Is rexpose the new slow shutter king or does even longer hold onto top spot?
@DuaneForrester3 жыл бұрын
Watched the video, bought the app. Spendy, but really, still cheap in the grand scheme of things. Used it on a recent desert trip. Mixed results. Works fine at “shorter” long exposure times (call that 20 - 30 seconds). Then again, my iPhone 12 Pro Max does well natively, but with less granular control. Then tried a 30 minute star rotation shot, centered on Polaris (northern hemisphere). It shot the stars… it the entire shot was red. Literally just shades of red. Tried 3 times over 2 nights. Same result. BUT, I’m going with user error here. Basically, it comes with a learning curve and no app will let you skip it. We had a campfire burning…behind our vehicles…opposite to where the camera was. My guess…still enough ambient, localized lighting to tint my shots. No app solves for the basics of light pollution. Otherwise, this app made it easy to grab several great shots, so I’m still glad I have it and found your video. Thank you! 👍

In the iPhone, if you go to Settings, Camera, there will be a setting called “Scene detection” if you turn it off, i think it kinda deactivates the computational photography filters/editings.

Can’t save RAW in iPhone 11
@schretter13 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate for reintroducing the Even Longer app. While I have been playing around with it since I saw it on David's site. I am a bit confused about the RAW vs normal (JPG) modes. In most normal iPhone 12 Pro Max usage (except for your astro shooting) the iPhone is usually set to shoot using its HDR and Deep Fusion capability. I would assume that Even Longer collects its snapshots using this to optimize the exposure. If it is really shooting in RAW versus the really big ProRAW files, this is no longer possible and doesn't this create the possibility of exposure issues as the light changes such as your example? So why should I be paying more for shooting RAW with this app.
@ShayneMostyn3 жыл бұрын
Thats a ripper question mate. To be honest, I turn off HDR and scene detection off on my phone. I turn it on occasionally for some videos, but otherwise, its off. Not sure its doing it to optimise the exposure, I think its doing it to capture the movement. You have given me something to test here though.
@schretter13 жыл бұрын
@@ShayneMostyn Shayne. I think that one of the best features of smartphones is the computational photography when it makes sense. I am not sure what scene detection does so I do shut it off. Yes you can see that with hand held in low light the straight RAW shot may have slightly better resolution than the computational PRORAW but in ok light or using a tripod it is really hard to see any resolution differences and you do get improved noise performance. I will go with your opinion for astronomy but not sure I agree for the long exposure on the tripod for earthly shots.😎
@ShayneMostyn3 жыл бұрын
@@schretter1 Its certainly somethign I will test mate. Its 100% ok to have a different opinion, you have convinced me to look at it further. Im hopefully headed to some waterfalls in the coming weeks and I will do some testing there too. I will post results on the FB group when I do.

@ShayneMostyn3 жыл бұрын
Not that way, at least not yet. It will save it every "x" amount of time through the long exposure, but not individual frames for that.
@stevenneaves80793 жыл бұрын
So I assume it’s stacking and averaging here since there’s no ND filter in front of the iPhone 😆
@mariotomiak3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's averaging hundreds to thousands of individual frames. A filter on the iPhone would not do the trick as the shutter speed is limited to 1 second. A bit more with "night mode", but not in the minutes range.
