Even as someone who is mostly hypertrophy focused, I do not understand how so many lifters don’t prioritize getting good at pull-ups. So much more bang for your buck than any other vertical pull. Some variation is always my first or second back exercise. Plus you look cooler when you’re one of the few guys in the gym adding plates to your bodyweight movements 😅
@ernoeskeli1139
@ernoeskeli1139 3 жыл бұрын
Yea exactly. I feel somewhat proud when my bodyweight of 200 lb isn't enough resistance for pull-ups. That's one of the very few exercises where just your own bodyweight is good amount of resistance and on top of that is very easy to do almost anywhere. People don't seem to value that.

I couldn't do a single pull-up in my family, got laughed at that as well. Learned a lot about programming and overall mindset to approach anything in life from Alex, an year later I pulled 90 pounds and that made everything shut up. It shows with enough consistency and proper training one can accomplish a lot. Thank you Alex for teaching us that, and for always breaking the perceived limitations set by people! Alex, I've got to say that you have taught me a lot of things, but one of the most influential in my training has to be to start doing weighted pull ups. I'm currently 16, and a couple months ago I did a 55 lb 1RM on the weighted pull up. Not much, yeah, but a year ago I couldn't do a single one, weighted or not. I'm really thankfull that I started doing them so early in my life, cause now I can't imagine what I'll be doing at 26. At least 3 plates, if not more. Thank you Alex, you are a true inspiration and an priceless piece to this community.

let me tell you, if your using a backpack like I was, you can probably pull way more with a typical dip belt. I was stuck at 70 lb 1rm.. the backpack utilizes your core and accessory muscles way more. so they are better overall with a backpack, but if your after 1rm start using a dip belt

I've found that the two most UNFORGIVING upper body lifts for strength gains are the OHP and the Weighted Chin-up. If your recovery is a little off, you'll not progress. Recovery is everything with these two lifts. Getting adequate sleep and having 3-4 days off in between sessions is ideal, IMHO.

I've recently discovered I can do a single rep at +50 kg, I used to train with max +30 kg, but got to multiple reps. I train full body 5 days a week and undulate the intensity of my lifts (this is mainly to spare my nervous system). What I've noticed is that frequency profoundly affects your ability to handle intensity. The more often you train a movement you more specialised your body and nervous system become at performing that movement and the better you'll get at recruiting the right muscles with appropriate force. Now, I have 2 days where I do +20 kg weighted pull ups for 3x6 (gonna work up to 3x8 before I increase to +25 kg for 3x4) and one day where I ladder up to (now) 50kg (am striving for 70kg after which I'll start training for OAP) and then ladder back down and end with some muscle ups at bodyweight. On the other days I do rows and I try to stay in the 4-6 rep range. So my advice to you would be, train often, like every weekday if you can. Train hard when needed, but go lighter on some days so your CNS can recover properly. Make sure to vary your exercise selection a bit so you can also maximise aesthetic. And try to favour full body training over everything, as this will almost certainly ensure that you're fully recovered the next day.

I train in a similar way. I start with a weight that can get me 8-10 pullups and start increasing from there. When I hit 5 reps per set and know it is the max weight I can pull, I simply restart the program. It added 3kg to my pullups in 6weeks. Slow and steady will get you there injury free.

I started doing weighted pullups in September just before turning 45, started with 16 kg and 6 months later got to pulling 28-32 kg. Granted, I´ve always been a strong pull-up guy so I had a good foundation to build from, but I can confirm everything Alex says, his advice is sound and will provide you with the gains you want. Consistency is the key and never giving up, never skipping a week doing 2-3 times per week. I´m also doing weighted dips and have reached 28 kg there. Full range of motion is the key, and a good progressive overload exercise plan.

This video was absolutely awesome from so many perspectives. I would like to emphasize something, even though most likely all of us are familiar with it: proper warm up. For one-arm-pulls, I used to do classical warming up, which I do for all other workouts. As soon as I started doing some "one-arm lat pull ups" (i.e. without bending the elbow), then trying the movement, it was magically MUCH easier. All the best in your journeys everyone.

I train primarily for rings strength. I've recently achieved an iron cross and a full planche on rings. The two best exercises by far were weighted pull ups and dips. I stagnated for AGES on "progressions". I think weighted pull ups, dips, inverted rows, and push ups will take anyone far. You can do some accessory work like curls, lateral raises, chest flies, etc. But your core should definitely be the weighted basics if you're in to calisthenics. What was your bodyweight when you slapped 180? Since you're well into the 2x club, you should really start looking at the advanced calisthenics skills like iron cross and front lever pull ups. You're more than strong enough. The elbow conditioning for straight arm elements is annoying and can't be rushed, but you're just as relatively strong if not stronger than most of the guys doing crosses and maltese.

