I've always used only high brass base hulls for buckshot loading, because most of the factory buckshot ammo I've seen are high brass base.. I know your the real deal because I saw a Lee perfect powder thrower on your bench. That is a set it and forget it powder measure. I used to check every 10th charge but with that one it's a waste of time, it doesn't change and likes all of the powders I use. Thanks for the informative post!

I had a few once fired Fiocchi clear hulls with deformed crimp sections that were not really suitable to fold crimp again, so I trimmed them down to 2.5". I loaded them similar to what you did with the first round you loaded: Cheddite primer, 18grs of Promo(Red Dot), green SSW with petals removed, .125" 12GA nitro card, 9 pellets of Hornady .330" 00-buck stacked by three, and a BPI .045" 12GA overshot card. It lined up just right for a roll crimp. 18grs is probably a little light, but it is what I normally use in my 1-1/8oz. clay loads, but I think it will do for some low-recoil "tactical" style buck loads.

That situation was over about a year ago, nearly everything is back in stock. Hardest thing to find is blue dot and steel powders but those are the only two that aren’t always available currently. The problem right now is everything being about 20% more expensive than it was before 2020. It’ll go down though. Prices aren’t terrible so I’d say yeah get into if you can, still saving a ton of money loading buckshot, slugs, and any gauge besides 12 and 20.

Thank you for the video and your time! You make it easy to understand and follow. I'm curious if it's worth it to reload ourselves compared to buying from the manufacturers? How much was the total cost for that one shell? If I made my own ammo, approximately how much per shell for 12ga 2¾ 00 @ 1400fps and slug @ 1600fps? Thanks again!
@theshotgunscientists
@theshotgunscientists 9 ай бұрын
It all just depends on how many pellets you want but for buckshot and birdshot the faster you push the velocity the more it spreads. Loading your own buckshot and slugs is a lot cheaper than buying factory ammo especially if you cast your own lead.

Mike: Question rather than comment. I've been loading for over 60 years but haven't done shotshells for decades and a lot of things have changed. I'll be loading for a KS12TS for defense. The components I have, and would like to use without acquiring others, are Alliant Blue Dot, Remington 2 3/4" unibody hulls (they're labeled SureFire), Winchester AA wads. An odd combo, I know, but this is what I have. I'll use #1 buck. What would be a reasonable charge of Blue Dot for a stout but not hazardous defense load? Also are the AA wads usable with this combo? If you decline an answer, I'll understand completely but I thought it worth a shot. Thanks a bunch!!
@theshotgunscientists
@theshotgunscientists 9 ай бұрын
Those hulls are tapered and any load data for tapered hulls may be used, but not sure of the exact wad you have. Winchester made a bunch of AA wads for varying payload weights. Actually not an odd combo at all. I’d go to alliants website for blue dot powder and find a load using a Remington gun club or sts hull with the wad you have and load by the payload weight. 10 pellets of #1 buckshot is right at 1 ounce, 12 is in between 1 1/8 and 1 1/4 ounces so 1 1/4 ounce data should be used. 15 pellets is 1 3/8 ounces.

Random question. If a person were to take a 1-1/4 ounce max dram load and reload it with 1 ounce of shot would I maybe see a decent boost in velocity over a 1 ounce skeet load? I ask this because I'm making wax slugs and for whatever reason the 1.25 ounce loads are tumbling immediately in flight giving something like a 2 foot group at 25 yards while the skeet loads are making a single ragged hole. I already tried it and found it to be accurate but with identical recoil leading me to believe it's not really any faster. I'm tempted to work up my own loads with some blue dot but most of my interest here lies in off the shelf SHTF aspect of it. You know, just for S&G.

Hey brother, I appreciate the videos. What do you think about this shotshell but with 28 grains of Longshot, a thin Mylar wrap and some BSB buffer? Is it pointless to use both a Mylar wrap AND buffer? If you just use a Mylar wrap, should you reduce your powder like you would buffer?
@theshotgunscientists
@theshotgunscientists 11 ай бұрын
The Mylar wrap weighs nothing and doesn’t effect pressure, in this load it’s meant to protect the hull from being torn up by the buffer and pellets.

So how can you tell the tapered hole in the straight hole from the outside
@theshotgunscientists
@theshotgunscientists 10 ай бұрын
Hull not hole, but Winchester tapered hulls will have a tall basewad inside the hull that’s clearly visible, tapered hulls are usually smooth like no texture on the plastic. Remington gun club and game load hulls are the exception.

ok bro ive done a few and after you pre crimp it then you do the final crimp down do you squash it all the way down to where the top part comes down and contacts the bottom little metal piece that holds the hull,i wanna make sure im not over tightening it because it leaves a place on the side of mine where you can feel it with your finger,it goes in a bit on the side where the wad has the hole going thru it.kinda dips in a bit.did i over crimp it ?
@theshotgunscientists
@theshotgunscientists 6 ай бұрын
You’re starting to buckle the hull, just put enough crimp on it to where it won’t open back up. Get a gaep bn2 crimp finisher and it’ll make factory looking crimps. Just need a hand drill.

Question for the expert: I am beginning to make my own rounds, and was wondering how you would personally go about making this. I personally like its low FPS of 1150, but it is kind of expensive. Any suggestions on wad/part combos? Any answers are greatly appreciated! Winchester S12PDX1 Defender 12 Gauge 2.75" Slug Buckshot combo (438 grains) The 12-gauge Defender ammunition features a distinctive black hull, black oxide high-base head and 3 pellets of Grex buffered plated buckshot nested on top of a 1 oz rifled slug. The result is the ideal, tight patterning personal defense load. The slug/buckshot combination provides optimum performance at short and long ranges while compensating for aim error.

Bpi 1 ounce value slugs, 3 pellets of 00 buck. You’ll need the green short shell wad from bpi, tear off the petals, use a 12 gauge overshot card on top the wad, the slug, buckshot and fold crimp. Powder charge would be 26 grains of longshot. It’s a 1 3/8 ounce load.

Lilgun can push 1.5oz to 2+ ounces in 12 gauge just fine... It gets a bad wrap, but it's pretty dang universal in 12 gauge. I've tested Lil'Gun in 12 gauge with 1.5oz with 48 grains (won't say the wad) and got 1425 FPS and 11k PSI. Like you said, its some crazy stuff. I love it.

@theshotgunscientists
@theshotgunscientists 7 ай бұрын
There isn’t one. .410 powders are way too slow burning for anything larger than 28 gauge unless you want really heavy loads. In 20 gauge it’s good for loads 1 1/8 ounce to 1.5 ounces, in 16 gauge 1 3/8 to 1 3/4 ounces, 12 gauge 2 to 2.75 ounces and 10 gauge 2 3/8 to 3 ounces. For .410 get lil gun for anything else use longshot.

It’s data right from the bottle, but it’s for a tapered hull. Using a straight wall hull the pressure would be even less. It’s about 10,500 psi from what I’m seeing on hodgdons website. 34 grains is only 9,300 psi.

Buy a lee load with a thing of powder a 500 bag of wads and circle wads and primers with say a small bag of 00,bird,slugs to start off and save money in the long run because a box of 25rd slugs are running about 25$ a box when right there is a supply of say wads so in reality 6months of if I but 100$ or even 50$ of shells a month i would of already invested 300$ to 600$ when that amount can get you how much rounds if you just order the components with 300$/600$ worth of goodies
