Hello miss shades of Orange. Firstly I am new to your channel but not new to SF being a fan for almost 50years. I like your style of hardly taking a breath (impressive) as you outline the various plotlines and why you have chosen these books. Great video and i will definitely take a peek at more of your work. Personally I enjoy harder material being nurtured by Arthur C Clarke but love Science Fiction and read anything that is good. 6 Wakes and Obscura look interesting from this list. I added a lot to my TBR thank you! I discovered booktube a few months ago and I'm loving your channel! For recommandations with female authors I'm thinking of The Rift by Nina Allan or The Race by the same author, and more mystery than thriller but i'm also thinking about The Psychology of Time Travel by Kate Mascarenhas. Also The Light Brigade by Kameron Hurley might count as well? All great books regardless :)

Late to the party. I LOVED Dark Matter. I couldn't put it down! Same for Jurassic Park, I actually love most Michael Crichton books But how I found Dark Matter was fun. For christmas a friend and I buy eachother a book and a box of tea. Dark Matter was one of these books. I had no idea it was so popular

I recommend "Where the forest meets the stars". I just finished it, and it was wonderful. And it's written by a female too. Glendy Vanderah. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Thank you for the recommendations. If you liked Dark Matter by Blake Crouch you're sure to like his book Recursion. It is harder to find female Science Fiction/Horror authors. There is always the Hunger Games series by Suzanne Collins. Probably not considered great literature, but I have read many of the futuristic detective In Death series of books by Nora Roberts (J.D. Robb). Metropolis was written by Fritz Lang's wife Thea von Harbou. In researching female Science Fiction authors I found a couple of books/series I definitely want to read - Down Below Station by C.J. Cherryh and the Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold. Of course in Horror there is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. As a Lovecraft fan I want to read Citadel of Fear by Gertrude Barrows Bennett (Francis Stevens) and I've started dipping into works by Caitlín R. Kiernan.

This is exactly the list I needed!! Pleeeease do a part 2!! 🖤 What do you think about “speculative thrillers”? Would that be under the Sci-Fi Thriller umbrella? I only heard of that genre term when The Need came out, and I was like… that’s the perfect genre for me!! It might be too niche for a whole lot of things to be marketed in those exact words, though.

Junkyard Cats by Faith Hunter. I originally got this book because it was a free Audible choice. Based on the description, I knew it would have a science fiction dystopian flavor, and it might have cats in junkyards… I found it to be a really enjoyable, suspenseful, fast moving book with a strong female character. I think of it as a thrilling, dystopian, science fiction ‘space’ opera, which takes place on earth, in the near future. Highly recommended as a fun, fast read with lots of interesting, fantastical science.

Megan O'Keefe's Velocity Weapon (and the next two in the series) were enjoyable. I liked the first book the most as there was a mystery and an AI featuring prominently. The next two books are good, but have more politics. S.K. Dunstall (sister duo) and their Stars Uncharted series were an entertaining read. Some fun action scenes, a slowly unfolding mystery, and a crew of unorthodox characters (a trope, but was well done). The novella, Sisters of the Vast Black by Lina Rather, was good. I've mentioned it before. I read it because I wanted to see how badly it would go wrong based on the theme of the book. I was really surprised at how well the author handled the conflicts between what is right, and what they've been taught to believe is right. She has a sequel coming out in 2022 (yay!). Not a thriller or big mystery, but a slow thoughtful read that works really well in novella form (and they have a living spaceship too). Medusa Uploaded (Emily Devenport) another one I thought was good. Before Mars by Emma Newman. Intriguing mystery at the start. You've reviewed it before and IIRC, you liked it. Ann Leckie is another good author although the books require a reader to pay attention or they'll miss things.

Dead Space by Kali Wallace is a good sci-fi thriller. Four, maybe five stars. I just finished it. Murder mystery, AI, mining colony on asteroids, a conspiracy; an enjoyable read.

Great selection of books! Look forward to Round 2. I'll go through my list of books I've read to find some female authors, so I'll be back to mention those. For now... ...I've had The Fold on my tbr since May. I'll bump it to the top to read. I liked the mystery of Six Wakes. Kept me reading. Highly recommend as well. Just picked up Obscura (I have Hart's The Final Girls, but still on tbr). Here and Now and Then has been on my tbr since July 2019. Looks like another one I'll need to bump up.

I was lucky to read the book before the movie came out and I was blown away. It's still among my very favorite novels. I also really enjoyed Congo but thought that the movie version was not so great.

Science fiction thrillers are a weak spot for me. The only one I’ve read here was The Institute. Out of all these I think that I want to read Mur Lafferty’s the most. I used to listen to her podcast, I Should Be Writing, all the time.
