So 2 carriers catapults and, 18 fighting frigates & destroyers. 4 dying ballistic boats 2 incredibly old T boats and, 4 modern attack boats. I still don't understand why a middling European country needs 2 carriers, perhaps dreams of empire still circle in Admirals' fantasies. The old excuse used to be to "keeping the seaways poen for trade" which today is just a joke.

I was in H.M.S.Phoebe (F42) in 71 - 73. My first draught as an FC2 , action station in the MRS 3 TS. We filmed the first two series of “Warship”. She was an excellent ship, one of the best sea keeping ships I was ever in.

Recently saw on YT that HMS Ambuscade, transferred to the Pakistan Navy is being returned to the UK for preservation, supposably the last survivor of the `Conflict` - I had heard that HMS Bristol was still about, any others (maybe still in service abroad)? Atlantic Conveyor was as much a Merchant Aircraft Carrier as the `Mac` ships of WWII. Chilled rendition of a Tragic event, wish I still had my scrapbooks from the time. PS my `Old Man` was a Bootneck, tho` retired by then, having served with the Commandos participating in the campaign.

Instead of building a massive target third aircraft carrier. Make another 2 invincible class aircraft carrier. Make a other 2 commando carrier to complement the smaller aircraft carrier and the 2 larger aircraft carrier

My brother served on HMS Amazon as a CPO(R) from 1988 to 1991. Whilst he admitted they looked nice, he didn't rate them highly as a warship, saying they were basically only good for chasing drug dealers in the Caribbean, for flying the flag around the globe and holding parties for dignitaries. He also stated that the lack of a long-range radar wasn't really a problem, as only being armed with Sea Cat missiles, there was not much they could do even if they spotted an enemy aircraft coming into attack.

there is a huge difference in the cost of ships of a given tonnage between warships and merchants. there is not much information on the split between the basic ship and the weapons systems.

We left out the fates of the RAN Type 12s. From memory: Yarra broke her back while being drydocked and was mothballed and scrapped during the 1980s, Stuart was decommissioned with Parramatta about 1991; both were towed for scrapping at Singapore, Derwent decommissioned in 1995 was used for experiments about firefighting and damage control before being sunk as an artificial reef. Swan was decommissioned about 1996 and sunk as a recreational dive wreck neat Cape D'Entrecasteaux in Western Australia. Finally, Torrens (my favourite girl) was decommissioned in 1998 and sunk as a submarine torpedo target off Perth in WA. The Mk48 torpedo exploded right under where my cabin had been, breaking the old girl's back. There ya go.

Yes these are beautiful ships that l will love until l die. And they were certainly pretty. l served as an officer in the RAN in three of them - HMA Ships Swan, Derwent and Torrens (twice). They were fast, agile, sea-kindly and reliable. ln heavy weather they would often be detached to go ahead of US designed ships in a task group because of their terrific sea sea-keeping abilities. As a young officer l also won one or two hearts at cocktail parties onboard these ships!! This video has made me all nostalgic now,

Very bad to decom these Ships early. We still have Aircraft Carriers and tgey need an anti air defense in their battle group no matter what. I get things get old but this is more cost savings vs meeting national congressional requirements for our country. Further more its far less difficult to decom then it is to plan, design, build new ships. The navy is taking the easy way out.

I wish we had bought this magnificent ship with the Harrier system . The Oz navy has been in dire need of a fixed wing strike capability since the Melbourne was decommissioned. With Kim Beazly flogging it's A4 air wing to the Kiwis for bargain basement price . Wanker!

Hi mate, like your work, have watched most of your briefs. A couple of corrections for you, first the Leanders were type 12L (not I) with the L standing for Leander, and secondly the Leanders superseded the Rothesay class type 12M, M for modified. I have a reasonable knowledge of the type 12s having been Marine Engineer Officer in HMAS SWAN (1 of 2 Australian built modified Leanders) and was decommissioning Marine Engineer Officer of the world's last operational Rothesay Type 12, HMAS DERWENT. I stayed with DERWENT after she decommissioned as Damage Control Officer proudly in charge of a team of sailors who did a fantastic job of firefighting and leak stopping over the course of a three month series of real time fire and explosion trials conducted by the Australian defence scientific organisation. A search of the web for HMAS DERWENT will net some pics of the big bangs we had to deal with. Cheers

The original hull design was the Whitby class (type12). This was followed by the Rothesay class (type 12M) M= modified. Finally the the Leander class (type 12I) I= improved.

I recently saw these give some ships a nasty surprise in the new game Sea Power. The American fleet was closing on the Soviet fleet that had expended its anti ship missiles. Except they still had these strange things.
