Well done for bringing up David Coffield issue. We must not be silent.

Thank you for talking honestly about Copperfield. This is the biggest piece of magic-related news this year, and if magicians as a whole do not speak up about it, it will only serve to hurt the public's perception of magicians and magic. We need to speak up about it, disavow him, and let magic move forward without Copperfield as a guidepost. As far as Dan & Dave, I'm honestly stoked. This is a huge move for them, and I can only hope that other authors of magic take note of the response and consider doing similar. Keeping secrets among magicians and only allowong those who can afford it to join only hurts magic long-term, and having open and free access to materials is a huge boon overall. Also, fwiw, about the one-month experiment idea, if you want to do something similar, as far as I know it's possible to declare _certain works_ as public domain and not others, though check various resources about it and don't trust a random commenter before doing anything lol

I'm very confused by the Buck's announcement. I didn't look closely enough at it when it first came out, but I'm definitely confused now that you've gone into it. How can you dedicate works to the public domain and then claim that distribution of those works would be piracy? Are they only dedicating works that are uncopyrightable anyway (i.e. the individual moves and routines themselves) while retaining copyright on the published works in which they are explained? If so, they aren't going to have much legal ground to stand on if someone reasonably understands differently and begins freely distributing those works by, say, posting them on youtube. My original interpretation, "we're out of the magic/cardistry creation business so you can do what you want with our old stuff", made a lot more sense to me.

thanks for taking abt copperfield i personally don't think keeping it hidden is going to benefit anybody, and the more we can get it out there that we don't support him the better off magic as a art will be that being said dan and dave absolutely fucking slaying with this

Do you have a link to the Dan and Dave stuff?
@CavanBooth15 ай бұрын
Like I say, they're not giving it away for free and you can't pirate the material. If you buy or own any stuff, you have the right to use it
@Theponderpond5 ай бұрын
They had to update to clarify that they are still against the piracy and uploading of their DVDs and downloads. It did seem that they were allowing that at first.

Is there a link for the magic they are sharing?

Great news Cavan. The stuff about Copperfield starting leaking out a while ago, but only now getting the light because of all involved. Dan and Dave sounds too good to be true. But looking forward to see what comes out. 😊👍😊👍👏😎🙏

Yeah on Copperfield 😑... Though I do wish the moon vanish would have happened before this, or still will. Very unlikely

how is the indian rope trick is done? how does the man climbs the rope?

Penn&Teller should do that when they retire or die: leave all their original IP into the public domain; perhaps reserving a few choice items like their bullet trick.

I thought Banachek developed the bullet trick and licensed it to P&T.

Maybe I am mistaken. But anything you publish in magic is automatically public domain. Anyone can create their own version of a published effect. Just looka t the ammount of "out of this world" or "Triumph" Vernon never gave anything as public domain. And all of his effectss are taught. If seems more like a publicity thing by D and D to create sales in their old material. If it was honest, they would make their materiall free for download. Its still a positive thing-
@CavanBooth15 ай бұрын
When a magician dies, their work becomes public domain. So when Vernon died, Triumph et al became free to teach and adapt!
@arminpeter1255 ай бұрын
@@CavanBooth1Interesting. I was wondering about that . When Tommy Wonder died, the family was very protective of his work.There are also many variations of Dan and dave routines by other creators already. I still dont see how this is helping the community. They still ask money for their routines and have now given permission to others to ask for money for teaching their routines. Maye I am overlooking something here.

This has always been something that’s bothered me. So many magicians I see do effects and routines that are decades old. Even if it’s dressed up. But then all I hear is don’t steal be original. So I assumed that meant, how you portray yourself? Seems a real grey area, that we police ourselves in the community. Since the “rules” are kinda unwritten.

As an criminologist, one who studies crime, I am extremely skeptical of any accusations being made years later. In addition, many of those in the articles states that they did not feel anything was inappropriate until years later; that is a problem. Furthermore, David is innocent until proven guilty and i see there it nothing that to date have been found to lend any credibility to guilt. Finally, he was accused and under federal investigation back in early 2000s where the accuser was found to have fabricated the assault allegation. Not. Saying all famous people are not capable of raping others, but there must be more than hanging stories later. The article had at least two that did not want their name to be used, prop all because they would have to payback nda settlement they were given and don’t want to have to pay the premium penal that goes with it!

I understand signing an nda for business related issues but signing one because of an interaction you had with someone is pretty sus. It’s doesn’t look good for copperfield. Pretty sure the presumption of innocence only relates to court, not public opinion.

Has David Copperfield been officially charged and tried for his alleged crimes? If not he is still presumed innocent in this country. While I don't know much about these allegations all I ask is to have a little balance in our reporting and discussions on this topic.
@NigelShepherd-z7k4 ай бұрын
That's true but in this internet and social media age and in the court of public opinion.... He's pretty much done anyway.
@TheSleightDoctor5 ай бұрын
Seriously though, DC has always given me the creeps. That's partly just a general aversion to big, theatrical stage illusionism (close-up is my thing) but also, even as a kid I found his whole persona dislikeable. I realise that's almost heretical to say to another magician, and I intend no offense, however it's very difficult for me not to feel vindicated by these accusations.

Your talking about Copperfield for clicks which is extremely lazy and unethical.

"For clicks" ... yet its not in the title or thumbnail? Not one person clicked on this video thinking I would talk about it.

@@CavanBooth1 I came in here ready to talk about in the comments because I didn't figure it was going to come up from the thumbnail. Ultimately glad you did talk about it. Dude is innocent until proven guilty in the eyes of the court, but in the eyes of the public? That's a different matter entirely.
