dark to light. However, as you discovered, sharpening them is drama. Crumbs and breakage, as I sharpened the pastel pencils, had me cursing. I did love how beautiful the resulting art work looked. The range of colors was nice too. Your set had even more colors. Kirsty, I love your art supply reviews. Love even more when you do a speedpaint, experimenting with your art, as you comment about your work. Like your zodiac piece back in the summer. Also, the experimental stone-like portrait. I enjoy your commentary on ther art work you're working on but also commentary about all the stuff we artists experience. :)

There is a fairly cheap pencil sharpener that I have found works well with pastel pencils. It's a double sharpener that takes the wood off first and then creates the point in a second sharpener next to it. It's roughly £ 4 depending where you go. These are on Amazon ; DIXON Lyra double hole sharpener - £ 3.49p KUM Long point pencil sharpener - from £ 6.32p uptown £ 8.53p depending on seller chosen. I hope this tip helps somebody as they do make a huge difference when your trying to get a decent point.

Kirsty, so pleased to hear how good these are to work with. Been dying to try them. For sharpeners, I would recommend the M + R brass circular and the T'Gaal adjustable. It looks like a childs toy but because you can adjust the cutting angle, there is far less waste. xoxo

jomaruyart Fixative actuallly darkens the colour of pastels and does not prevent smudging.
@Morticia1477 жыл бұрын
This will only work if you work on pastelpaper. The paper you ususally use for colored pencils is way to smooth, pastels won't stick well. And the pastelpaper might be to rough for colored pencils. And stay away from pastel fixatives they will always darken the colors a lot and also might be ruin the picture.
@gingerbiscuit48717 жыл бұрын
I used a fixative and it completely ruined my artwork! Using Pastel mat paper will remove the need for a fixer as it can take multiple layers and works really great with coloured pencils.
@Tessanna127 жыл бұрын
Flem li yeah, these two mediums (colored pencil and pastel) arent really compatible. I tried lol ... unless you can stand to use a workable fixative. But soft pastel and pastel pencil is a really fun and unique medium to try. It's super fast compared to colored pencil, which can be a nice change of pace.

I recently bought these but most arrived with fractured/splintered shafts and broken leads! Trying to sharpen them has been a nightmare, only way I’ve managed is with a scalpel (my mechanical ones chewed them to bits). I was fed up with them constantly breaking so invested in some Caran D’ache and they’re awesome to use but very expensive. However the Carbothello’s that I have managed to sharpen are ok.
