I was looking at turn of the century photos the other day- and I literally saw an article of clothing that I had in my cart at Urban Outfitters! I believe it was Parisian- they had on leather harnesses over their garments- just these extravagant “belts” and interesting layering pieces that I use on the regular (I work at a boutique, and we are encouraged to wear lots of layers to show off the clothes, style, and highlight pieces; particularly store sold merchandise etc.); I just love the functionality of so many of these pieces- and it’s just all so intriguing how certain styles and silhouettes just keep coming back into style over and over!

Oh my gosh! I'll take one of each! I'm a homesteader, with an on farm bakery, so I'm very physically active. I almost always wear skirts and dresses! It's so much more comfortable!! Breezy in hot weather, ease of movement, and covers the tops of my chore boots so I don't get debris down them. In winter, I wear the same things, but with an ankle length fleece underskirt. SO much warmer than one layer of trousers! Thanks for all your wonderful content!!❤

​@@raerohan4241 I play tennis with a long dress, it's not uncomfortable I guess unless you play professionally, but it also depends on how poofy the dress is and the fabric I guess. I think the heels can be a problem though, but maybe not if they're used to it.

I love watching Murdoch Mysteries. Detective from about 1897-1915 or so. Love the show! It gives a lot of different social settings so you see alot of outfits. Along with some of the things that they dealt with around that time frame. I do love that time fashion wise.

I’m an opera singer- so I’ve always been quite attracted to this era of history and fashion- I’m currently living not too far from where famed operetta/ stage icon; Miss Lillian Russell resided when she married a wealthy tycoon after her prior relationship soured, and they moved to Pittsburgh and Lillian got into Politics. I always think of her and her Tiffany and Co. Mother of Pearl Bicycle, that shifted modern femininity as we know it!!

Thanks for this! I used to be an educator for a park district near Boston. One of the parks was a busy urban beach. Most people obviously don’t go to the beach for education so I tricked ‘em and I tricked ‘em good. I simply wore my bathing costume near the bathhouse and everyone wanted to know what I was doing and take picture with me. Whip out some old pictures and away we went back to a time when you could rent your bathing suit for a nickel! A fascinating period in our history for sure!

I know what you're saying, but 1) they just weren't used to seeing that then, and it looked extremely strange in that culture in a way I don't think we can fully grasp now, and 2) even though I believe women (including myself) can wear pants if they want to, they're often too revealing these days, and they don't make the wearer look fit or proportionate, even though she could achieve those effects in a roomier cut of pants or a suitable skirt.

When I first learned of old-fashioned bathing suits or costumes several years back, I laughed at the idea, because it was so different from anything I'd ever seen or thought about. But the more I've thought about it, the more I'd like to have one! Why should I be obligated to show more of myself in a "conservative" one-piece modern swimsuit than I ever do in my regular clothes, just so I can go swimming? The bathing costume or dress is more modest, comfortable, and protective from the sun. I'm all for it! I think I'd leave off the stockings, though, but those, like scuba-diving suits, are convenient and also helpful in protecting the legs from scratches and such.

You really shouldn't switch. That swimsuit is very unsafe, weighted skirt aside, all of the extra wet fabric would weight you down and would make it really easy for you to drown. That's why modern swimsuit are form-fitting, revealing and whatnot is because they are designed to limit excess fabric, making them safer. If the sun is the problem, I would suggest investing in sunscreen instead.

@@dDoodle788 Thanks, and I understand what you mean about the dangers of lots of wet fabric. But my kind of bathing would be simply dipping in the shallows, never going far out or doing any serious swimming. If I had to do any major swimming, then I understand why a more streamlined suit might be necessary. But in that case, I wouldn't really be wearing it in the public view, like on the beach for leisure swimming and sunbathing, but to accomplish some sort of necessary job or goal. I really appreciate the cautions, though, and how objectively you phrased them.
