It's so sad and cruel :/ I got my 1st betta ever in a wedding in 2010, cause they were table decorations, so at the time I didn't know anything about bettas, so he only lived for 3 months in his 1 gallon tank. I got a beta for Christmas, a very beautiful blue one, named him Finn , I had him for maybe a year and he developed a swim bladder issue where he couldn’t swim down anymore, we looked up how to help him and treated him with natural laxatives as instructed, it was a rollercoaster and his condition went up and down until one day he just gave up, he stopped eating. My first ever fish who I loved the most essentially committed suicide, I was so sad and scarred, I stuck to keeping khuli loaches since then, both the ones I got are still alive, Larry and louie. So did I miss what temperature the tank should be? My Betta heater only gets the tank up to 74 degrees. He’s in a 3 gal tank. My last one lived 2.5 years in this tank with this heater and was about 2 years when I got him where he didn’t have a heater. When I do the water changes every 2-3 weeks, I do replace it with warmer water about 80degrees and reintroduce him to it. It take about 3-4 days for the water to return to 74 degrees. In a 3 gal tank can he have a tank mate? Or is the tank too small?

I have three female and one male Betta living harmoniously in a 37 gallon aquarium. I have it filled with aquarium plants that are live and a couple of fake colorful ornamental plants and a floating log. They seem to be happy. One of them was very aggressive when I first got her so I kept her in a smaller tank for a week and then I re-introduced her to the pack and she was fine after that. I probably do overfeed them, so I will need to watch that, I do keep the water warm and I monitor the nitrogen levels constantly and I did not know about the dark water although the tank that I have does have a blue light which I use during the early evening hours.

For people buying the super tiny heaters for 1-3 gallon tanks (which are to small for bettas anyways!) DO YOUR RESEARCH, read the reviews. Many of those heaters do not have auto shut offs that turn off once the water reaches a certain temp and many many many MANY people have shared about their fish being killed because they were essentially cooked alive because the water got to hot!

if you are worried about your city doing random chlorine dumps then you can age your water before using it. leave it in a bucket in open air for the chlorine to off gas into the air. takes 24-48 hours for all the chlorine to evaporate. this is what people did before water conditioners.

Right now I have a Fluval Flex 8 gallon and am keeping an eye out for a Betta, and some itty bitty appropriate tank mates. The difference this time, is that I did my research... and still am. I won't lie, I'm paranoid despite all the precautions, but this is one of very few hobbies I've liked the idea of since I ended up in a wheelchair. - A reason I'm sticking to small tanks. I think it may be the water conditions, as weeks before he was pineconing, I did not do water change but instead i just add in more new dechlorinated water as some had already evaporated. Before being lazy and just simply topping in water, i did approximately about 20% water change and he did not have any issues.

Started out in a bowl.. then a 1.7 gal tank where he stayed for the remainder of his life. He sure was tough cause I didn't have a heater for most of his life. I got one when he was like 4, and he was so happy! One day I came home and it was like 105°F that day.. his water temp had spiked to like 99°F and he looked crazy, like he was cooking in there! His eyes were popping out and he was sideways and just looked at me like, "HELP!".. I panicked and unplugged the heater.. totally thought he was gonna die but he pulled through and went back to normal. Had him for a couple more years after that. He survived the ups and down of me learning about fish and his needs. All the time he was my little buddy who was always happy to see me, and I him❤ miss that guy. lifespan also can be altered by the source of the fish. chain stores like petco/smart who keep bettas in poor conditions, those fish likely wont live as long as a healthily bred one. even if you do put one in perfect conditions, the origin most likely effect the lifespan

