Great video and I love how you actually give a courtesy wave. I’ve ridden for years and every time I’m in my car, stuck in traffic and hear or see a bike lane splitting, I always try to give him or her more room. The further away from a biker I am, the more comfortable I feel. Don’t want any unnecessary collisions or worse yet, any injuries. It’s a big plus when they notice and appreciate that. My major concern now is being rear ended by someone on their phone. Stay safe out there.

Riding tip for you too. Three years ago my buddy had a serious neck injury because during a crash the camera on his helmet got caught in in the trees. His camera was very tightly fixed on his helmet. Although he survived, he still pays the price everyday. On a track day, they only allow cameras on the chest and there is a reason for that. Just saying...

TBH, New rider here. And I honestly do believe in the curtesy wave, but being a new rider, sometime it's hard with everything that is going on to respond to a wave. Only about 2K miles deep, and do recognize that I have not responded to wave, not out of spite or anything, but because I was likely dead focusing on everything going around, clutch, throttle, braking to the light that for my own well being I chose to keep my hands at the wheel. OS don't take it to offensively, if you dont get a wave back. It might be someone like me who is new and focusing on the many things happening.

@MOTO Pilot, I think the courtesy wave is something that you should only attempt when you feel comfortable enough on your bike as well as the given situation. When I first started riding my panigale, I wasn't comfortable with the power yet (especially with only one hand while attempting to bike salute) enough. As well as during lane splits -- I won't give a salute if I feel pinned between two vehicles UNTIL I move over and then wave. At least for me, it isn't disrespect, it's just the situation and trying to be as safe as possible while living in Orange County (horrible traffic). Great video!!
@MrTotesmcgoats3 жыл бұрын
also, do not attempt to wave at Harleys. Only consider waving if they wave...

Good video. In terms of riding position, here in the UK they teach us to ride in the centre of the lane but our roads and the way we get taught are very different to yours across the pond. It's one of my biggest pet hates when someone doesn't thank you, when you purposely gave way to them in places you didn't have to, theres no need for bad manners. Here in the UK, it's a courtesy nod they do rather than a wave, I think it's nice that bikers can be friendly like that, even if they don't know each other. And they also nod their head when thanking you too. Safe riding everyone 🏍️👊

Here's a good tip to save your life: *Don't strap loads of random shit to your helmet because you think it looks cool.* Why compromise the integrity of the one single most important piece of protective equipment? Hey, I'm not one to judge; do what you want, it's your life. But, you should be thinking of your loved ones. They're the ones who are going to be caring for you after you're left in a vegetative state because a GoPro forced its way through your helmet and into your cranium.
@TurtleGP6 жыл бұрын
Damn that helmet is dangerous. I really hope you don't have to learn the hard way why it is so bad to put all that junk on your helmet. If you crash it will catch and twist off every object it touches, twisting and breaking your neck while not allowing the helmet to work the way it was designed to. That is why the start of every new hightech race helmet ad states how the smoothed the outer shell to allow the helmet to easily glance of objects in a collision reducing the impact to your head and neck. A life saving tip for you, you're welcome. I know you young riders care more about looks than function or safety but is it worth being a quadriplegic?

Great tips man! When lane splitting between the carpool lane and lane #1 (or is it #2 with carpool being #1?)...be specially careful towards the end of the ingress/egress sections. I've seen many cagers realize they wanted to get in or out of the carpool lane at the last second and change lanes abruptly without notice. Another situation that almost ruined my day was as follows...I'm splitting lanes between lanes 1 & 2. Car in lane 1, in front of me (traffic is going slower than me) signal he is moving over to an available spot on lane 2. I see him crossing with plenty of time. As he is changing lanes, I slow down just enough to let him move over completely, and I'm timing it so that as soon as his car clears my path, I will be able to accelerate again. The catch was, halfway thru his lane change, a car that was on lane #3 (up until now, it was not on my radar) decides to swoop into the first car's spot. Now all of a sudden, the first car is stuck in between lanes and right in front of me! Luckily, I always ride with one finger on the brake, and was able to shave enough speed to maneuver around him. Since that day, I make sure I am aware not only about the two lanes in front of me, but also, how a third party idiot can cause cars in front of me to become a hazzard. Hope this helps someone stay safe. Ride on!

