During the Western Army's attack on Fushimi castle; where Torii Mototada was the deputy. The Shimazu expressed their willingness to join the Eastern Army and asked Torii to let them help defend the castle, but wasn't granted. The Shimazu then had no other choice but to join the Western Army. This account, along with their refusal to move upon Mitsunari's order during the Battle of Sekigahara, perhaps, convinced Ieyasu to spare the Clan of major punishment.
@TheShogunate3 жыл бұрын
@@itsrye8001 This is a very interesting and popular story (it could also very well be true), yet it seems many historians over the past several decades claim it is probably false, and that Yoshihiro sided with Mitsunari from the start.

Fun fact: The current Emperor is actually the Great-great-grandson of the penultimate Daimyō of the Satsuma Domain, Shimazu Tadayoshi. @@timokohler6631 lol Gaijin If you don't know, sit down. Even ordinary families place importance on preserving the names of their ancestors. Some even adopt boys from other families to preserve their name. That's why, not long ago, giving birth to a boy was considered important. This applies not only to noble family but also to ordinary farmers and merchant families. Even today in Japan, family lineage and family names are important. I was lucky to have a chance to visit the Shimazu estate and gardens of Sengan-en right before the start of the pandemic. It was really interesting to learn about their history and the fact that they had one of the largest libraries of foreign books in the country for most of the Edo period and played politics with a lot of Europeans. It was clear that they used their sort of salutatory neglect from the Tokugawa shoguante as a way to really build their own power and independence. I was hoping for a mention of the Anglo-Satsuma war and how it later led to all mikans imported into the UK to be referred to as 'satsumas'. What really stood out for me though, was the fact that it was someone's job to inspect the poop of the head of the household everyday (though it was likely a more common practice, just that they made sure to let tourists know that fact). How they treated the Ryukyuans . . . not really mentioned all that much for obvious reasons and their control of the sugar that they produced for them.

At this point in time- I think the world can go as far as to consider the Shimazu clan/family as the "Guardians of Japan". Throughout the history and entirety of their existence- They've fought so hard for their family's survival and yet later in history leave a mark on the country that would influence the country on maintaining traditional identity but also a sense of proud national pride and patriotism even as Feudalism ended.