@@adeelali8417 Yep. I do two types of dips though. I do weighted bulgarian dips and normal RTO dips. I think the RTO lockout at the top is crucial. I also do my push ups and rows on the rings. And thanks, it took around a year and I started out fairly strong. The programming for straight arm strength is crucial. I was strong enough to hold a cross well before my elbows could actually take it. If you're curious about gymnastics strength, I'd recommend watching Tyson Edwards and Lachlan Walker's Stronger Series. I got a lot of training ideas from them.

I got to 200 lb weighted pronated pull-ups by training them at the beginning of my workouts. I never went over 3 reps except the warm up light weights. Weighted dips helped as well. Using gymnastic rings is good just need to use good form to prevent injury.

You’re reading my mind again past 2 videos. I recently injured my lower back so I have to take a few weeks off from lifting I’ve been doing pull-ups and push-ups since my PT told me they were okay to do. I started doing pull-ups every other day changing the grip each workout so it’s good to know I’m doing something right. I’m going to work up to 5 sets of 10 clean reps with body weight before I delve into weighted, I currently am able to do 3 sets of 8 then only able to do 2 sets of 5-6 after.

Weighted pullups have been my favorite exercise for years. Went from doing them with an in-door pullup bar and a 40lb weight vest, to now in a gym doing 100lbs for a 1 rep max (can almost get 2, but only my eyes clear the bar on the second). My back has exploded ever since I got the 100lbs. Almost annoyed with how fast its growing because I gotta keep buying new shirts lol

I weigh 235 and a power builder - I've simplified my training to primary 2 main accessory and one buffer (biceps or lateral head shoulder) My back exercises will be pendley row and pull ups Starting with 30 reps bodyweight with 60seconds rest until I reach 30 reps then add weight and keep going until I can get 50 reps with a 20kg plate at 45 seconds rest

Cool vide mate, also i think mindset plays big part and when you run into what you think is your limit thats when you have to grind the hardest, i think so because i was stuck at 70 kg weighted pullup for almost a year and i also thought i have reached my limit, and one training session i took 70 kg did a pullup and it felt super easy i went for 80 and did it, 7 days after that i also managed to hit 85 and honestly i think im still far from my limit and im sure in year or two years i will be doing 100+kg pullups

ive been inspired to try weighted pull ups instead of continuing with Lat pulldowns, and holy crap, ive lost my pull up strength. I can barely his a 3x10 bodyweight wide grip pullups. Imagine how much loading potential there is with this exercise. I tried 5lb weighted pullups and i fatigued incredibly fast, got barely 3x8. Imagine how much growth ill accumulate just by achieving a 30lbs for 3x10. Definitly excited to utilize this exercise.

@13:51 "Anything you do in the gym will be peanuts compared to weighted pull-ups." I remember when I got to one plate. Sure, I've seen some chicks (and maybe one guy) do chins with quarters. I remember when I got to three quarters (75 lbs). Pull-ups for endurance suck. But gosh are they easy after doing them weighted. It's like pulling some heavy triples, then deadlifting a plate less. You can RIP it off the floor. (neuromuscular potentiation, etc) Kind of goes for any exercise. Never hurts to get stronger. :)

Good timing! I just hit my rep PR. 12 reps with 30 pounds and been stuck at 10 to 11 reps the last 3 weeks. Constancy and trusting in the process was enough. Gonna build up to 15 reps and move on to the 45 pound plate and build from there. Great video to watch and happy that you go through the struggle as well and never quit!

My man I feel like you're genetically blessed when it comes to weighted pull ups and you should REALLY think about making streetlifting feats your priority. Here in Europe streetlifting and in general the systematic "powerlifting-like" approach to weighted Calisthenics has been increasing and I still haven't seen a person who can do a 80kg pull up with such little focus on it (don't get me wrong, i mean compared to the other guys who train pull ups, dips and muscle ups like the Big 3). When I see you pull up I always come down to the conclusion that you could really be the biggest what if in the pull up game. i BEG you, try to prioritize streetlifting for a year and I'm sure that you can add a full plate in 12 months. Love your work man, keep it up💪💪
