Big shoe brands don’t make most of their money on “hype” releases, most of their revenue comes from their GR stuff. While it’s important for their relevance to release Heat sneakers, whether their limited models sell out or not isn’t a good indicator of the company’s financials :)

Sometimes I love how social media has changed the shoe game, but sometimes I hate it. It doesn’t matter if the shoe should have been released 2 o 3 years ago. It is a dope sneaker and the decision from Adidas to revive a silhouette that revolutionized the sneaker game in terms of technology, casual/streetwear and contributed a lot for the actual sneaker “hype”, it’s awesome. I have heard and read a lot of people complaining because the hype for ultra boost or ultra4d’s is dead or that it would be worth consuming if they were released a while ago, it’s just the clear demonstration that many people these days care more about the hype, resell value or the IG/KZbin flex than the actual shoe.

Back in 2018, 4D had no problem selling out. Adidas didn't need to combine the 4D with the UB at that time. They are doing it now because 4D sneakers aren't selling. Nike/JB does the same thing. Everybody wants the AJ1 Chicago's to re-retro, but why bother, when nearly every AJ1 (low, mid and high) are selling out?

They are only selling out because of the resellers. I’m not sure that they would sell out, or sell out as fast without the reseller factor. Many, many people buy the Jordans to put them aside for a few years and then make a few hundred bucks off them, or more.

Just because the ultra boosts were hyped and sold out years ago doesn’t mean the sales and profits from back then were better than they are now. Adidas might just be increasing the supply now which is seeing a larger number of casual buyers purchasing them. Prices for them are higher too in some countries. I do think that the ultra boost 4D would’ve had a lot more hype a few years ago and sold more during its initial release but its not always about short term sales through hype and limited stock. If the life span of the model is extended you could see more sales longer team. But this is just hypothesising, we don’t know the sales/profit of ultra boosts from now compared to a few years ago

I own a few pairs of these, i think I’m more into fashion as a whole than just sneakers, so i just really liked how these looked on the shelf and purchased them with no context etc. got way more compliments than any yeezys or ultra boosts i ever owned, unreal comfort and quirky note but they literally make 0 noise on foot, like none, i cant even explain it but walking on wood there’s literally no noise. Basically hype or no hype i think these are awesome shoes, and its so lame that people need shoes to be 600 dollars resale to think they’re cool

*“Hype” is a very interesting thing.* It’s something that is hit or miss and not really understood. What makes a shoe hype? Why are some shoes that meet the hype qualifications not hype? I feel like once Nike and adidas really go back to the drawing board and think about hype, and work with designers who are more likely to make a hype shoe, then they will succeed. I hate to say it, but the sneaker market IS driven by hype to a degree. People don’t think adidas is hype anymore because they thought they were invincible with boost, and adidas sort of walked blindly into the future. All of Nike’s hype has to do with the Jordan brand and the air max line. Besides a few exceptions, most of Nike’s running shoes aren’t hype. But I guess they are not expected to be, because running shoes are about efficiency, not aesthetics. I sort of feel like “hype” amongst non-performance shoes (Many air max shoes and older Jordans) definitely has to do with the materials used and the look of the shoe and the story behind it as opposed to technology or comfort.

Sorry Seth but Adidas did it right by us true fans. If these released back in 2017/18 these will be snapped up immediately by resellers, and us true fans who have stuck by the brand even now in 2020 empty-handed. I jumped on the app when these released, selected my size, paid, and went on my day. That's how it should be. Unlike trying to cop hyped sneakers on Nike app and Footlocker websites, which requires therapy afterward. Adidas does it for the fan, not hypebeasts. And that's another good reason why I stand by the brand.

Can't argue with the logic here, but just bear in mind that the ability to make boost midsoles only really came on stream in mid 2017. And adidas completely flooded the market not long thereafter. ultraboosts were just very limited by production constraints prior. Whilst the hype has died off somewhat, the ultraboost is now a readily accessible, extremely comfortable and stylish technology that goes on sale very often - customers win with that, rather than hypebeasts

two things.. the 3 stripes are NOT reflective.. they are just silver. And these are more comfortable than my alphas... when you take out the insole there appears to be a wedge of something stitched in to the heel. I think this wedge could possibly be a piece of hidden boost like in the aqua ZXs that dropped

Got one in Japan as soon as it released. I never owned any 4D before so I cant tell about any 4D before this but this Ultra4D is definitely fire and comfortable ! (you can still feel that stiffness but its soft like 80% of boost)

I think your analysis is totally off. Without sales figures, I am not sure why you assume that Adidas wasn’t making enough $ on boost. As for the release timing, not sure why you think that it was a decision not to release the 4D in 2019. The tech is brand new and to produce it massively it takes some time and investment. Plus, adidas could have been simply testing the waters.

When i heard about this shoe i was so hyped , but the price is to high for how easily this shoe can get destroyed and after all its not something to different ! NB and Reebok have amazing shoes that can live up to their price ! My ultra boost 1.0 were destroyed in like 5 months max . I have my reebok for like 2 years and have done 10 times what i did with the ultra boost and they are like new !

Good review. I did not cop these in August but I still want them so I have to go for the resell market. I own various pairs of ultra boost and Alpha edge and both walk very comfortable. I was only curious on the sizing. Recently I bought adidas run 4d 1.0 in the same size as my ultraboost. Normally I have a US 9 for the ultraboost but a US 9.5 for the alpha edge. Based on your review I will go for a size US9 because I still think they look great and I don't care about marketing and/or resell value.

As a consumer why do you care about hype? The less 'hype' is great for consumers. I've been able to cop ultra boost even 4ds for 50% off. Also Adidas doesn't make money of the resell prices. Paul Gaudio who was the global Creative Director will be leaving Adidas tomorrow (August 31, 2020) due to controversial reasons. But perhaps that’s what’s best for the company for reasons you’ve explained well at the beginning of this video. Adidas needs a new global creative director to push the brand in a new direction.
