Great pro tips Matt. It’s crazy to think…what if you didn’t do just one of these small things during the tourney? It could have cost you the win. Most folks don’t realize how much attention to detail you guys put in to your craft, well done. And thanks for sharing with the general public, it gets the wheels turning for sure.

I was wondering if you have ever tried this tip: I have had issues in the past with my worm’s getting torn apart a lot so I started prerigging them with a 3/8” diameter, 1/2” long piece of clear heat shrink tubing. I insert the worm into the tubing, apply a quick flame to it and the heat shrink tubing tightens around the worm. I then insert my hook through the tubing and the worm. This worm is now nearly indestructible and lasts a LONG time, probably longer than you want. Try it. It will save you a boatload of worms.
@MattStefanFishing Жыл бұрын
i have tried it and it works, but i prefer my worm to be able to move on the hook and heat shrink locks it in place

Thank you Matt... another excellent video on details. On windy days Ill also add a screw in very small tail spinner blade ( to tail end of wacky worm) either in colorado or willow leaf shape. It adds just enough weight and flash on really windy days. Also adds an appeal to bass that their not used to seeing. Can be good for straight worming and flipping and punching cover also. Tim Nelson

Matt. You are so spot-on with using a smaller hook on a wacky rig to avoid balls of grass. I dont have a boat, but as a bank angler, this method has proven lethal on my artifical, man made lake here in Northern, Il. I get other anglers asking what am I doing different where I get Bass and they dont. The secret is the 1/0 hook. Too bad that I cannot share pictures here on KZbin but in all my catches, it is a textbook catch and hookset. Congrats again on this accomplishment of winning the Open

Matt. Awesome, congratulations on the win and thanks for sharing your knowledge. It's really incredible that you do this! You've asked for tips, so here's one, something that's worked for me is a nail weight with a skirt when they are taking it off the bottom and not eating the traditional wacky the way you may have expected, especially if you get a short strike or a bass looking and turning away, sometimes this is the ticket. I believe the movement of the skirt while keeping the worm dead on the bottom may be what puts them in the boat.

What a way to end the season💰 Great detailed breakdown on your winning pattern! 🐟 Decoy makes a Worm Holder spring. It is a coil spring that you place in the bait. Simply screw the spring into the worm and around the hook. The bait is almost indestructible! 🐟 On green pumpkin or baby bass colors, I take a black sharpie and color the tail. When you see a small bass in the water the first thing you notice is the black tail.

I've done it with green pumpkin and purple fleck. Gives a little subtle difference but similar color of green sunfish. I always try to match the hatch, and it usually works well. I also rig the wacky worms like a Texas rig and sometimes add weight. Other times, I let it slowly sink for a different presentation. Either way has caught me fish.

I use cut pieces of a stainless steel rod and insert them into 5" stick worms (directly below the hook) to increase the fall rate and get a little more wobble action as it falls. I prefer the 6" worms because I think they wobble better but adding weight to the shorter ones seems to help.

I've just never had a lot of luck with a wacky rig. I know it works really well because everyone else talks about it and I see guys online just tearing them up with it- but I bet I could count my wacky bass on one hand. I'm going to try it again in the morning- tbh though I've had more luck rigging it weightless on an ewg- Texas rig style. It still falls the same as a wacky rig- but about halfway down it will usually tilt toward the hook end and plane out to bottom. Why that works better for me, no idea- but it seems to. I use JJ's for dye- I'll give that a shot in the morning as well- thanks Matt.

I like inserting a worm rattle in just above where a nail would go for neko rig to give it some sound. Also I like to use green pumpkin, junebug, and white depending on what I am doing. White is what like to follow for topwater. I also like going with a small hook all the time and dying the tip of the tail. The hook I go with is Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap Hooks in #1-2 size all the time so I do not loose fish.

Depending on the situation and what I'm trying to do, but I do sneek some super light split shot from my fly vest. We're talking at the light side of a 1/64 oz. Sometimes all you need is a little weight. A small finishing nail is an old school solution. I carry a few that are only a half inch long! Push one at each end and you can still hook it in the middle. 😳 Give that one a try Matt.

My seven year old grandson taught me hooking the wack rig off center. The closer he’d hook it at the end the more the bait would spiral down on slack line. I hooked him up on the first worm and after about three docks he finally got bit, he hooked up the next worm way off center of course and started catching two or three almost every dock. The fish liked that slight spiral that day

I fish my wacky rig on spinning tackle mostly but when I was watching how you guys were fishing it made me wonder about using a lighter baitcasting setup to allow more control and also to allow for a few more casts or presentations during the course of a fishing day.
