This was a great one!! Please do a series of famous herpetologists or individuals within the reptile community who paid the ultimate sacrifice while doing what they loved. I think it would be a great way to honor them to share their stories and upbringing and then discussing what happened. I don’t think it should revolve around their passing but highlighting what they have done for the community, and recognizing their accomplishments then touching on what happened. Just want to keep it respectful as possible for their friends and families who may see the video.

Two off the top of my head are Robert Mertens (twig snake) and Grace Olive Wiley (Indian cobra.) There are quite a few others. It seems to be a rather prevalent occupational hazard for herpetologists. Other people had some pretty hairy close calls, too.

I don't need someone to take out their 18' cobra, aggravate it and then show off his big angry cobra on youtube in order for me personally to learn about cobras. Even if they don't intend it, it just further influences the already highly impressionable tide pod generation to buy cobras.

One of my favorite memories is when I was a kid and came upon a baby sidewinder in East San Diego County CA. It was coiled up next to the road and it was midday. I sat down near (but not too near) that beautiful snake and we watched each other for about thirty minutes. I moved first, got up waved goodbye to that sweet baby. Not once during that interaction was I tempted to touch it. I was not that stupid. That was 60 years ago and sidewinders are still one of my fav venomous snakes on the planet. I have never owned and will ever own a medically significant venomous snake.

I find it odd that chandler refused to be in this video. It clearly isn’t for emotional reasons because he’s done videos and an hr long podcast about it so it seems like he just wants to make sure all the views go to his channel. Seriously tho part of me thinks chandler will be killed filming a KZbin video. The way he handles venomous snakes is so dangerous even from a non experienced eye. Constantly holding them in ways they could easily turn and bite and having to dodge strikes.

@@cannsmith I have so little respect for that man and have to fight my disgust when I see him in other reptile youtubers vids. the gentleman at NERD hit the nail on the head when he talked about why he stopped free handling venomous reptiles. if you want to make a clown of yourself privately, fine, but the reptile community already faces trouble from ppl wanting to place unnecessary restrictions from ignorant ppl that if ur in the public sphere u have to be extra responsible to not make reptiles look like bad or evil animals. "is it venomous" is still the #1 question I get about my corn snake. when the majority of the population thinks every snake is venomous by default and is therefore a risky pet, u CAN NOT make reptile owners look bad. assholes with an agenda will exploits ppls ignorance to put restrictions on perfectly harmless snakes like a rosy boa bc of dangerous actions taken with a cobra.

I get that accidents happen but regardless of how much experience someone has, proper tools should always be used when the public is involved, whether in person or online. Responsible keepers don't free handle deadly animals and those that do are a danger to the hobby. Lawmakers are just looking for any excuse to ban exotic animal keeping and all it takes is one wrong move by someone looking for views to ruin it for everyone. Kevin McCurley, the Godfather of reptile keeping, stopped free handling because he knows it's more important to keep the hobby safe and legal than to showboat.

You just mentioned him as someone you felt handled hots resoonsibly before and i wonder if your opinion has changed whether regarding his own animals or wild animals. I *do* think that a series on people who have been bitten in the field would be enlightening--whether those you know or historically. So many people know about "herping" from watching YT but perhaps not the risks. Or maybe you'd consider a field herping guide for beginners?

His name isn't Biteforce for nothing. He has had a couple venomous bites as well as gator bites with one being worse than Wills in my opinion. It may take some arrangements to pin him down as he's busy right now but, I think you two could work it out.

I keep highly venomous scorpions (some of the world's venomous). i think free handling venomous animals is not smart. I did get stung by one of my baby Deathstalker scorpions. How i got stung was the baby had attempted to climb out of his baby box during feeding, and I instinctively put my hand down to block its escape. I didn't even think about it tbh. The initial sting wasn't bad, but the pain ramped up, and within 45 minutes, the venom was in full effect. 48 hrs of unpleasant pain, and that was a baby! I take far more precautions than previous. Animals can hurt us rather easily, so we should be cautious when working with them, even if we have worked with them for years.

A video about Steve Irwin would be awesome, even if he didn't die due to reptiles, would be interesting

i have no shame in stating facts. i watch most of these guys who mess with very dangerous animals to watch them get bit. honestly there is only so many times i can watch a guy tell me how dangerous a king cobra is without it becoming redundant. these guys keep people watching by walking that fine line until something inevitably happens. this brings in revenue and is why they tempt fate....it pays the bills.

Pharr i think was dealing with a wife or ex wife that was going to take his kid from him as it had dangerous snake's and that incident. I didnt know till later that he lived about 3-4miles from me here in NW Houston
