One of the fascinating aspects of microscopy is the way you can look so deeply into something that it becomes unrecognizable. What could look like a stained glass window could actually turn out to be... a hopping shrimp?

As someone who breeds amphipods professionally, I have to say that some of them are quite hardy. Most of them are quite good at thriving in areas with low oxygen content. Definitely fun to look at and great for aquarium and pond life. I can ship them world wide with travel times of up to 14 days without issues, so you might have packed them wrong.

it’s also a scale thing: they’re huge and need so many nutrients compared to the true microrganisms. also like…. the sheer varieties of ways a thing can be sensitive vs resilient. the ones in my aquaria are more sensitive to copper, but more tolerant to temperature and oxygen shifts

@@PadraigpNo, likely is still true, especially when it’s a proper well! No copper, metals, or substantial toxins, and coming from a well means stagnant water, which they can survive more than fish on average, is much less likely. For the dangers well waters tend to face, they’re a good indicator

We used to find them in well water and everyone said its a good sign that the water is very pure and good. And it was good water. They were like little sea monkeys very tiny little guys that went more up and down than side to side in the bottle. I always thought it was a good thing cos old people usually know things. They also said if licen grows well it means the air is very good and the air was good around there and not much cars and lots of hanging lichen off the trees. In winter they nearly looked like a full on tree growing on the bare branches. 😳

I love the way microbes floated around these amphipods. Normally so difficult to see without a microscope, I can't help but imagine what life would look like if microbes were as visible to us as they must be to these crustaceans. Entire clouds and halos surrounded these guys, and I'm sure it is the same with us humans. Very beautiful imagery here, as always!

I'm pushing 80. My consciousness is as high as is going to get. Is there a version of micro cosmos for old people who want to know the science without the preaching? I did my bit for the planet by choosing not to have children, though for women of my generation that choice made me a villain, and shucks, the population doubled anyway... I'm comforted by knowing that genetically speaking humans have lost so much diversity we're already extinct. So the earth will survive us, too; probably not the expansion of the surface of the sun.😅
