The advice here is spot on. I thought my doctor was crazy when he told me to experiment with my sleep routine by going to bed LATER. You see I'd fallen into a trap of getting stressed about how poorly I was sleeping. So I'd feel this urgency to get to bed earlier. Yet I'd toss and turn - stressing about not sleeping! So I implemented a wind-down routine and a set time each night to get to bed. I now wake 85% of the time naturally. I sleep more deeply. My wind-down time is typically journaling, or colouring (those colouring books for grown-ups are awesome). I love how the key message in the video is that every persons' sleep is very individual! Sure takes the pressure off.

A few years ago (2011) i wasnt working and took a year off for myself. I was 270 pounds and decided to workout everyday and since i didnt have to wake up early, i was sleeping 12 hours a day. Let me tell you, my body rewarded me huge for that amount of rest. It was so much easier to lose body fat and got down to 168 pounds. I felt extremely healthy and i just felt fantastic overall. That showed me how powerful getting a lot of sleep was. It was amazing.

@@Annima1016 Thank you. Unfortunately I don't. When I started working again it was difficult to sleep 12 hours a day like I was because of my schedule. Especially trying to fit everything else in during the day like personal errands, gym, family, growing a business, etc. Sometimes it feels like there isn't enough time in the day to get everything done no matter how much you try and what most people sacrifice in order to get everything done is sleep. Sleep is the key ingredient to incredible health and I have personally felt what it can do for someone's health and stress levels.

My takeaways from this video about the things that were implied or talked about: Sleep is individual because it is genetic. 8 hours is just a guideline. Do not shortcut sleep, because the tail end of sleep is cognitive restoration which is probably the most important. Blue light at night is very disruptive for sleep, because it prevents the producing of sleep hormones like melatonin. Also, it's important to chill out few hours before bed because a racing mind make sit harder to sleep. So sleep hygiene is very important. Next qn: What constitutes to sleep hygiene? Blue light wakes you up, which means getting some sunlight when you are sleep deprived might make you feel better. Based upon their sleep routine, I realised that having a consistent sleeping schedule is very important. Perhaps, it has to do with how your body works to produce hormones and how it works in a rhythmic fashion(circadian rhythm). Control your caffeine intake. Pharmaceutical sleep is very different from natural sleep. If you can, avoid the use of such supplements which prevent restorative sleep for mental cognition from happening, which can also cause Alzheimers. Purposely depriving yourself of sleep for a day can help you sleep on time the next day, which helps you get back into your circadian rhythm. E.g. Not sleeping for a day when you are jet lagged and just came back from a night flight and just sleeping at 10pm the next day Takeaways from other videos: Exercise makes your body tired which makes you fall asleep better. Don't exercise too close to bedtime because it takes a longer time for you to chill out.

Hi Tom! About that voice in our heads, and wanting to shut it down. I know it takes practice to let go, but there is another factor that I rarely hear about. If I were a sleep doctor, I would explore the latest on Adrenal Fatigue. The fatigue is caused by always being in Fight and Flight Mode, due to work, traffic, a bad relationships, etc. First of all even with adrenal fatigue I was able to shut the voice up and enjoy sleep. My approach was the logic that these bills and problems will be there when I wake up, and that these things will not only deplete my bank, but my sleep, health and vitality, also if i got to sleep I will be more effective the next day to deal with my problems. With more sleep, we can think more logical and less emotional being grumpy and have a higher tolerance for stressful situations. Not only that, more sleep gives us a better cognitive session the first 4 to 5 hours in the morning, and with this logic and calling on my lazy side to rationalize and justify letting go. I was able to beat insomnia. I also concentrate on the moment, the relaxation and sensation of finally resting my head on the pillow. This being present to the moment really captures my nervous system and influences my brain chemistry, setting myself up for sleep mode. So logic, emotion, advantage (strategy), and changing the channel in your mind from "Finance Channel/Tomorrows Agenda Channel/The Family Channel, Etc., to the Sleep Now Channel, focusing on relaxation and comfort in the now. Leave all things go, in or out of your control, and give in to the pleasant comfort of the moment with gratitude and think Ooooh Thank you (with gratitude) hmmmm. Try your best to stay in touch with the sensation, relaxing your body, let the tension in your muscles leave your body, don't resist gravity, and welcome the entering into sleep to happen with great trust, as if God is taking you to a place to heal and restore your super powers. This will send a message to every cell in your body and authorize your mind to let go of tending to the moment (your attention), and this is called resting your mind to sleep. Now back to shutting up that voice. The solution is Vitamin B1. That;s it., not really. The problem is Adrenal Fatigue, the Adrenal glands are right above your kidneys. It is responsible for responding to stress and reducing inflammation by releasing cortisol. Etc. Research it. Adrenal Fatigue puts us into fix mode. Are minds are always racing, we are constantly looking for problems to solve and it never ends. Adrenal Fatigue is the number one cause of insulin resistance. Our Adrenals store B1. These glands, one above each kidney can become fatigue after years of stress, and then we develop all kinds of problems, belly fat obesity, diabetes, insomnia, and a racing mind. Fix the Adrenal Fatigue and this will help in hushing your mind. Also do not eat sugary stuff 2 hours before bed, the body wants to repair itself during sleep, it can not do so with insulin in your blood. The body needs Growth harmone to do repairs, if you are pumped with insulin, you can lose about 2 to 3 hours of body repair opportunity for feeling great the next day. So it's the entire body that needs a good night sleep. Mitochondria production for energy and muscle repair to.

My TV shuts off every morning at 12:30 am, and I don't even know it, because it did it's job 😊 I also sleep with earbuds to listen to nature sounds, and affirmations, to drown out the noise in my household (I live with loud night owls lol). It took me a minute to get this combination to somewhat work..