This is very true. Our first Betta was from a local pet shop. The tanks never looked that clean, Bettas were in with other, nippy fish and often other Betta (usually just the females, but tanks were small and the females were covered in stress stripes) etc. We used to go in to get other pet bits. One day I sent my son to look at the fish while I got bits. He fell in love with a male Betta. We'd never had fish and I didn't want to get a full set up and then a month later, he's not interested, so we left it. We had a holiday booked and I knew nothing about fish, definitely nothing about Betta. We kept popping back and he kept looking at that one fish, he even named it. That's when I knew, if he didn't get sold he would be coming home with us at some point. I did loads of research. Got a 10 gallon tank with a heater, filter, live plants, some with big leaves, so he could rest on them as I'd read Bettas liked that. He also had a floating log thing. I started cycling the tank. A couple of months later, the tank was finally ready and we went to pick him up. He was a veiltail, but his poor fins were a raggedy mess. It was 6 months since my son had first seen him and fallen in love. He was a full grown when we first saw him, not young and we'd not been in there and looked at the fish before that first time we saw him, so he coukd potentially have been in those cramped, less than ideal conditions, with nippy tank mates for over a year for all I know. He was a goid sized male when we got him and hadn't grown since the first time we saw him, so my guess was he was a minimum of 9 months old when we got him, but he could have been a lot older than that. He loved his new home, which he shared with a couple of nerite snails. Sadly we only had him a year and a half before he passed away. His fins started growing back shortly after he moved in with us, partially because of the regular water changes and partly because of the Indian Almond Leaves I put in the tank with him. I think unfortunately, his life before he came to us limited how long we would get to enjoy his company. I also very much doubt they were that bothered about good genetics either, so that may have been a factor too.

Not sure why I watched this. I usually hate Betta videos. I've had Betta's off and on since I was a kid. I never used less than a ten gallon tank for them. I bred them and sold or gave them away. It has always amazed me how terribly abused and neglected this fish is. And many people in general, get dogs, cats, reptiles etc. And never read or watch a video on how to raise them. And people buying fish are even worse. Straight tap water in a tall skinny vase. No water conditioner. No live plants. Little room to swim in. Their suffering goes on and on. And people say, well..... it's just a fish. Well no, once home, it's your pet and your responsibility to give it the best life possible. Most of the blame is on the Fish and Pet Stores. They want a quick sale. And will even suggest some of the smallest containers for Betta's. If you want a Pet, give it the best home you can.

Some pet stores even tell you they dont need heaters :(. At petsmart i word vomited "yes they do, theyre tropical fish!!" when I heard an employee telling customers they were the fish to buy if they didnt want to buy a heater. He honestly looked relieved that I turned the people off and proceeded to tell me its corporate policy to do that. Petco's website says they only need 1/4 of a gallon!!! I boycotted these places even though its made shopping for my various pets a pain, its worth it because theyre corporate monsters! I love your videos guys, so bummed I couldnt/can't make any of the aquashellas this year. Hopefully next year!

I'm going to be a first time Betta owner. Just like any animal I wasn't about to impulsively buy. I've got everything down just watching the video to make sure I got everything. I'm waiting to get a Butterfly Betta unfortunately the one I wanted is gone but I am sure they'll get more. I just hope the one I wanted wasn't impulsively bought it was beautiful.

can you please help me? I saved a betta from a friend that was in an empty bowl almost dying, I did everything for him, clean conditioned water, new tank, plants, bamboo, anubias, floaters, gravel, good food, light, heater, filter..... the issue is when he was in the bowl in my friend house he developed cloudy eye (one eye only) how can I fix this? everyone is telling me that clean water will help it heal... but I want something to help him heal faster, any ideas?

My oldest betta just turned 5, so she is definitely right! If you treat them good they'll live a long life

I treat them very good but they don't live a long life. My bettas lived few months until almost 2 years. In nature a Betta live 1 or 2 years but in captivity he can live more than 3 years but it's not the average. Lisa don't speak about genetics and breeding who can short sometime the life of fishs (example Guppies who can live 5 years in 1960's).

My aunt had a betta in a 1.5 gallon bowl. He lived for NINE years, and had a great personality.

Thanks for the excellent info as always! I never knew bettas were so intelligent and interactive until I got Martok a year ago. I love my little wet buddy and have spent at least 10 times his purchase price in live plants and a 10 gallon upgrade. Not to mention all of his fancy little shrimp roommates! I am lucky, he has been a very good tank mate for my shrimpies and watching them scurry around seems to provide some enrichment for him. He is target trained and gets hand fed, no wasted food. He enjoys gentle pats and head boops as well. I doubt if I will ever dare to have another betta in that tank when Martok is gone, I don’t want all my shrimpies to get slaughtered 😱

Hi! I'm a seasoned fish keeper from Malaysia and I love Bettas. I have 5 low tech planted community tanks and all of them hold a Betta. However, in the last 2 years since I have started keeping Bettas I have lost my 8 Bettas all to Dropsy disease to a point now it's too depressing to keep a Betta anymore. All my other community fishes such as Tetras and Corys are all fine. What is your view on Dropsy and how to deal with it as the online research I've done doesn't give a cure as it is a genetic related disease...
