I love how there are layers of meaning in this song: It is first the song from the opera about the fall of Carthago - the soon-to-be fallen queen singing. For Raul it's a song from his childhood friend - asking him to remeber her. And it's also the Phantom's song for Christine - asking her to think of him fondly when she's far away and free. The only one this song doesn't speak for is Christine herself, hence the remark from Meg: "The words aren't yours"
@lordyeetus88433 жыл бұрын
Fascinating analysis. Your point about the words not being Christine's also alludes to her lack of agency at this point - so many decisions are made for her by Erik, Raoul, the Managers, Madame Giry and Carlotta even. It isn't until later in the musical that she truly makes her own choices, and isn't overawed by the Phantom.
@alexgray7272 жыл бұрын
@@lordyeetus8843 Correct me if I’m wrong but I do believe Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again is the only song that doesn’t call back to a previous song or allude to a future. It’s also the only song where Christine doesn’t have a duet or lyrics written for her (not sure if that’s an appropriate way to describe it but I hope you understand what I’m trying to say)

Weirdly the character Christine’s playing is supposed to be Dido/Elissa, the mythological first queen of Carthage, who loved and was abandoned by Aeneas and lived centuries before Hannibal did. Is she supposed to be singing about Aeneas here? If so she’s taking it a lot better than she did in the Aeneid.

I now realise why Sierra is my favourite Christine. She has this special, sweet quality to her voice that captures Christine’s innocence, youth, vulnerability and inexperience, while still being powerful and impactful. A lot of talented stars have played Christine, with most singing the score as a legit, seasoned soprano. Which is still beautiful, but it doesn’t fit the character as well.
@seansilence26972 жыл бұрын
This and also Sierra's portrayal has better acting that most. A lot of Christine's are pretty one-note for me. Just constantly sorta wide-eyed and empty headed. I feel like Sierra gives her more depth.
@EmilyL-hy7pp Жыл бұрын
I totally agree - I think Sierra being a coloratura soprano helps in this role a lot. They tend to be very agile singers and can do those difficult runs and high notes and all the crazy singing stunts while still sounding light and "younger". Which I agree, fits the character of Christine perfectly. And Sierra is just absolutely the best Christine ever, in my opinion.

Raoul is the patron of the opera house, so if he were on the cast, assuming Andre and Firmin know nothing of the Viscount's character, he might not accept director's criticism and use his influence to get his way, and that might ruin the quality of the play.

Sierra has this charming innocence about her that makes her Christine so endearing. ♡ Every time I watch her in Phantom (or LND), it always seems as though she had been born to play the role. She does not act for the sake of living up to what people wanted to see, but to breathe life into the character itself. She becomes one with it as she adds her own personal twist without straying away from its core. When she is onstage, she is a completely different person. Add the fact that her brilliant portrayal is exactly how I picture Christine in the novel, regardless of however she was described there. Also, Sierra has one of the most incredible soprano voices I have ever heard-truly effortless and emotive. It is amazing how when she sings, she does not only tell the tale that surrounds the song, but she lets you experience it as well. Sierra is the definitive Christine in MY book.

It is almost impossible to find the language to express, as a reminder, that Sir Lloyd Webber's "Phantom..." will (if it hasn't already) be defined as one of the great operatic achievements in the 20th Century...and since the dawn of the 19th Century of true romantic opera. Many, many years ago when the musical first debuted I was always: "Oh, just Sir L-W, taking advantage of what was... and copying it." Have realized over some decades that what he had done is to give honor and recognition to that history and I am more than happy to say this. There is never a moment in much of the score of "Phantom..." that one's heart is not torn apart.
