If you think about it, Judas might just be jealous. In the song 'Heaven on their minds' he complains about Jesus buying too much into the story of being a messiah, but in this song he's criticizing Mary for using expensive oils to care for Jesus; ironically forgetting how human Jesus is, and how exhausted he must be addressing all his followers who clamor to him.

no, not really. If you think of this in secular terms; the original goal was liberation for jews from roman domination. Therefore feeding the needy was a more pressing matter; for humanitarian reasons, along with garnering support for their movement. Wasting resources on an individuals comfort would be no better than a Caesars comforts.

I love how Jesus Christ Superstar depicts Jesus as a real human being who really suffers trying to bring the truth to a place and time ruled by oppression fear and godlessness, not so much different from our own

JCS definitely catered to the "fully human" aspect of Jesus. This has always been my favorite theatrical portrayal of Jesus. Many people criticized JCS because they thought it was disrespectful (even blasphemous) to Jesus Christ, and would weaken the faith of believers. But my faith has always been renewed when I see or hear songs from the musical.

It was not a particularly Godless time. Many Gods were available. Many of the Roman Legionnaires were Mithraic initiates. There were messianic figures in abundance among the Jewish people at the time. Basically there were more Gods and Faithful around then than have been for a thousand years.

I’ve seen JCS for the first time in 1978 I think. I was 20 years old and attended to the movie version by Norman Jewison. I was stunned like everyone here. This is the best song of the opera because it joias the three main characters and the thrilling emotions it brings is outstanding. Mel C is TOPS!!!

I have just played the 1970 recording side 1 & 2 . Will play 3 & 4 tomorrow. I our suburb in South Africa Alberton we play music each evening . Our neighbour plays live piano for 30 minutes each evening. In my sons suburb all the emergency staff have driven through the streets with sirens , lights flashing people out to cheer and clap . This to show support. Here people are taking lock down seriously. God Bless South Africa & The World.

Ben is one of the more angry Jesus-actors, yes, but I think he still has that nice, soft, a bit vulnerable quality to his voice. Especially in that song. He's mad at Judas and it shows, both in his gestures and his voice, but he still has an almost pleading "please understand me!"- tone to it. Despite of his frustration. I like that.

Webber's version plays into the smear campaign of Mary Magdalene that's been around since the Middle Ages. The idea that she was a reformed prostitute came about thanks to an Easter sermon by Pope Gregory the Great. Nowhere in the Bible does it say she was a prostitute. If anything, it indicates that she and other female disciples were rather well-off, as they "provided for Jesus out of their own resources". As to what exactly the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene was, that's left up to speculation (for now, at least), but personally, I think they were more than just teacher and disciple.

The sensual relationship between Jesus and Mary in this version is disturbing, probably because the version of Jesus I was taught in church was an asexual Jesus. In this performance, Mary doesn't simply have an unrequited crush on the charismatic son of God. Here, her attraction appears echoed in his response to her.Jesus responds physically to her ministrations and her touch and he walks off the stage with his arm around her.
