HMS Venerable (R63) was a Colossus-class aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy. She served for only the last few months of World War II, and in 1948 she was sold to the Netherlands and renamed HNLMS Karel Doorman, taking part in the military clash in 1962 in Western New Guinea. Subsequently, she was sold to Argentina and renamed ARA Veinticinco de Mayo, later taking part in the Falklands War.

As a boy from Birkenhead I’m always fascinated and proud reading about the range and numbers of ships Cammell Lairds gave to the world and its history, from the CSA Alabama to HMS Ark Royal it’s crazy to remember our shooting Air Bomb fireworks into the empty dry docks ( Noise was epic!} and it being the last place I worked back in 1988 before leaving the then desolate town. I can report that it currently has at least three Royal Navy crafts in her docks so I hope this once employer of 24k people is regaining some of its former glory. Thanks again for your great work here James.

Her 1981 refit didn't include any major work on her catapult. Trials with the new Super Etendards showed it was fairly worn out and new components were ordered from the manufacturer, McTaggart Scott Engineering in Scotland. The parts were due for delivery in spring 82... but were embargoed and never delivered. As a result the carrier couldn't launch fully laden Skyhawks in less than strong winds. The ship was effectively paid off in 1986, becoming a 'harbour queen' until the late 90s, when even the cost of a care and maintenance party became too much.

Ahhhhh our former beautiful flagship, thank you GB, she was an absolute beauty. My grandfather worked on her refit in the 50s since he worked at Wilton-Fijenoord, he told me the story he once got shown the blueprints for her old 40mm Bofors and the blueprint took up so much space they had to move in a second table. I also once saw that picture in a museum of her sailing close to the USS Enterprise and she looks like a fishing boat compared to that American beast, but still i'm proud we had her in our fleet and i'm proud my grandfather worked on her. More than the Harriet's, what if she was completely reffited in 1981, so that she could launch the Super Étendard equipped with the Exocet. That would certainly sure have changed the war completely.

The Corsairs were modified for British service primarily by squaring off their wingtips, so that they'd fit in lower hangar decks of British carriers, as unlike most British naval aircraft which folded their wings aft the Corsairs folded them upwards. The Illustrious class had 16ft hangars, Indomitable had a 14ft upper and 16ft lower and the Implacables had both at 14ft. The Colossus class by contrast were built with the new standard height of 17ft 6inches (incidentally the same minimum height of motorway bridges in the UK...). Corsairs could not be operated by the Indomitable or the Implacables, which embarked Seafires and Hellcats instead.

The Light carriers were relay quite nice ships. To my knowledge they are the most widely operated capital ships ever, much to the chagrin of the Americans who couldn't find anyone to buy their much more capable surplus Essexes to as everyone who was in the market already had one.

That and the Essex class would have been ever so slightly more expensive to operate. If I remember right Australia looked at one as a possible replacement for Melbourne and quickly decided to look at the I class instead... Unfortunately for the RAN FAA Argentina got ideas and the UK kept all three, shame really as I'd liked to have seen a Sea-Kangeroo FRS.1

Another excellent video, though one question. Was HMS Venerable originally also designed to operate F6F Hellcats? I ask because the picture shown when discussing HMS Venerable's air wing is of a Royal Navy Hellcat, and I know the Royal Navy did operate Hellcats. Things I particularly appreciated: 1. The disclaimers about pronunciation of Spanish and Dutch. 2. The blooper reel.

TheShipYard Thanks for your response! And I appreciate your sticking with trying to nail the pronunciations of foreign names AND apologising for any errors made. Your dedication to continual improvement of your videos is one reason I keep coming back for more. Well, that and I find your presentation style edifying and entertaining, with just the proper leaven of humor added.

You clearly put a huge effort in researching these videos. However you really need to get on top of your pronunciation. Don't worry too much about obscure names. Say them as you see them. Break longer words down. It's also English words you need to be careful of.too like Hawker Siddley and the letter "H". That said, you're doing a cracking job and I'm really learning stuff from your videos. All the best.

i put a lot into it. sacrificing 2 days a week where i could be spending quality time with my GF to make the videos for the week. ive always have a slight problem with pronunciation, speed and recently developing a noticeable stutter. i have been trying to improve that, but sometimes, maybe a bit more, that rears its head

TheShipYard I’ve been in broadcasting since 1995. It can be tough especially bad for me during the Yugoslavia wars. The bloody names! Like I say just take your time with the hard words. Break them down unto chunks or write them down in your script phonetically. For example: Venty Sinco De May-O Cow Loon Trinca Ma Lee Also if you’ve got a tough to say word, consider re-writing the script so you don’t have to keep saying it. Please don’t take this as negative criticism. It’s anything but. Just a bit of advice from someone whose spoken for a living for years. Your vids are so informative. Keep ‘em coming shipmate!

you know what, ill try that. try and avoid them like the plague. or covid, both works hahahaha. but thank you for the advice. might work by the time we get to next Thursdays video. Mondays might be a bit dodgy with words, so ill give u the heads up now.

I'm still a little confused about what purpose the Netherlands (of all countries) would have for a combat ship like an aircraft carrier. Aren't they known for having an aversion to anything involving warfare?

I don't know if you offend native Spanish speakers with your pronunciation, but as a native English speaker I am offended. The letter H is pronounced "aitch" in English.

Yes, your pronunciation of the Dutch names are like a nails scratching over a chalkboard. Tip: Van Speijk will probably pop up a few more times if you decide to take on the Dutch Navy: by royal degree there will always be a Van Speijk in the Dutch Royal Navy in service.

Dude if you are going to go off on these tangents, then you need to do your research. You seem to not know a lot of extra stuff you mention. Throwing political views such as "regain the Empire" don't work and aren't funny. Hong Kong was a significant trading post and Naval base and the UK needed it back. Kowloon is pronounced "Cow-Loon" and is part of Hong Kong. Again, research your subject properly. She was renamed HMNLS. HMNLS what. Oh. Karel Doorman. Quote unquote Angled flight deck? Seriously?? A massive technical upgrade... do you know what that even is?
