Not that he's too good/not good enough, It's just not his thing, but because he was in the 25th anniversary everyone assumes he's super knowledgable and into the history and community around Phantom, and he's just like "... nah man. Why I really love this musical is how the Phantom is clearly the antagonist of the show, but it's written in such a way that you really sympathize with him and you wish he had a happy ending too. And Ramin sells the character so well that every time he sings about Christine, your heart breaks.

What's interesting, if one wanted to dive into the mental state of these characters (and I am no Psychologist or even sociologist), but it seems to Ramin Karimloo that The Phantom seems to have a good amount of signs of having autism (or to a higher functioning form of it), and Christine also seems to have BPD.

@@gos9030 fam...he just...loves her so much???? Literally all he wants is for her to be happy and alive. Genuinely tragic that most of his Final Lair lines are hidden underneath the Erik/Christine harmonized argument because he's being legit strangled while saying lines like "for pity's sake, Christine say no! Don't throw your life away for my sake!" and "Why make her lie to you to save me?!” and "Christine, forgive me! Please forgive me! I did it all for you and all for nothing!” Do you realize that he was asking her to let him die so she could be free? He was literally willing to be tortured/killed by an obsessive stalker so that Christine could be free and happy. It's the only REAL personal desire he shows in the whole musical: Christine alive, healthy, and happy. And like...his Big Duet with Christine backs this up!!! The only things he asks of her in the entire song is to love him ("love me, that's all I ask of you") and let him allow her to feel safe and free ("let me be your shelter"/"let me be your freedom"). This whole song is like....*chef's kiss* honestly. He's basically just a genuinely sweet, thoughtful, loyal, protective man who would go to the ends of the earth for Christine and was willing to die so she wouldn't be trapped with Erik for the rest of her life. Also he makes her laugh and understands her deep grief over losing her father (because he knew Mr. Daae as well). That man? My god...*I* want to marry that man. Meanwhile like....imagine genuinely wanting Christine to end up with the man who groomed her, stalked her, harrassed and manipulated her, kidnapped her on two separate occasions, killed two of her coworkers, was going to force her to marry him against her will, tried to kill her fiancé while guilt-tripping her into thinking it would be her own fault (“buy his freedom with your love! Refuse me and you send your lover to his death!”), tried to kill her (with the chandelier), and generally made her life a living hell for at least a year. Lol. Hard pass. tl;dr: In "All I Ask of You," Christine tells Raoul that "all [she wants] is freedom/a world with no more night," implicitly rejecting Mr. "Music of the Night" and the terror he brings. Raoul, because he loves her, swears to give that to Christine as best as he is able and then spends the rest of the musical proving it, including being willing to sacrifice his own life so she can have both her freedom and a life without being trapped by the "night" (Erik)...unlike Erik, who terrorizes her and repeatedly tries to isolate her, manipulate her, and trap her in the darkness at the cost of both her physical and mental health (which of course she reveals to Raoul in "Twisted Every Way", because by that point she's very reasonably terrified of Erik and the long-term consequences of staying in a place where he has access to her).

@brianaustin54674 жыл бұрын
@Anjelica Snorcket I suspect that the rationale for posting this clip is quite cynical and nothing to do with being 'bullied'. Although recent shows are quite worthy they are more limited in their appeal, and activity on this site has quietened in the last few weeks. In order to satisfy the demands of Google and KZbin's algorithms, and end up at the top of the pile, they need 'hits'. This also increases ad revenue: hence stirring up the pot with another POTO clip. ALW needs the publicity to aid his campaign, and he has long standing links with Universal (At one time they owned 30% of Really Useful)). I would be interested to learn what sort of return he gets from the promotion of shows filmed in his LW group theatres, such as 42nd Street. It looks very incestuous.

The two grand romantic songs in the musical are Music of the Night and All I Ask of You and I think it says a lot about the relationships that only one of them is a duet. While Music of the Night is the Phantom basically telling Christine to abandon everything she knows and cares about for him, All I Ask of You is a duet with Raoul asking Christine for permission to be by her side.

The Phantom abused Christine for a decade ( SINCE SHE WAS A CHILD ) and only sees her as a mouthpiece for his ' music '. Its fatal obsession and he never sees ber as a human Raoul loves and adores Christine so much to the point he is willing to risk his life for her several times, cared immensely for her happiness and wellbeing ( even in Notes 2, where he is torn between the plan and Christine and ultimately rushes to a frantic Christine ) is a passionate, impulsive yet genuine and sweet fellow. And of course Christine loves Raoul unconditionally and never loved the Phantom. She loathes The kiss on the lips ( or the forehead in the book ) was a kiss and final attempt to beg the Phantom to let her and Raoul go. She was so terrified and so in despair that she will do whatever it takes to save Raoul and herself.
@madeleine55612 жыл бұрын
@@chummanki9711 I happen to think she did love the Phantom. Just not the way he wanted. He was there for her when she was lonely and a great comfort. He is the reason her voice is so beautiful (or at least trained to prima donna level) and they shared a connection through music. I think her crying at the end was showing that she mourns the loss of that connection. But she never saw him the way he saw her and the kiss is from desperation. I also think the Phantom did love christine but given how he spent his life being treated that love swiftly turned to obsession and his actions were wrong. But I don't think it's fair to say it was only obsession because if that were the case I don't believe he would have let her go in the end. Phantom is the opitimy of if you love something you have to be ae to let it go. Also I don't like idea though of her throwing away her musical talent and career to marry into the aristocracy. Even if Raoul is a fairly decent guy who may love her. It would be a gilded cage. And I always got the sense she chose him more because he was the safer option.