When commuting in my truck, and a see a bike coming from behind, lane splitting, I move over. I noticed sport bikes, super motos and even dressers give a courtesy wave. Harley dudes never do. Also, when I'm on my bike and a sport bike, super moto or dresser passes from the opposite direction, they give a Bro wave or peace sign. Again, the Harley dudes never do. Do they think they are too cool, or just lack the minimal bike control which would require letting go with one hand? Your thoughts?

Even if i take a single thing from a video; i consider it a good video. It never even crossed my mind that i could suffer longterm hearing damage from riding. Ill be looking into something to combat this.. not sure if ill gel with plugs because i like to really be dialed in on what's going on around me/under me, and the muffled noises seem to me like a delay of information. Most of these things im already constantly scanning for; I have my own techniques and strategies for high-speed lane splitting for example. Almost got ran off the road yesterday doing +200kmh. 100% my technique and line choice for overtaking cars on the hwy saved me. 6" of road left on the shoulder between me and the grass, about same clearance to his car, but i managed to keep it together. Buddy went middle to left without signaling and very abruptly, borderline swerved over as i was going middle to left as well, but shit happens. I want to believe it wasnt intentional and he just didnt realize how fast i was coming up behind him. I never ride in blind spots when overtaking. Ended up riding the shoulder to overtake 3 cars back safely to left, but made it out and gained a massive sense of confidence in my riding abilities. If you wanna ride a bike - whether aggressively like me or defensively. Always need to be calculating what can happen at any given moment and have a backup plan for if it does. I also always look both ways going through intersections. Doesnt mstter if you're going 20 or 260. If someone runs a red at speed limit and t-bones you; that's almost certain death. I also am very polite to fellow motorists that make an effort to give bikes room and acknowledge their presence on the road. I think more people move out of fast lane for me when im on my bike than when im in my car; and that totally rocks to see. Ill give a wave even as i fly by. Not all adrenaline junkies are degenerates. Also like that you incorporated the rain and oils speaking peace as well. Some people dont know that or know how slippery the paint can get. It's fun to go fast, but we all need to make sure we're making it home and riding within our limits and within the conditions 👌✌️

MOTO PILOT It’s called being a noob wanting attention. As far as your lane splitting goes, all it takes is one driver to make a sudden move while you are only inches away from his bumper. Don’t insult my intelligence by trying to convince me it’s a smart safe practice under the conditions I observed you riding in. If all traffic is at a stop, go ahead and split. If you are passing moving traffic at those speeds that close to a moving car with unpredictable distracted drivers, it’s only a matter of time before you have a very bad day. I have been riding for 30 accident free years, I know what I am talking about there Ace. Pilot theme! Lol

I would say have fun, be safe, and don't drop the bike. Get used to the friction zone and throttle control would be the most important but also remember to grip the tank with your knees and not grip onto the handlebars tightly. That will really mess you up around the cones. A few people in my class almost dropped the bike on that because they were holding onto the bike at the handlebars instead of the tank which caused them to twist back on the throttle as they went around the cone.

I actually prefer to ride closer to parallel traffic because I am much more visible to the driver. I had a guy actually not see me and merge into me but because I always anticipate drivers doing that I was able to not only merge to the other side of my lane but also honk at him as he stopped his merge and returned to his lane. This has only happened once to me in the past 2 years therefore I find this strategy better than staying in the further side of the lane where drivers can’t see you coming up in their mirrors. If I am passing traffic to my right, I am in the right center position, if I am passing traffic to my left, I am in the left center position of my lane. Now if I am driving slowly in the right lane and vehicle are passing me off me left than yes I will stick to the right side of my lane.
