I'm Swedish but my wife is a native Russian-speaker and her parents only speak Russian, so I had to learn. I don't speak Russian with my wife (we speak English with each other) so I kind of had to take it upon myself to learn. I have never taken any classes or read any books, I just watched a bunch of Russian TV and the reality shows my wife watches until I understood. Now I can speak fluently and without any accent, and you get quickly used to the grammar (except for genitive plurals, which tend to be pretty irregular). I like the mass exposure approach since it makes you just hear what "sounds right" after hearing things over and over again. I have listened to all the Russian top pop songs over and over again for years and can sing most of them by heart. Watch your favourite TV show with Russian dubs. Speaking of Tandem, make sure to write loads of people and introduce yourself to each one, after 50-100 introductions, you have loads of confidence in talking about yourself. I can recommend the Drops app for learning some topic-specific vocabulary. I remember all those words from there even a year later, and I certainly impressed my wife by finishing the "make up" category (румяна, тени для век, накладные ресницы, блеск для губ, губная помада, и тд) And I think one of the most valuable tips is to use Reverso context, I use it daily for the past four years, it's just that good. Just put whatever words you want and it gives you professionally translated samples. And by the way, Russian is incredibly rich in vocabulary (the Russian dictionary has almost as many words as the English one) and you will never quite stop learning. Written Russian is a whole different ball game, words that people rarely ever use in daily life, like распространённость (prevalence) and similar that I am now focusing on to sound a little more educated when speaking to her grandparents.

Thank you for your videos on learning Russian. I find them motivating. I am just starting to learn Russian now as I have always wanted to learn a second language as well as travel to Russia. As I had. Just finished my masters in psychology - I have a plan to travel to Russia and carry out ethnography based research in about 2 years. I am glad I found your videos as they are very informal. Once again - thank you so much

ThatOneCharlie даже “)))” в конце предложения ставишь как истинный русский. You even place “)))” to the end of sentence like native Russian!

Одна полезная подсказка - старайтесь разделять новые слова на части. Например "достопримечательности" До-сто-при-мечат-ель-ности Изучение слов таким способом поможет вам запомнить новые слова с помощью сравнения с подобными словами. Достойный - worthy При- towards Замечать - to notice Примечать - to take note of smth -ность a common feminine ending to make nouns from verbs/adjectives (я знаю, что строго говоря такое разделение не считается правильным и на самом деле лингвистически правильное разделение будет "Корень: -дост-; интерфикс: -о-; приставка: при-; корень: -меч-; суффиксы: -а-тельн-ость.")

This is a great point that I didn't make in my own comment since it was so well written here: Russian builds upon itself to a much higher degree than English, and for me it was rather difficult to recognise the components of longer words in the beginning. I remember struggling with remembering железнодорожный вокзал (train station) for a couple of weeks as I was just trying to learn it by heart. It was only a year or two later that I fully grasped that it's just железно (steel) дорожный (road) вокзал (Station) - makes a lot more sense, right?
@Ryan-vw8gn4 жыл бұрын
@@nore3 it's not useful to know, but a cool fact is that вокзал is actually borrowed from the English place Vauxhall Gardens which has a station