Wow. Thank you. I have always been a night owl and if left to my own devices I always go back to it. I wish you had covered what is going on with waking early by an hour or two even when on the best sleep cycle.

I'm a regular person who lived in a house of 9 ppl, from birth I'm up at 4am in the dark, grandmother was up by 4:30 am all through school-age um 4-5 jump OK at 8yr old I seek out people that were up early in the hood, so motivating, I needed to learn why they were up! Jump to having kids did my best to keep a reg. school schedule, long story short, I have 4 grown kids 2 Aries. So I started readings astrology help me tremendously along with the Chinese matched the signs. At 60 things look pretty good I watched older people closely, not sure what age dad died he was old... MOM is 85 and the sharpest person I know, sometimes I can't stand it I love her so much! I get 4 to 5 hrs a sleep a night and this pandemic it the biggest challenge ever, google+youtube is a lifesaver. I watch these videos to learn all I can. Thank you

I hope things have improved for you. I have dealt with terrible sleep a good part of my life. Keep experimenting. Ironically, one thing that helped me is what the one doctor said contributes to Alzheimer's - benedryl. I've been taking it every day for the last 15 years and it has helped. I don't believe he's on solid ground claiming that risk btw. I switch it up with Unison too. Make sure you get the unisom or generic with the active ingredient that is unique to unisom. Unisom has versions that are just benedryl. I also take Epsom salt baths before bed. Don't be shy on using plenty of Epsom salt! Also, I take magnesium, which is the key ingredient in Epsom salts. That mineral is required to be relax you muscles. You see magnesium is a common ingredient in the laxative products - allow bowel muscles to relax and allow purge.

Being sleep deprived consistently for 10+ years, my body broke down 2 years ago by a burn out. All kinds of symptoms and tried different methods like fasting, juice fasting, keto, supplements like magnesium and more. My chiro who also suffered a burn out told me to fuck all of that and get quality deep sleep. After getting away from electronics for 2 months on vacation, nothing made me feel better than actual deep sleep. Almost felt normal again but reintroducing sleep deprivation made me feel like shit really quickly again lol.

@@jonathanh9392 Yeah, exercise mate. Frequent sauna use and consistent exercise combined with sunlight early on (morning if possible) has massively improved my sleep. I use the Oura ring to track my sleep and noticed it really does improve. But I have this bad habit to check my phone before sleeping and even game sometimes and that really disrupts it. I deleted all SM from my mobile the last week and the difference is night and day.

Bang on! When was going through radiation therapy, I was either sleeping, on the john, or going to or coming from the radiation. There really WAS no life outside of that. Eating was restricted to a blender full of the exact nutrients I required to get through the radiotion, and that was it. I woke enough in the morning to cut up 2 bananas, skins and all, 1 half bag of frozen blueberries, dump into my blender, dropped in about half a jar of peanut butter and then added about another 2 cups of milk. Hit the high speed button, let it rip... pour a glass 1st thing in the morning to a smoothie, then put the whole container into the refrigerator. One large glass 1st thing in the morning, fall back to sleep, wake whenever, use the facilities, have another drink on the way back to bed, crash for a few more hours, wake up hours later, take daughter's dog out for a short walk, have another glass, go back to bed, set alarm for when need to wake to prepare to be at rad appointment, go back to bed AGGAIN, crash, again. Alarm goes off, take dog out...have another glass....take a quick shower...have a glass...use facilities, wash...get redressed, grab whatever, wait for ride to cancer clinic, get radiation, drag self home(not kidding on the *drag*) have another glass...drag into bed...leave dog to daughter(her's after all) sleep.

@amybender44114 жыл бұрын
I'm not trying to be a downer here but there are so many mistakes in this interview... #1) Stage 4 sleep is no longer a thing. That rule changed in 2004 . Stage 3 is the deepest sleep. #2) Minor thing - it is REM not R-E-M or NREM not N-R-E-M. #3) The research shows there are 3 chronotypes: night owl ~15%, early morning lark ~15%, and an intermediate type ~70%. Dr. Breus has many more than this with wolf, bear, lion? This is not evidence-based #4) We only need 5:45 to 6:15 hr of sleep. So not true!! Sleep experts recommend 7h and up. #5) REAL scientists don't throw out f-bombs. Totally inappropriate and unprofessional. #6) He can take your 23 and me and predict exactly how much you need, I highly doubt that. PER-3 is one gene there are so many more genes that determine your sleep need. Furthermore, twin studies show that sleep duration is also related to environmental issues too and only about 50% genetic. #7) Sleep calculator is not a thing in sleep science, believe me I've scored about 1,000 sleep records. You can't work yourself backward in 90 min increments. Sleep cycles fluctuate within people from night to night. I may have a 90 min cycle tonight and tomorrow have 110 min cycle depending on caffeine intake, exercise, a random awakening etc. #8) Minor thing - hard to believe that the lady's boss told some random Dr. that he's firing her on Friday? #9) Contradicts himself when he says chronotype is all genetics and then says it can change a lot across the lifespan . That shows there are environmental components. #10) Zolpidem doesn't reduce deep sleep Refs 1) Br J clin Pharmac 1994; 37: 539-543 Effects of zolpidem on sleep architecture, night time ventilation, daytime vigilance and performance in heavy snorers. 2) Comparison of the effects of zolpidem and triazolam on nocturnal sleep and sleep latency in the morning: A cross-over study in healthy young volunteers.This study showed an increase in deep sleep with zolpidem. I think I will stop there.
@grandem20084 жыл бұрын
You comment is so underrated :D. Have you looked into his chronotypes? Not evidence based at all? I can identify so much with the wolf chronotype :D, otherwise night owl. Really looking forward to my 23andme results
