It's a mistake to think horseshoe crabs (celocanths, sharks or crocodiles) haven't evolved over hundreds of millions of years. They may be recognizable, but anything with a lifespan will evolve.

Its probably familiarization. A spider can be and will be anywhere it wants to be, whether that be out in the woods or on your bedroom wall. But a crab? Be a bit hard pressed to find one chilling in the corner of your room. Also we are told to be scared of spiders but not usually crabs other than "their pincers hurt." Similar with the airplane, unless you fly for your job you dont fly that often and also dont literally know the pain of a plane crash. But falling off a ten foot ladder? Any time you've scraped skin, broken bones, multiply it and you know what it would feel like to fall. Idk, just my take on it.

Used to have a small tank on the property I grew up on. It was in a drought prone area. So, every time it rained crazy critters would come out. Well, tiny little horseshoes would come out to play. We never killed them. It was fascinating ❤

You should have mentioned that horseshoe crab blood is very valuable, threatening them. The blood can be "milked" from them but many still die in that process.

@@tanostrelok2323 to make limulus amebocyte lysate, or LAL to test pharmaceuticals for impurities. There is a way to test it on rabbits but it's more $$ for the companies. A synthetic LAL exits but used very little around the world, I don't think at all in the US🤨

Horseshoe crab blood (which is blue, bonus fact) coagulates when it comes in contact with bacteria. In an ideal world, they'd take some blood from each crab and then release them, sorta like a human blood doner. Unfortunately, it's highly unregulated, and pharma companies rarely let ethics or ecological concerns get in the way of a quick profit

I love this concept snd have since i was a little tyke, imagine a 5 year old coming up to you and talking about how things evolve into crab shapes that arent crabs because it works so well in the environment and actually having examples, people were legit weirded our by me as a kid because i always was a sponge for fun facts but i also looked into them with encyclopedias and dictionaries and educational programming on tv (my dad is a nuclear engineer and my mom has a PhD learnibg was very much fostered in the home)

Their endangerment, unfortunately, comes from us hunting them for their blood, which has pretty amazing properties. So, if you live in an area with horseshoe crabs, please help any you see that are flipped by the tide. They can get unstuck usually, but sometimes they do die.

You visited my home state! Years ago, I helped my boss run a workshop for teachers over a weekend on horseshoe crabs and it was great! We got to bring the teachers out at night to see the horseshoe crabs then, as well as during the day. I still remember being a child and taking a field trip to see the horseshoe crabs & I’ve loved them ever since! I hope you had a good time in Delaware & enjoyed our beaches! Personally i think crabs fit two simultaneous truths: Crabs are *a* peak of evolution, an inherent path for many animals to take. Many crustaceans already evolve to have sturdier and sturdier armor, stronger weapons, and general appeal to mates. It makes sense. Crabs also... are lame. They aren't losing their place in the food chain and the environment, everything has one in the jenga tower we call the ecosystem, but they're not going up. At the very least they are not as susceptible to environmental changes as frogs are. Tl;Dr: crabs as a concept: 8/10, crabs in practice: 5.5/10

Crabs are peak arthropods. Notice how scorpions look the same for the past 400 million years, but they shrunk. Crabs have done the exact opposite.

Turned out being compact and nimble enough to hide in rocks is easier than trying to outrun predators. Crustaceans lost their dominance in the open water due to the speed advantage of the fishes but hiding in cracks is never going out of style.
