at the moment, I'm really struggling with anxiety so it's prevented me from going to college completely. I am now studying 3 a-levels at home by myself with little to no support and I'm finding it hard. I don't know if I'm capable of doing it, but making an everyday timetable for studying is difficult and I find it hard to stick to it.

I was (mutually) kicked off Sociology A Level in very early Year 13 last school year, and I was really happy with that at the time, thinking 'I'm not going to University and this course is stupid anyway!'. I hadn't been taught it very well and even for the stuff they taught right, I had been so uninterested in the subject and school in general that I just didn't take anything in. Fast forward six months from leaving school, I realised I actually missed learning, when I was learning something that interested me and wasn't just told to learn, and I wanted to try Uni. So around the same time as you in very late february I bought an online course with my exams booked for 13 days' time. I'll update this comment on how it goes, but I've been following everything in this video despite only finding it today. And I now actually have a passion for sociology, despite only redoing it for a UCAS grade initially, and have really taken everything in in the very short amount of time I've given myself to do it. Finding out what I really need to learn and absolutely surrounding myself with that information has been the key so far. Here's hoping I can translate it into an exam!

If you are serious about applying to Oxbridge, I would aim higher than Durham for a second choice alternative in the UK, because the gap between Oxbridge and Durham is enormous.
@portablegoose10 ай бұрын
Hey man, been seeing you everywhere on the Durham videos. There's really no need for this - Durham is a great school, and it has one of the best humanities (esp English and History) departments in the UK. Prestige isn't the only thing that draws people to a school - there are other things that need to be taken into consideration. I think what draws a lot of people to Durham is how student friendly it is, it's quite small so commuting is hardly an issue and socialising is trifle. Personally, I might not even bother applying for Oxbridge because neither offers a course that I'm interested enough in to justify the workload and competition. Of course, Oxford and Cambridge are great schools, but they aren't the ONLY great schools. It isn't 'Oxbridge or nothing', as I recall you saying on another video, it's not even the Russell Group or nothing. It is reductive and fallacious to suggest otherwise and more than that it is unkind.

I think it would help out a lot to first learn the Russian alphabet, familiarize yourself with how words are pronounced. Just like with almost any language, there are patterns, with only a certain number of phonemes (syllable sound units) that if you can pick up and be familiar, your reading and comprehension and absorption of new words will be enormously enhanced. And now you'll be ready for Duolingo. Duolingo will not prepare you in this way to make learning as easy as it should be. This is where Duolingo gets you. You'll make too many mistakes, 5 in a day is what you're allowed and then you'll have to wait the next day for your 5 allowed mistakes or get off the free plan and pay to get an unlimited mistake allowance. I'm on the free plan, but did the prep work before starting Duolingo so rarely hit the 5 mistake limit and haven't felt the need to pay to upgrade. In fairness to Duolingo I have to mention that if you're down to one more allowed mistake and if you can continue for a while without using it up, Duolingo will offer you the chance to add another free allowable mistake in return for watching some usually short ad. So, in my opinion Duolingo can be pretty good provided that you do some prep work first before starting (learn the alphabet, familiarize yourself with how words are pronounced in Russian) then you'll do good in Duolingo and maybe even become fluent! I'm working on it myself and am on unit 7 and so far so good, so wish me luck!🍀
