I was stationed on the USS Franklin D Rosevelt from 1972 to 1976. During that time, we made two Med cruses. The Allen M Sumner DD692 was one of our escort ships. I remember refueling with her alongside the Pawcatuck (AO 108) fleet oiler at the same time. I remember as we refueled how steady the Rosevelt traveled through the water while the Sumner bounced up and down while riding the waves. That big 692 hull number sticks in my mind as if it were yesterday. I also got to ride the Pawcatuck for 2 days in the Med while being transported back to the Rosevelt. Lots of good memories.

All 4 ships are a pile of 💩 The MOD wanted 4 tankers and they got 4 Tankers. They are a shambles. Cheap and not even cheerful.. 😮 they look great but are badly built. Vibrating funnels means cabins are condemned due to noise pollution.😮😮

They weren't "the last ships fitted with steam propulsion". Hms Ariadne, the last Leander class frigate was commissioned in 1973, 7 years after Intrepid was commissioned. Also, nuclear submarines continue to be built with steam propulsion.

As an AB ( R ), on Arethusa 79 - 82 i worked with the PO ( Gunner ) in the ops room on the Seacat system, and i can honestly say it was shit. Should have been an ASW weapon. Complete embarrassment.

It will simply never happen and this project is just a fantasy. Russia itself knows that it is unable to produce a destroyer, so it simply concentrates on building smaller ships, which translates into building many corvettes.

As tragic as her loss and the loss of life was I fear had Hood survived the war she would have only suffered the same fate as Warspite and the other BB's of the fleet in one of the scrap yards.

Only ever saw it something once. Most of the time it would dive straight into the water with the wings flying back onto the ship. Or it would go ballistic forcing us to turn hard to avoid it falling. One just sat on the launcher burning setting the launcher on fire. Everyone knew it was crap more faith going to the 20mm. The only time I saw it work it was in manual manual mode in the hands of a skilled gunner who hit a slow moving "sitting duck" towed target.

There was an acknowledged failure of RN's anti aircraft capability that only came to light during the Falklands war. Doctrine had been directed towards guided missiles as the (almost) sole defence against aircraft. Gun armament was not seen as the future. Seacat was envisaged as the replacement for the Bofors 40mm gun, with the only type of small calibre deck mounted guns planned to remain being the token Oerlikon 20mm. The RN's line of sight Seacat, near useless Seaslug, as well as the more advanced Seadart and Seawolf missiles were all in use during the Falklands war, as were their Oerlikon guns and the RAF' Regiment's Rapier missiles, but attacking Argentine aircraft still managed to penetrate the task force's defences. The relative failure of anti aircraft capability has been ascribed to two basic issues; The first was that the Navy's missile systems had all been developed to engage only one perceived threat - that of Warsaw Pact aircraft on the open seas. Defending ships anchored close in to rugged hilly coastlines (as found in the Falklands) was not a scenario ever thought likely. All RN's missile systems struggled with the situation, with some being lauched "unguided". The second was the lack of a layered defence systems integrating both missiles and guns. Almost all defence eggs were in one basket - namely missiles. The absence of enough closer range automatic gun armament was painfully evident. These days such lessons have been learned , with much improved missile capabilty and close in (gun) weapon systems such as the potent Goalkeeper and Phalanx guns being part of layered missile/gun ship defences, which still includes last ditch 20mm and 30mm automatic weapons. Let's hope we never have to put such defences to the test again. RIP all those lost in the Falklands conflict, and we must always remember those both killed and injured.