@ugly dog Very good observations. I saw Phantom twice, once back in 2013 and she was a brand new stage actor that had gotten the lead out of nowhere, and she was very cute and charming, but played it very close to how Sierra does. The second time I saw them with my parents, the Phantom was played by Ben Crawford (who is a bit more of a poppy voice, but it worked for what he had to do), now, Christine, she was played by a 25-year-old, fresh-out-of-college vocal student who had 1 professional job prior to getting the lead role of Christine Daae. She was fabulous, but she brought a real youthfulness to the character. However, I definitely like this cast the most. I didn't think about things that deeply like that.

I love how you pointed out that Christine confesses her feelings first! This whole time Raoul has been so happy to see his childhood friend again, but he also has strong feelings for her that grow even stronger throughout the story. He has always been protective of Christine, but in this scene he just starts the song by trying to comfort her, because even though he doesn't believe in the phantom, he believes in Christine and wants her to know that no matter what she's going through, he will always be there for her. Then, the song shifts into a deeper love song as Christine suddenly reveals her feelings. She not only sees him as her dear friend, but as someone she loves and wants to spend the rest of her life with. He is her light, and all she wants is to be with him always. His expressions from 1:01-1:16 show that this was more than he had hoped for, that the dream he had treasured is suddenly a possible reality, because she feels the same way that he does when he's with her.

Christine has got to be one of the most demanding roles in any musical; the range you need is INSANE O.o
@angelettejones88822 жыл бұрын
Actually Carlotta's role is way more demanding. For her role you have to have actual Opera training, while for Christine's you don't. The hardest part of Christine's role is the Eb she does at the end of "The Phantom Of the Opera", which most sopranos can do with training, and learning to use whistle register. However, Carlotta had to sing some serious notes, especially during the Don Juan rehearsal.

So I personally think the relationship between Christine and the Phantom is deeply unhealthy (and incredibly one-sided), but I love the line where the Phantom sings "He (Raoul) was bound to love you, when he heard you sing" because the implication is that he fell in "love" with Christine when he himself heard her thing and I just think that's just an incredibly interesting and poignant detail. (Thank you for coming to my TED talk.)

I always thought of that line as the Phantom blaming himself for Christine and Raoul reconciling. He taught Christine to sing, arranged for her to perform in the gala, which just so happened to be when raoul shows up again. Without the phantom’s guidance, Christine doesn’t have any success and languishes in the chorus as the shy naive girl we meet at the beginning, and raoul probably doesn’t even notice her.

@@athenavictoria9731 i always find it weird how in this performance you have that interpretation of the ending, but then in 'point of no return' christine doesn't even realise she's singing with the phantom until the very end of the song. it feels like the end is really alluding to christine having a romantic attachment to the phantom, but then ponr completely denies it. i love the 25th to bits but i've just always found that inconsistency bizarre?

Even if Christine does love the Phantom, it's definitely not healthy. He started their 'relationship' by pretending to be her Angel of Music. But it's okay guys cos he loves her and he's damaged????

@@cgm530 Sorry this is coming a year later, but anyway, in this version of PonR, the Phantom is singing with an Italian accent to pretend to be Piange except for certain emotional high points when he loses control. Christine isn't singing to the Phantom; she's playing the part in the Phantom's play while thinking it's the other lead actor. It's not until the Phantom breaks character and then she feels his mask under the costume that she realizes the truth and tries to bolt. She was absolutely terrified of the Phantom despite loving him for being her inspiration and foundation of music. In the final confrontation down in the Phantom's lair, she goes through a lot of emotions. Fear, hate, pity, hope, and then sadness in the acceptance of letting him go and knowing he let her go.

Much better than the movie...In this performance, it is clear that Raoul and Christine are in love with eachother for the sake of being in love. In the movie, it seems as though Christine is only around Raoul for protection. This musical captures how Raoul's protection of Christine against the Phantom transcends the psychotic situation of the Phantom kidnapping Christine and instead, we can see Raoul use this situation as a way to prove to Christine that he'll be there for her both in her current situation but also in years beyond. Really well done!

I can sympathize with him in this so well, the pain in his voice, while also having the rage and feelings of betrayal and vengeance. I just rewatched this version after a couple years, and the phantom's reprise made me cry for like 10 minutes. The sheer heartbreak feels so incredibly real, especially the part where he has to just LISTEN to Christine and Raoul share a beautiful, special moment in the distance. The worst part is that they really are the best possible match, and their love truly is wonderful and special. It's Christine's light in the dark. There is no injustice in this scenario. It's the good ending, and the Phantom, the antagonist, is left all alone. He knows that he is a defeated villain out of reach of the love he needs so badly. He has to WATCH that love he's never gotten to experience, and still can't. It's beyond tragic. No wonder it destroys him to the point where he snaps.
