did my first 2 rep pullup neutral grip(strict full rom) at 85kg bw 21yo male...ya I'm a beginner..but not being able to do a single one at 75kg to 2 rep now. im happy. the things i did was rows. rows rows rows. i think ppl are over emphasizing lat development and always thinking abt lat width and not overall upper back thickness coz this is where the primary focus should be imo. I have now reached pendlay row (back almost horizontal and done from dead stop) with 1sec eccentric 60kg for 6 reps almost strict and i can see my traps and rhomboids responding really well ... that along with a superset of front sq and machine rows(mike isratel style full rom) and rdl (2 plate for 6 reps strict currently) has surely added thickness to my flat back. surely rookie nos but im a beginner with abt 9 months training (i know its a little long but first few months diet was off and sleep was not good and exercise selection was bad)

I've had chest-to-bar pullups as a priority in my programming for the last month or so. They are such a beast of an exercise, even with a shoulder width grip. I'll usually alternate between arched back and hollow body form. Both seem to hit my mid back and lats extremely well when you're getting your clavicle well over the bar. With that said, I can't do massive amounts of reps. Right now sets of 5-6 put me at 1-2 RIR and 5 sets of that 2-3x a week has been leaving me with some pretty sweet DOMS. I've even tried doing triples with 25# just to see how they feel (brutally hard at the moment, will come back to these later). Can't wait to see what happens in a year after emphasizing pullups. I rotate different grip widths and angles in as needed... too many pullups can definitely bother your tendons 😅 I'm working toward wide grip chest-to-bar pullups, but it's gonna be a grind. Thankfully that grind is worth it, completely. 💪

@@EVEN-ls9ic I'd say to stick with it consistently and find a volume that allows you to progress. I've been experimenting with EMOM sets as a way to get more total reps in with keeping a few reps in reserve per set. If you can add a small amount of weight for your pullups that might help as a different stimulus. Back when I couldn't do higher rep sets of pullups, doing lat pulldowns (strictly with little to no torso momentum) or machine work was a good supplement. You can also use those to focus on parts of the range of motion that you're struggling with. Enjoy the journey, it's a worthwhile one. 👍

In my experience, doing wider grip pull ups while keeping your body vertical also are a serious upgrade to getting that cobra back. I always feel them work the upper part of the lat and shoulder region more and I feel like it added a lot to the upper width of my back. I think about the movement as driving my elbows down right into my sides and shooting myself straight up head over bar. I was more wondering if there are any facts in this or that the growth of my back can just be dedicated to a well routine, incorporating (weighted) pull ups and heavy close grip bb rows.

Do you ever try chin-ups/pull-ups with your legs out and/or knees up? I find that they hit the lats in very unique ways. There's an extra stretch of the lats at the bottom range of motion, and the change in the center of gravity causes the muscles to work at a different angle. My lats feel more sore all the way at the bottom from them, especially when done with a neutral grip.
@adamsloane17482 жыл бұрын
I've been doing pull ups that way too, and I also think the forward leg position hits the lats better. It may be because that position prevents you from arching your lower back. Arching the lower back takes the tension off the lats. Alex's ghetto pulldowns with his legs up work from the same principle.

I used to not be crazy about them, but now they're also one of my favorites just because the results are so good

@@AlexLeonidas looking forward to your weighted Calisthenics program sir. I've been using my own to great effect but your NH program was too godly to ignore future programs lol.

This is a very healthy and helpful video. I promise it works, do some every day if you can. Just some will turn to many.

Alex, Curious to know what you think of doing a variation of this using Gymnastics rings set up wider than shoulder width? They require so much stabilization its not even funny. Super hard to cheat and very humbling.

Kindly make a video on how we can get started with these

Greetings from Sweden Alex! My shoulders makes a cracking sound when I do wide grip pullups, or any kind of motion where my arms go over my head with my elbows in a range of 45 to 90 degrees from there normal position. Why is that and what would you suggest me to do about it? Can I work around this problem and still do wide grip pullups? It dosen't hurt but i makes an annoying poping sound and it has been with me ever sins I started lifting. 18 years old 71kg, been lifting for 4 years. Thanks for the all the superb information you give out, MUCH appreciated!

I ain't pulling my ass up for a little bit. *But* I will say, the equivalent super arched wide grip pull down to the chest for me becomes an upper back, rhomboid movement. Going forward I'm thinking about combining them with chest pull rows as well to make an off day where the attention is actually shifted from the mid back portions of the lats, which are well covered on my other pull day. So I think there's some versatility to wide pulls to the chest, and I suspect it applies to pull-ups as well.

Doesn’t wide grip pull-ups work the Teres major not the lats?

Weighted pull-ups/chin-ups are my favorite exercise and I haven’t been able to do them for 2 months because of some random inside elbow pain (probably tennis elbow somehow). Going to see if these take some stress off of them

DONT USE BAR BUT USE RINGS, NO PAIN AS THEY ARE MOVING A LITTLE WITH YOU

Maybe you are ego lifting on pulling movements, straining your forearms. I had a similar problem, dropped the weight, and it disappeared.
@earnyourgold2 жыл бұрын
@@Elitegama2 thank you for the reply, but that’s not the problem. Even on rows with a 30lb KB and light Lat pulldowns it was flaring up. I’ve been rehabbing it and it’s slowing getting better. I didn’t feel any pain with this wide grip though

Forearm extensors are your problem.

Started doing sternum pull-ups with a resistance band and can already feel the difference in my lats vs weighted pull-ups. Pull-ups are good, but I find these to be better for the back.

I'm not strong enough to do even one of these yet, working with a band. Would you consider doing pullups in this angle to make the row redundant? I feel the muscles around my shoulder blades working a lot more with this technique than when I go the "standard" vertical way, and I'm always looking to streamline my training. (As in, I'd rather put all my effort into a few select excercises than dividing it up). Thanks for another great video!
