Ciao a tutti! After 30 minutes of filming, I realised I had forgotten to turn my mic on….the realities of being a content creator! 🤪 What did you think about the stats? Comment below and let me know!

My husband and I became Italian ex pats when we were 61 and 65 years old. I was surprised to see that the average age for expats was in their 40's. We love ITALY & are trying to learn the language. The downside to us is the driving! At first we took the bus, which we loved, but them bought a car after 6 years so we could explore small towns. They are crazy drivers--they do not obey the traffic signs, pressure you to speed or try to run you off the road. They pass on curves and when they do pass, they almost clip your bumper. Let's not go too much in details of the crazy motor cyclist, that passes between cars, on both the left and the right of cars. So we reserve our car for the grocery store and take the train to other places. However we do love it here.

It's perfect for me! I'm 63. Retired. Don't want to work, only travel. Don't want to meet a bunch of friends. So, it sounds awesome. I've been watching the homes for sale and learning different areas.

Interesting statistics! Here in Orte we have a small group of Expats and it kind of resembles these numbers. I’d say we, Americans, are more than 13% here in Orte. Eyeballing it I’d say we are about 50% USA, and the rest a mix between Brits, Irish, Polish, Germans, and Romanians

I agree with you that not everyone learns languages the same. I tried all the usual routes to learning Italian but it wasn't sticking in my brain. Until I found a 3 course programme where you learn mix and match sentences set to rhythm and music. It went straight into the musical memory and it went in fast. After doing those any learning I did after that was easy and it was like a Springboard. Anything I did with the language learning after that was suddenly easy. I could not have accomplished it without that as I tried and failed so many times. I'm definitely not a traditional language learner where grammar is learnt by rote/repetition. I feel I'm more like a small child who learnt by hearing it repeatedly (the music course) then my brain seemed to open up after that and the grammar came last - but no-one in Italy cares if your grammar is the wrong tense - they understand you and they correct you and it all falls into place. So heads up to anyone who needs to learn a different way. It's called Earworms Learning and they have many languages. Also you learn the pronunciation really well with it and I get complimented on my pronunciation a lot. If you say the vowel sounds slightly differently they don't make sense to the person you are speaking to.

I really like your videos and even bought your guide to Salerno, even though my family is from there and I sometimes think about retiring there one day. But I'm really disappointed in you still using the term Expat. Tell me the difference between an Expat and any other immigrant please.

Thank you for your support! I actually talk about this very topic in my latest podcast episode. You can listen to it on KZbin here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZqlp2ammbSXY6Msi=_WdKnpnxgCStdW_V I actually think of myself as both an Expat and an Immigrant but I think you’ll find that episode interesting!

If you are retired or are teleworking Italy is perfect. If you want to work in Italy ...it is challenging and wages are very low.

PS - bizarrely Italy seems like Japan RE work culture (I lived in Tokyo for 5 years) and in Japan it's a very old fashioned work culture too, no questioning of authority, VERY long hours, even weekends etc etc....with weird hierarchical promotion structures, so I thought that was interesting because in general they are of course very different countries
@MsBritaly3 ай бұрын
That’s interesting and it almost seems to be at odds with the view most people have of life there!

I think Italian is an easy language but it might be difficult for you if this is your first time learning a language, not only you learn new vocab new grammar rules but you also learn how to learn a language, the latter is more difficult than the first

Yes it is.

How do immigrants/expats save for retirement in Italy? Are you eligible to pay into the public pension program, or do you just have to put money aside and save for retirement on your own?
@MsBritaly2 ай бұрын
If you’re working here, you contribute into the pension program but the pension in Italy is low and therefore I think it’s important to have other options.

The views that you get from Italy, is it not expats viewing like me? I moved here with my husband because my husband has Italian citizenship, so I guess that counts as moving for love, although I class it as work reasons as he got a transfer with his company. I think some expats STAY for love, but I don’t really think they come for love
@MsBritaly2 ай бұрын
Yes - of course fellow expats count too! 😊

What does "expat" mean? Does it mean immigrant? If it doesn't how do you differentiate between an "expat" and an immigrant? Because the statistics are very different if you factor in all foreigners and by no means do Americans represent 13% of all foreigners in Italy.
@MsBritaly3 ай бұрын
This question I dive into on my podcast - I’ll link the episode below. As for the statistics break down - these are the results of a survey and of those who actually knew about it and participated in it, so of course there are going to be some expats that fell by the wayside. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZqlp2ammbSXY6Msi=zhN8sHBz8hZWQWmh

L'Italia non è un posto in cui trovare lavoro. Per cambiare in meglio questo aspetto si deve smettere di lasciar governare l'Italia agli italiani. Non c'è, né ci sarà, altro modo.
